Things that should be allowed and why

Well, there should be the option to turn Snap to Grid on/off, the ability to turn the Grid on/off, ability to Upload your own Images/tokens/etc.; with all of this it would allow the ability to resize the map to what you want and not have to worry about the pressure of trying to fit it and the tokens to the grid.
You can turn off the grid in the page settings , you can upload your own images by dragging them onto the table, and you can resize any object independent of the grid by holding ALT while resizing. Hold SHIFT to maintain the aspect ratio. All of that information, as well as answers to many more questions that you may have, are available in the Roll20 Help pages.
Dustin Reindl, As Balladeer is saying, currently you can turn the Grid on/off and upload your own images and tokens. To be able to turn Snap to Grid on/off has been requested here. But right now you can avoid the automatical Snap to Grid if you hold the ALT while moving or resizing a token/image.
