Interest Check - 'Not' Veterans 5ed game.

There must be folks out there that want to play, but don't know where to start. People that have lives that don't allow them the luxury of digesting tomes of full of game rules, or wrestling with the mechanics of Roll20 itself (hey, not everyone understands things like this immediately - and for those folks it can be stressful and scary). This game would not be a watered-down effort - it would be fully immersive in the books 'eventually', so don't think of it like that. The requirements would be to: a:) Want to. b:) have a quiet area/time that you could speak over the internet in order to play. That means no TV in the background, no radios, no screaming, and any other annoying sounds that would create an unpleasant audio experience for those on the other end of the connection. The sessions would be short. 2 to 4 hours, and would occur either in the evenings EST, or early Saturday or potentially Sunday. You would need to do nothing to prepare for the first session - just show up. The first session will be to discuss the environment, decide what class you'd like to play and create the basics of that character. There will be no pre-submission of characters. At all. One reason for this is that there is a nifty part of character creation that allows characters to create bonds and essentially a history with other players. One of the items that will make this a great game for newcomers is that character creation will not be handled per the Players Hand Book. (Although they did a fantastic job at it - the only reason it will be different is that the setting doesn't agree with many of the steps in terms of possessions). We'd roll ability scores in front of the whole group (sorry, but that is so awesome. Point Buy is justifiable, but it's so much more entertaining to create something randomly. Some of my favorite memories of games involve players who have ended up with less than average characters that have embraced their inadequacies and thrived despite them). After that you basically get a simple weapon, and 1... Yes I said 1, item. Yes. I am that cruel. (If you've never needed to fight off an evil beast with a shovel before, then you've missed part of playing D&D - If you want to be a superhero, then there are other games.) Of course, possessions and power would be synonymous with survival. Thus, you would grow to, and beyond, what a 1st level character would normally receive. Speaking of survival. You will be tasked to create a backup character on your own time. It would be part of the game, in the journal, so you could get to it and populate the character sheet (though ability rolls would still be conducted in front of the group - because like I said, I am cruel). The reason you would want a second character is because death is likely in your future. There are a lot of ways to die, and as previously stated, I am cruel. I prefer good aligned players, or at least one's with good tendencies. I get to be evil, because... I am cruel. Thus, the first , and potentially second sessions may involve getting ready to play. Thus, alleviating the need for new folks to know everything about everything in order to become involved. If you've gotten this far and are an individual that fits the above, then let me finish by saying this. If you've never played, then that is not necessarily a bad thing. The game is meant to be a story, and though rules are very much necessary - story > rules. I am getting to be an old fuddy-duddy too, so if you are older, then have no fear! I also suggest you equip a notebook and good old fashioned pencil to record, NPC names, places, events... I make all my local players do that, and I award them when their recorded history is relied upon to embellish the ongoing story we build. Thank you for reading... Peace... and Looking forward to your thoughts.

Will do Kath! I work until 7pm EST through the week so that does seem like it might be hard. That being said, weekend afternoons I find are really nice to play on too. Leaves the night free for running around.
I would love to join I think it's a great idea. I am fairly new to roll 20 and RP and due to work I find it hard to get a game, this would help me no end. My names Dai from South Wales (UK) GMT and Saturday would be great I have a headset Skype if that helps.
I would really like to get back into D&D. Been trying to find a game, but I don't feel comfortable enough to play a "veteran" game. I played pathfinder for about 5 months last year and it was really fun until DM and another player had issues and the whole party had to disband. If this qualifies me to join I would really like that! If there are newer players however I will definitely step aside so we can bring in more people to our community
Was this a weekly or bi weekly game?

Truthfully, it would be 2 to 3 times a month mostly, with 4 times in a month not being unheard of, and possibly 1, say if it was vacation season and folks were out exploring the world and stuff. So 2/3rds and a Half weekly? Hahahah... I think the non-stop commitment of every week, no breaks at all, can wear on a person. I am incredibly busy in real life, and I expect that may be the same for other folks too. Real Life > Game, but at the same time folks need to be able to make it most of the time and be vocal about it when they cannot. I expect that out of my local games, and I'd expect that courtesy from and to everyone here too.
I would be interested in joining but my schedule prevents me from playing weekly. I could commit to every other week though.
Ok, Joe. Let's see how this pans out after being up for a few days then we'll try and see what the common schedule looks like. Thanks!

I'd be interested! I'm not completely new to D&D - I've made a few characters and have played in a handful of sessions - but I know I'm missing a lot of information, and I'd like to learn the system more thoroughly.
Pretty sure this works for me perfectly. I just posted this a little while ago. I'm PRETTY sure I fit your requirements. Read that and lemme know.
Hello, I am new to P&P RPGs in general but know some basics how they work. I just bought the Player's Handbook and have read the first 20 pages or something like that. So for me this would be ideal. I am GMT+1 though so the early Sat/Sunday timeframe would be best for me.
Hey, this sounds like something I'd be interested in. I've GM'd one and a half adventure and that's about the experience I have apart from watching the DnD podcasts with Chris Perkins and I would love to actually play as a character this time. I am located in Sweden so my timezone would be GMT+1. Got a good mic and all that! Toss me a pm if anything comes out of this!
This sounds like it would be good for me, only thing is I sometimes wouldn't be able to do evenings. Weekends are usually free. I have played around three sessions of fifth and less of the other editions. I do have experience with tabletop rpgs but these things have not been long term for me in the past. When it comes to making a character I am not an optimiser, I first come up with the idea of a character and adjust and pick feats to fit that.
I came across this thread by accident. and as Keenan's previous DM I want to say that he's a very funny and engaging player. He played a fun an unoptimized character, so as a fellow DM, I'd advise you to pick him. Plus, his acting as a drunken irishman was freakishly accurate! ;)
No experience with D&D as of yet, bout 5/6 months of shadowrun experience under my belt only, but would like to learn how to play, especially in what seems like a chill, negotiable funny session. Saturday's from like 8 o clock GMT onwards would be good and anytime up until like 10 gmt sunday would be good really, especially morning. I'll definitely make that first session though. I tend not to optimize, unless i'm getting anally annihilated every sesh, at which point I will try my best to minmax without losing the charisma and comedic styles of my characters, and will still be RP well if I do. Got an unarmed attack to 23p in 4E, which is essentially double the punch power of an anti-materiel rifle, and have used throwing weapons from forks, boomerangs, frying pans, and soon in SR 5E, a laded weighted sombrero. I'll play whatever character you need me as if there's a hole in the party, and will even scheme behind player's backs or become a villain instead of a player if that's what you need. Chad
I believe we've filled the roster. If I haven't contact you (and please don't feel badly, I usually stick to a small party size), then thank you for the show of interest. Should we lose folks, which happens I will revisit this thread and try to re-contact people that I couldn't fit in. Thank you guys!
