New to Tabletop games

Hey. Like my title says I'm completely new to tabletop games. I've never played one but have been wanting to try for a while now. I've done some reading on the forum here and know that depending on the game you will need the players handbook for character creation. And, I'm trying to see if anyone would be willing to help me by showing me the ropes.
have you played 4th edition before? i have a level 5 oneshot starting in 30min you can join. will go for 5-6 hours
i run a post apocalypse game that doesn't require a handbook for players, if you're interested in the genre.

Just posted this an another similar thread but for your benefit: Being new, green or otherwise inexperienced is not a barrier to entry. Spend time reading up on the rules, familiarise yourselves with your chosen system and their usual settings and above all else apply to play games in an honest and mature manner. Most GM's will be happy to take new players as long as you are prepared to put some time into learning during downtime, have rudimentary imaginations for role play and won't ruin a campaign by being a child (i don't mean chronologically but in terms of attitude). Don't be afraid to ask questions, the only stupid question is an unasked one. Most of all though, have fun, that is what it is all about... and if your character dies well then just possess a new one (role players are essentially brain leeches of the fictional population lol).

I just popped over to the search engine and did a generic search for your needs with what details you supplied . I used the welcomes new players, no mature content (my choice on that one), and roleplaying filters. Everything else was left default. I had it sorted by starting soonish. Good luck and happy gaming.
Thank you for the advice Ziechael and thank you Pat S. for the search. I just recently joined roll20 and looked at games that had more experienced players which kind of intimidated me at first. But I'm going to apply to some games and sees what happens. Hopefully I can join one and get my feet wet.
I suppose I'll put a little tidbit for you to consider as well. One thing you should keep in mind though when you're looking for a game to potentially be in is to consider what it is you want to do. Are you a player, or a character? A player is typically just someone who views it as something to be beaten and won. The mechanics of the game is what's important and trying to have the character that deals the most damage or destroys the most stuff is what wins the game. A character is someone who wants to get into the story. They understand that they may be defeated or even killed, but they don't focus on trying to have the biggest hit as much as they do the plot. When you go to post an application, be sure to state what it is that you want out of the game you're looking for, but also make sure the game seems like something you want to be in. If you're a player trying to get into a plot heavy game, well odds are high that the person running it is going to pass you up. If you're a character who finds himself into a game to find that you're the only one who cares about the plot, but everyone else just wants to kill the monsters, sell the loot, well then you're probably not going to enjoy it unless the other people you're playing with are entertaining enough that you'll be fine playing with them. I hope that helps!
