Hello, I'm Grapha! I've been a DM for another campaign for a bit less than a year. I have also been a player in a campaign for about a month. I am a bit new but know the rules very well. I always strive to make sure I know what I'm doing as much as possible. But enough about me, on to the campaign. Everyone starts in the main city on the island where everyone will be starting in. What you do, where you go and the direction the campaign goes is entirely up to the players. It's your story, I'm just telling it. As far as character creation goes, I am open to pretty much anything from any of the official material. If you can't find anything you like than I have no problem with homebrew classes. Just link me to what you're interested in and I'll give it a look. I think unusual races and classes just bring something else to the campaign not take away from it. That being said there's definitely nothing wrong with sticking to core if you're new, unfamiliar with non-core, just don't want to bother or prefer the base classes. If any of this peaked your interest, don't hesitate to drop a post with any questions, concerns or if you're interested in joining. Post your skype and we can talk about character creation and any other questions you may have!
