Hi, I'm looking to join a Serenity RPG or possibly Weis' Firefly RPG. I love the series but not quite familiar with either system or the story elements to run a game as GM. I took some materials, rules, character creation guidelines that we could build into our game from another person's game. Dawn Forge, Firefly Class Ship
Game Description
There's things in the dark of the ground
what's best left there, despite which the mind of a man always seems to
be conjuring ways to drag it into the light if the payoff is big enough.
Them that do may not have the seemliest of reputations, so far as
civilized folk are concerned, and might find themselves staring down the
wrong end of the law. If that's the case, could be they find themselves
planted right back there in the ground again on a more permanent basis.
Guess there's a lot of sins hidden up there i the dark and that's
likely why the law is there to keep everything where it belongs. Trouble
is that the gleam from that shiny badge sometimes blinds one to the
blackest of hearts - 'specially in places where no one wants to see the
light.
CORTEX CLASSIFIED
Want your own boat but found nothing decent within your price range? This may be your lucky day!
Red Moon Corporation offers deal of a lifetime to an experienced Captain and full crew to run fully functional, recently renovated Firefly class ship, The Dawn Forge ,
currently berthed at the Eavesdown Docks, Persephone. The crew will be
required to take on a maximum of six jobs a year passed on by the Red
Moon Corporation's liason, and in return they may make quarterly
payments towards buying out ownership of the boat.
Experienced applications only may apply to Mister Fergus Mosely .
Was it a suspiciously good deal? Of course. Were you going to find
anything better? Unlikely. Fergus Mosely is a well known name as least,
referred to behind his back as Ferret the man was sly, weasely. You'd have to be to set up a rival organization to Badger
in his very own turf and not only survive, but thrive. Was this
opportunity too good to turn down? Now that is a question a body might
have to think long and hard about, or perhaps not at all. The Dawn Forge seeks
experienced and talented pilot to join an interesting crew of
individuals for cavorting around the Verse looking for business
ventures.
I currently have no gender or Alliance/Independence preference just know
that I do like an involved, cohesive party and greatly appreciate people
who post well and often.
Character Creation Guidelines
Please build at Greenhorn level with the rules from Big Damn
Heroes which mean you spend Attribute points ONLY on Attributes and get no free points to get you started with Traits (no you cannot take
Disadvantages especially to get more points in your Attributes I'm
afraid).
My one hard and fast rule regarding character types is that I will not, under any circumstances, accept Readers as player characters.
I love to build plot around character backstory so a well written piece
of prose (or history segments/vignettes) filled with potential hooks is
going to make you rather attractive in my eyes! I also like characters
to have portraits - although I'd rather you did not use pictures of
established actors or characters from well known TV and films, I find
this breaks immersion for me.
Do bear in mind that I will be most likely to keep combat short, to the
point and relatively rare as I consider it to slow up game play in play
by post to a painful level. Therefore, please do try to avoid making
your character a tank and only a tank because then you may well get
bored. Also bear in mind that I believe 'tall, dark and mysteriously
silent' does not equate to not having to post. I like to see a lot of
expression in posts describing actions as well as words.
One very important thing to note : Crew cohesion is very important to
me. So when considering your concepts please be sure not to make any
Lone Wolf style characters, or anyone with a serious social problem who
does not have a 'failsafe' in place for keeping him or her with the
crew. To this extent please also bear in mind that this game is set only
a few years after the end of the War, this means that while the crew
might run to strong allegiance in one way or the other - a crew that is
split down the middle between the Alliance and the Browncoats is not
going to function well.
I will be setting up a few varied location threads for some
pre-selection RP if you guys would like to jump in on that. I find it
can be a brilliant way to develop characters, gain ideas for potential
links between characters and just have a lot of fun. Not only that it
helps to give me a good idea of your writing style and post rate. Please
do be aware that your participation in these threads is not at all
mandatory and if you do not post in them it won't discount your
character, or give him or her a lesser chance at a slot. It's just a bit
of fun.
Please make yourself a new (not private) thread in the Character
Applications folder, anything you'd like kept private can be placed in
private tags but the main information regarding name, picture, position
applied for etc must be viewable to all. This way everybody knows what
has been applied and what has not.
On your application I would like to see the following :
Name
Age
Portrait
Position applied for
Alliance or Independents?
Background
Contacts and Important Persons
After that I would love to see a short piece about you as a player; who
are you, how long have you played play by post, favourite systems, likes
and dislikes, silly random things. This will help shape my impressions
of you!
House Rules
A dear friend of mine sent me these to see if I'd be interested in
them and I rather liked what I saw. So here are the House Rules for your
perusal.
The maximum rating for starting Attributes or skill
specialties is set at D12. If you must be the absolute best in the
Verse at something then message me, with a great concept this rule can
be bent. In addition to the listed bonus for Lightning Reflexes
(pg.44), any time you spend plot points to increase your initiative or
to overcome surprise, you count as spending 2 more than you actually
did. Moneyed Individual (pg.45) has a new chart. Replace the credit column with the following values: 1,000/2,500/4,000/5,500/7,000. The bonus to Life Points provided by Tough as Nails is doubled to 4 and 8 respectively. Starting Cash : Perhaps an unpopular House Rule but I'm sure
we've all noticed the ridiculous amount of starting cash one begins
with. So instead of all that, your Veteran characters will now start
with 250 Credits to spend (adjusted if you take Moneyed Individual or
Dead Broke) and you can note down gear related to your character's
Profession for free. Within reason please! I will be checking the
inventories carefully.
And, perhaps the most important House Rule to note :-
Advancement in this system is pretty terrible! I really hate the way
that it encourages players to hoard Plot Points, and ensured that the
fun ones who actually spend their Plot Points rarely get to advance so..
Instead of that I will be separating out Plot Points from Advancement
Points.
Plot Points will reset to base values between each plot arc so there is
absolutely no reason at all to hoard them! And I will deal out
Advancement Points as I see fit in return for various things including;
great ideas, brilliant dialogue between PCs, playing on a Complication,
actions which work towards crew cohesion.
Do bear in mind that I value story above stats, so a well crafted
character history with multiple plot hook opportunities that allows for a
good glimpse of the character's story and their personality will
certainly not hurt your application!
I am going to open up a pre-game RP thread within the Application folder
despite having only a very short advertising period. Please do feel
free to jump in here and have a play around with your character. This
will give me a good impression of your post rate, writing style and how
well you play with others so it will definitely be a positive to have
managed (although I will not penalize you for not having the time to
post here before deadline).
