Amber Diceless Game

March 10 (9 years ago)
Hi,

I have never played this game, although a willing GM has appeared on roll20.net and he said he would run a game if we could get together some players. Is there any interest?

The game is based upon the Chronicles of Amber.

I enjoy Amber (both the books and the game). As long as we can get a mature group together, it could be good fun. One problem is that it will likely lead to inter-party conflict and/or one-up-manship, so it would require a set of stable, experienced roleplayers that can seperate IC and OOC. Selling eachother out to the Courts of Chaos is fun only once.

I am with you. I learned 35+ years ago that inter-party back stabbing is the quickest way not to have a cohesive group. Or a group at all. My current gaming groups intentionally state that we won't screw each other over, and we focus our angst on the npc's.

Any idea as to how many people you're looking for? You indicate you have a GM available, and presumably you are a player yourself. As for me, I enjoy small groups, and even two players could be fun, as long as the NPCs are sufficiently fleshed out. I'd prefer a group of at most five players, of age 30+. [I started gaming in the 80s, so you can make a guess as to my age.]

Hi Patrick. I intend to play and I understand you want 5 or more to play, but I am up for whatever. I say we see what we can put together and then make a decision?
March 12 (9 years ago)
Actually, I wanted 5 or *less*! Big groups bog stuff down to the extend that there's no room for individual character development / interaction. But yes, let's get interested people together and see what we can do.
March 13 (9 years ago)
No worries. We can shoot for 5ish or less. 2 would be boring, 3-5 should be ok?
March 13 (9 years ago)
Sure, that sounds fine by me.

Hey there. I'm wholly unfamiliar with the Amber setting, but I've heard about the diceless system in the past and found it interesting. I rather enjoy the more narrative RPGs. My availability is limited but I'd be interested if you're okay with introducing people new to the setting.

Do yourself a massive favour - start reading the Amber books (by Roger Zelazny). There's a total of 10 (in two series of 5), but theya re pretty slender, and you'll rip through them in no time. Once you're in book 3 or so, you'll have a good feel for the setting. It's awesome - time very well spent!

Haha, is that your professional recommendation Sir Librarian? :P

*chuckles* In my professional life, I'm usually more in charge of scientific stuff, so take my opinion on Fantasy books with as much salt as you find tasty :).
I'd be interested in checking this out as well, though I'm in the same boat as TED as far as familiarity with the setting. If the game isn't scheduled to start incredibly soon, I might be able to read up on it some before-hand.

He is correct. One of the best stories ever. I think I like the second series in some ways better than the first. I am in no rush, so ya, read up. I am going to download the books to my phone (long drive daily) and listen to them in the car to brush up.

Patrick, do you do some kind of research? If so, what?
March 15 (9 years ago)
I'm an anthropologist, actually, although semi-retired for medical reasons. Being a librarian was never a strange migration for me, given how a lot of anthropology revolves around managing the writings of other people, anyway.

Excellent. I am a dentist. My wife is a biochem researcher. We love science.

My father is a dentist! He's the one who introduced me to tabletop gaming.

Sweet.
