James is right, most 2E products are out-of-print and can be obtained -- often less than sticker price except the rare ones -- on used places, Amazon, Ebay. 3 of the core rulebooks were reprinted a couple years ago and may still be sold new in some hobby shops and online (Player's Handbook, DMG, and Monster Manual... the reprints with the green diamond covers). The game can be played with just these 3 (or honestly with just the PHB). These are the only ones available "NEW" at cover price. A website called DNDclassics sells any official PDF's that are available digitally , however I don't believe they sell the core rulebooks in that format, just modules and supplements. The total product-line with all the supplements though, is voluminous. It's many years of collecting. Don't know if anyone has ever made a complete set. There are tons of settings and supporting products, alternate rulebooks, historical settings, easily more than 500 products in the line published between 1989-2000! Some other websites like Dragonsfoot Forum are especially good for threads recommending which books to get, depending on what type of campaign you might want to run. Another nice fan website is called Purple Worm. <a href="http://www.purpleworm.org/" rel="nofollow">http://www.purpleworm.org/</a> I will also PM you a link to join the 2E Tavern here on Roll20 (public LFG link). It is a group for 2nd Edition enthusiasts that I started to support playing this game system on Roll20 interface. People there share various clones (For Gold & Glory, and Myth & Magic are two known descendants of 2E), blogs, API's, and spreadsheets that help to re-compile the 2nd Edition rules. I think this will help supplement your collecting nicely.

No Piracy Allowed We will not allow the encouragement or distribution of pirated works. The actual books will get pricey, there are PDFs out there and Purple Worm has most of them on line.
I do have a complete set of the brown, blue, and green books, plus the core rules on CD-Rom, and 2.0 CD-Rom Core rules. But trying to collect every single item yes, there's just too many. Too many small print runs, too many obscure titles. Finding all the brown, etc books of the races itself took over a year, scouring book stores, and patiently watching ebay nightly. And this was when they were still relatively available. If anyone is looking to play 2nd, look at hobby shops or Ebay for the ones Gold showed the pics for that's your best route. The originals are usually covers fallen or worn off or duct taped, etc
When I was a kid I played D&D constantly and managed to amass a huge collection of the 1e books, modules and other materials. I started playing again a few years ago and moved onto 2nd edition and I have slowly built my collection of those resources as well. James J. said: […] plus the core rules on CD-Rom, and 2.0 CD-Rom Core rules. James J., maybe you will second me on this, but I think the most valuable investment I have made since starting to collect 2e was buying the Core Rules CD-ROM and Core Rules 2.0 Expansion CD-ROM. Between the two CD-ROMs they include HTML and Text files for just about every 2e book: core rulebooks, the DM and Player's Options, etc (see below for complete list). There is also a Windows application that you can run that has a lot of cool features, including the ability to roll up encounters, create and store PC's and NPC's, etc. I was using that from time to time during my first 2e campaign, but now that I have found Roll20 it is much less helpful. Anyway, I just wanted to point this out to anyone who wants to invest in 2e materials. I think I paid more than $200 for those CD's, but for that you get all of the rules in one place in multiple fully searchable formats! In case you are interested, here is the complete list of books that are available in RTF and HTML format: Arms & Equipment Guide DM Option: High-Level Campaigns Dungeon Master Guide Monstrous Manual Player's Handbook Player's Option: Skills & Powers Player's Option: Spells & Magic Player's Option: Combat & Tactics The Complete Bard's Handbook The Complete Book of Dwarves The Complete Book of Elves The Complete Book of Gnomes and Halflings The Complete Druid's Handbook The Complete Fighter's Handbook The Complete Paladin's Handbook The Complete Priest's Handbook The Complete Ranger's Handbook The Complete Thief's Handbook The Complete Wizard's Handbook Tome of Magic Hope this helps, -John
