Not Receiving Changes? Please read! (e.g. player moves token but you don't see it move)

Hey everyone, We've received some intermittent reports from folks that sometimes their players do something (move a token, change a health value, etc.) and they don't see it happen on their screen. We're trying to track down what the cause of this could be, and if it is happening to you, it would be useful to know what your error console says while it's happening (both from you and your player, if possible). Here are instructions on getting access to your log in Chrome: <a href="https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/docs/overview#access" rel="nofollow">https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/docs/overview#access</a> and Firefox: <a href="https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Web_Console?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Using_the_Web_Console" rel="nofollow">https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Web_Console?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Using_the_Web_Console</a> Basically, if it starts happening, have your player move a token, and keep an eye on your log. You should see messages appear after they move the token (along the lines of "change heard"). If not, let us know. Or if you are seeing those messages and aren't seeing the token move, let us know what the messages are as well. Thanks!
Is there anyone out there still experiencing this? If so please let us know! Thanks!
Bumping this one more time! If you're seeing anything like this please let us know...
I had this problem last night. I don't have access to the computer we used, but I'll describe a well as I can. We use Roll20 for playing around a table with a TV built in the center. We use two computers, one for the DM and one for the players. The screen receives video from the Player PC. Both computers are windows 7, asus laptops with Chrome. Playing dnd 4e The Problems: 1) On DM PC, I would have to move the player after updating health/auras/status balls(is that what they're called?) before I could see the update. This was a bit annoying, but not so bad. They would hide themselves again from time to time and I would just move the token to get it to show back up. 2) It was very confusing on what the Player PC could edit. I wanted the Player PC to be able to change the health bars and auras of the Player tokens, but I kept having to make the same changes on the DM PC to match what the Player PC had done. However, there were a few cases where the Player PC would update a token's life, and I would see it on the DM PC. 3) My DM controlled tokens were lacking all graphics. I couldn't get them to see health bars or auras or status balls that I put on my enemy tokens. We use an aura of radius 1 and color red to indicate bloodied so this is very important. 4) When I (DM PC) updated the position of an object on the map, it seemed to lag for set amount of time for different objects. For example, I used a compass display and every time I move it, it would take minutes for the location to update on the Player PC. We didn't have this problem for the player tokens. Well, maybe once or twice throughout the night for player tokens. That's all I can think of right now, and I'll be happy to post specifics and maybe try to get some screen shots later tonight if you think it will help.
I'm also able to grant players the ability to see and edit auras, but the player has no way of actually editing the auras. They do not have the button that opens up the menu with bars and auras on it. Is there a way for players to put auras on themselves?
having issues with the game crashing alot, is there something I can do to help stop this?
@Scott Thanks for the detailed report! @Jacob Can you be more specific? What do you mean by "crashing?" What are your computer specs (<a href="http://supportdetails.com" rel="nofollow">http://supportdetails.com</a>)?
I am currently setting up a game and playtesting some larger battles. Similar to what Scott W. is saying, but I am the only one online so I can only note the lag I see from what I choose. The most common thing that was happening was when I would click the marker for the red X across a token, the first one I did in a series wouldn't show up. Even if I did four or five in a row the first one wouldn't show up. Like Scott, if I moved the token or refreshed my Internet Page everything would show up fine. I also had a similar problem with the purple dot marker. Sometimes it just wouldn't show up when I clicked on it. And no matter how many times I checked it and unchecked it, it just wouldn't show up, but as soon as I moved the token it would. Unlike the previous case (with the red X) this only happened occasionally, not every time I tried it. I should also note that I am not using chrome or firefox. I am using the chrome frame over Internet Explorer. Which by the way I really like, but when I first try to open my campagin it gives me the browser incompatibility page. If I click the install chrome frame link and refresh a couple times, everything eventually fixes itself and I get in though. Once in I have had no issues as long as I don't close the internet browser.
The following is the log on chrome as I was moving tokens around to get the auras and status balls to show up. These tokens were on the GM layer, I highlighted both and hit ctrl+shift+o to put them on the object layer. The first weird thing was that changing their layer changed their position. Second, when they came back to the object layer, they were missing the status balls and aura display. Once I moved them on the object layer, their statuses reappeared. set layer to objects app.js:1 Heard change event on -I_FimcY6x9xYnbMIKkg app.js:1 Found model app.js:1 set layer to objects app.js:1 Heard change event on -I_FioD2AqFjGTXFIezF app.js:1 Found model app.js:1 activate page! app.js:3 Reorder by Z app.js:3 2show radial app.js:3 set left to 560 app.js:1 Heard change event on -I_FimcY6x9xYnbMIKkg app.js:1 Found model app.js:1 2show radial app.js:3 set left to 420 app.js:1 Heard change event on -I_FimcY6x9xYnbMIKkg app.js:1 Found model app.js:1 2show radial app.js:3 set left to 630 app.js:1 set top to 980 app.js:1 Heard change event on -I_FioD2AqFjGTXFIezF app.js:1 Found model app.js:1 show radial app.js:3 nothign selected This was the only solid bug I could reproduce after our session, but it seems like so many more things go wrong when we're playing. I can't pause the session to do debugging though :( I feel like a lot of these problems are my fault for not setting up the proper ownership of tokens or clicking the appropriate boxes for who can edit/see bars and auras.
Had something like this today. There would be a minute or two where updates would stop, skype still worked, oter web pages would load, but D20 seemed to hang. Then it would catch up and a bunch of posts would occur at once and the map would update.
Sorry, D20 wouldn't "hang," I could still post and even see my rolls come up. But I couldn't see other people's updates. There was one case where someone else's rolls and text appeared between two of my own that had previously been together.
@Dave Thanks for letting us know. That seems to be happening when Firebase gets a little backed up. We're working with them to get it fixed :-)
Is this related to a problem with adding images? When I apply a map to the page or add an avatar to a character, all I get is the small "placeholder" icon indicating a picture is supposed to go there.
Oh! I just saw this topic, didn't recognize it as a similar problem when I posted my topic. I'll repeat my post here. Okay, I'm the GM, and my player is in the same room as me on the same internet connection. We basically use the site for the game board feature for our games and just play everything else normally. Things have been working great until tonight. For some reason, when I move tokens or ding the map, she doesn't see it. When she moves her token or dings the map, I don't see it. Brand new problem started tonight and been trying to fix it for over an hour. Tried restarting and tried power cycling the modem/router. Nothing works. We both use Chrome 21.0.1180.83 m. I'm on Windows Vista 32-bit and she's on Windows 7 64-bit. This is frustrating because it's interrupting the little game time we actually get and we're unable to proceed. Please help! EDIT: She can't see me post to the chat log either, and vice versa. Nothing we do registers for the other. EDIT 2: On occasion, we can see the movement, but it doesn't register for a minute or two. We checked the internet connection and it's running at 15 MB download and 1 MB upload, more than enough. Are the game servers having trouble? EDIT 3: Well, tonight's game session was ruined after trying to fix it for two hours. This sucks. If it isn't fixed soon I may have to find some other virtual game table. :(
@Lindsey Sorry to see that you were having trouble earlier. This is mostly being caused by all of the people trying to use Roll20 right now (which is great!), but we're having a little trouble keeping up with the demand. We're hoping to have it fixed soon, and I'll be sure to let you know when it is. Sorry again for the trouble you experienced during your game.
It's the next day, and the problem is persisting. I don't know how it could be too many people on at once. I was watching someone else's game earlier between 7-11 PM Central time and there were no problems. Now it's after 12 AM Central time and the problems are back. Not exactly an active time I don't think. Middle of the night and all. This is frustrating! Any ETA on getting more powerful servers up and running perhaps?
@Lindsey Actually I didn't realize you were playing during that time. I think there is a backup script that runs then. I will take a look and see if it is causing issues. Sorry about that.
Just wondering if any progress has been made on this bug yet. If not, should I do something for our next session to capture the bug? Was the log I posted earlier helpful enough?
Just tried starting a campaign and this problem is happening. When the player joins, my avatar switches to video however I cannot see his avatar. On his end it seems fine, he can see everything, however when he moves tokens or types in chat, it doesn't register on my PC.
@Carlos that is unrelated to the original problem. Can you please start a new thread?
