mid-afternoon in what time zone? (never played battletech but it's a game about giant robots...)

Time zone is CST/CDT, I think its GMT-6 or -5

I would like to learn (never played the rp version only the minis war game) but I work till 1600 pacific (GMT -8)...

No reason you couldn't show up late. I am not the only one running this. Once my buddy gets his confidence up he will be running it mostly. At this time, I am sure he will play until no one wants to play, then call it a night. So showing up 3 hours late, I don't think anyone is going to mind. Its Battletech after all, toss another mech on the table and start playing.

Total Warfare, but we are starting with the Quickstart rules to get people the basic rules. Then if interest develops add more advanced stuff, scenarios and maybe a campaign

while interesting as i said before.. giant robots... i'd probably only be there for a short bit depending on how much sleep i want to get...
