I am looking for two players to join me and three of my friends for a Fate Core campaign. We’re very open to new players, as long as you show up to the game ready to play. Fate thrives with proactive, competent characters. It’s roleplay heavy, benefits far more from the players’ creativity than the GM’s, is really easy to learn and play with, and offers players more control over their fate than a lot of other systems. Even if you’re new to roleplaying in general, we’re happy to have you - but we are regular group, and if you’re just looking for one or two sessions, this is not the game for you. I’m hoping for at least 6 games before this story runs itself out, if not more. We use Skype for voice only, and Roll20. We play from 7 EDT for four hours, with a ten to fifteen minute break after two hours. I’m pretty good at not running over time. To be as brief as possible, the game is focused on the life of soldiers - you are legionaries who have been recruited, perhaps against your will, into the army. Think Roman legions. In fact, a lot of this game is just pulling heavily from Roman legions. You are in a small empire. It used to be a large empire. It has decided to use its legions to make itself into a large empire once again. That, plus what is in this primer , is literally the extent of the world building I have done. I have a large world map that is labelled, but not by me, and I have thought very little about what is what. I think this makes for a more fun game. Fate Core, as a system, really blurs the line between GM and player. I am playing to find out what happens, not to run a module like in some D&D games. I do not have a plan. I do not know what is over the horizon. But together, you and I are going to tell that story, and it’s going to be awesome. I also am not really into military stories for the fighting or the brutality of it. I think a military story makes for an incredibly interesting backdrop to character interactions, and trying to develop and grow a character. If you create a one-dimensional character who is all about killing, you will not have fun in my games. I like story. And story is not battles, it’s characters responding to and then thriving in or succumbing to an environment that is hostile, at times futile, is infinitely larger than they are, and is well outside their ability to control. This game will have violence in it. It may have an excessive amount of violence in it, in fact. But it’s not violence for violence’s sake. It’s for the sake of really working some characters over to see what kind of personalities we get at the other end - so again, I cannot stress enough, if you’re not the kind of person who falls in love with your character and focuses the game on that character’s growth or exploration, this isn’t the game for you. So… do you want to play this game? I think it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun. Send me a private message and tell me about yourself. How old are you? If you couldn’t meet me at a bar for drinks, this game is not for you. What is it about this game that draws you to it? Do you prefer gritty realism, or comic book awesomeness? How much action do you prefer in each session, as opposed to roleplaying character interactions? Do you have a decent mic? Get one if not. Do you have any questions for me? Send them in your message.
Big ups for Fate Core! Fellow Fate GM tip: If you don't have stories planned out, just make campaign aspects! "The Teutons are restless" and "Politics is as deadly as Swordplay" are always true; players can invoke or compel these just as if they were on their sheet.
Actually, I think that's really lazy GMing. Planning out a story is fine, but not the only way the run a game. Fate is really versatile, and works well with impromptu or as a sandbox game where the players can go where they want and do what they want. Campaign aspects like the ones you mention don't do anything to add to those kind of stories. Say you do want a game involving restless Teutons - don't spoil the excitement of it by letting everyone see it as a campaign aspect. Tell a god damn story about their restlessness. Foreshadow it. Surprise the players with it, if they're in the affected region. Restless Teutons weren't a campaign aspect 2100 years ago, they were a terrifying and foreign threat that came out of a dark unexplored forest and starting killing a lot of people, and kept hundreds of thousands of Romans and other Italians awake at night for fear of closing their eyes. That's not something you can evoke with an aspect. A Fate game where everyone is sitting around until someone invokes a campaign aspect is lazy. Reducing the main drama of the game to a short sentence is lazy. A game where players have enough free fate points to spend on restless Teutons or abstract deadly politics is lazy. Campaign aspects can suit certain kinds of stories, especially stories that are tapping into a comic book feel, or a noir feel, but this is not going to be that kind of game. Anyway, if I've given the impression that not having stories planned out means that the kind of stories we're going to get into are able to be reduced to short phrases that can be invoked, then that's the wrong impression. This game isn't going to have a story move forward because someone spent one of their resources to involve deadly politics. It's going to move forward as we are introduced to political characters, uncover political motivations, and learn just how hard these political players play the game - all through in-game character interactions and, I hope, super interesting scenery and multiple inter-connected scenes. So, thanks for your unsolicited advice. My return unsolicited fellow fate GM tip is: Don't get f*cking lazy with your story and leave it in the hands of campaign aspects. Figure out your genre, figure out which mechanics enhance that genre and which subtract from it, and use accordingly. Make an effort.
Wow. Let's uh...be polite about this and not derail the post after this. The original post didn't ask for advise, so don't give any. Let's also not fight on how a game should be run. If you are interested in a Fate game, this is the place. I would loved to, but I'm running three Fate games at the moment. Too many.
Hey, I'm having trouble navigating through profiles here on Roll20. Is there a place I can go to find out who died and made MadMichaelofMetal the Guy Who Decides How Other People Can Talk To Each Other? The GWDHOPCTTEO, for short?

Is there a place I can go to find out who died and made MadMichaelofMetal the Guy Who Decides How Other People Can Talk To Each Other? The GWDHOPCTTEO, for short? That seems really harsh! Michael is a skilled FATE GM who likes to spread his love of the game to others. He participates in the forums a lot and is very helpful whenever he speaks. In this case, he seems to be trying to get this thread back on track and get players for Tarbo. Michael just wants one more FATE game to get going because the world needs more FATE games!

Let's also not fight on how a game should be run. I don't think anything impolite was said. I'm looking for adults who want to play this game - people who can have a conversation and express their opinion. Not people who see even mild conflict with a small sense of panic and an overwhelming urge to play peacekeeper. This thread also isn't derailed, because I am expressing my GMing approach - why would that not be relevant information? No one is fighting about how a game is run. There is room in Fate for quite a bit, including campaign aspects. But campaign aspects can be a lazy approach. I'm not using them, and I don't think they have a place in every game, and I sincerely think it is bad advice to suggest someone use them. This hobby is filled with bad advice given by people who never have anyone tell them otherwise. I wish, when I had started out, that people told me more often when an idea I had was not fantastic. MadMichaelofMetal said: If you are interested in a Fate game, this is the place. No. This is not the place if you are interested in a Fate game. There are different ways to play all games, and people play some things casually while they play other things with a high degree of effort. I want the latter in my game. My group has fun putting work into a world and sharing stories, which is dampened when one member isn't bringing as much enthusiasm or attention to the game. I've tried to stress, and it should be clear to anyone by now, this game is not for everyone. It is not your friendly pick up game at the card shop. We want to find a few people who want to stick around and dig into storytelling and character building for a couple of weeks at least. MadMichaelofMetal said: I would loved to, but I'm running three Fate games at the moment. Too many. Thank you for that relevant information. Sterling Cutter said: Michael just wants one more FATE game to get going because the world needs more FATE games! And I don't need help from either of you to make that happen.

Tarbo ... you seem very confused ... Michael never said YOU were being impolite. Michael said Golden B was being impolite by interrupting your LFP with unsolicited advice. Michael was very polite to you ... he said specifically, he did not want anyone to derail your recruitment efforts and go off on rules-related tangents. Clearly, you do not need or want my help but I never offered to help you. I was addressing Zwig's rather shocking statement. I did not say anything to you at all.
