A more advanced Dynamic Lighting system

Currently, the Dynamic Lighting system only has support to toggle the dynamic lighting between Darkness and Light, with players only able to generate normal and dim light. The system doesn't allow you however to account for magic darkness and for areas where the default lighting may be other than darkness or light. My suggestion would be to modify the Dynamic Lighting system so that on each page, a light level can be set Light levels 4= Bright Light 3= Normal Light 2=Dim Light 1=Darkness Then, allow players and objects to emanate darkness in the same way that they emanate light effects. Finally, allow the GM to assign a strength to the light being generated to determine what happens when conflicting darkness and light are brought together.

Actually dynamic lighting has full, dim, and no light.  Misread your first paragraph. The shadow would be a larger strain on a lot of people's computers and bandwidth. There are people out in the net that still use computers that are 5 - 10 yrs old and have to pay a charge based on their usage. Roll20 is was designed to be a VTT but more people are asking for video game style setup. That is a different horse in my opinion. Good suggestion though.
Well, to be honest I'm not at all sure what the requirements of implementing it would be, just I noticed it has become somewhat of a problem with what is otherwise a likeable system, because any time in my games someone uses a Darkness Spell, the dynamic lighting stuff just falls apart. Do I turn off the party's mundane lights? Do I re-enable them if they leave the darkness? Do I want to be doing that all game? What if someone is on the edge of the darkness? Mind you, it's not like it's super hard to work around, I just use circles to denote areas where the light isn't actually showing you what is present. All the same, it would be lovely if the dynamic lighting simply did that for you. But yes, I wholly understand and subscribe to the idea of keeping Roll20 a lightweight program that can run on machines other than top of the line rigs.

I use the fog of war and just hide the areas when they cast something like darkness. I usually have it activated but cleared from the map and just hide it when needed then later just remove it. It is boxy but it works ok especially in tight corridors or such which doesn't matter how it looks on the outside of the dynamic lines.
Fog of war starts everything out being dark though, which sometimes isn't helpful.
