Looking for market advice

Hi guys, I'm running a campaign set in an alternative 17th century Europe. I've been scouring the marketplace to little avail trying to find a nice token set to purchase. I've picked up a few 'human' packs, but most look too 'high fantasy', and the vast majority of packs out there include a lot of elves, and other fantasy races that just won't fit for my campaign. I'm not super impressed with the market place's search functionality so I was wondering if anyone has some recommendations? I'm eagerly looking to throw money at token packs, if I could be pointed in the right direction :). Plugging your own work is more than welcome!

Here are a few I can recommend (various artists) that I think might fit your criteria / setting, People Tokens <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/214/devi" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/214/devi</a>... <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/20/devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/20/devin</a>... <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/164/toke" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/164/toke</a>... Maps, objects, settings <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/321/arck" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/321/arck</a>... <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/491/vile" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/491/vile</a>... <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/450/old-" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/450/old-</a>... <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/266/old-world-style-set-2" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/266/old-world-style-set-2</a>
I second Devin's packs. On my phone so can't practically search at the moment but I believe he also has a "Pirate" pack which can work well depending on the nature of your game (I run 7th Sea which is piratey-alternate-17thcentury-Europe).
Thirding Devin's packs... of which I own like 90% of them... I spent way too much on tokens, lol.
You almost can't go wrong with Devin's stuff. All well proportioned with respect to each other as well, so you don't get hobbits that are the size of ogres.

As an alternative you could go for counter style tokens - this is the token format I eventually settled on: Queen Elaine Stefan Heilgrund Cardinal Verdugo El Vago Since we only use them for rough layout rather than in depth tactical combat, we decided 'portrait' tokens would be more suitable. They look reasonable even quite small on a grid and you can easily hit Shift+Z to show someone the new NPC they just met. I have a GIMP template for the frame, drop an appropriate image in and use a filter to give it a vague 'oil painting' effect.

Pringle. When I saw those counter tokens, my first thought was a themed Savage Worlds cards and I was seeing the Ace, King, Queen, and Jack.
Ha! Well I know what I'll be making when I get around to Savage Worlds then!

Unless the game you're using cares about the direction the character is facing, this kind of token works just fine even in a more tactical game. My D&D 4e game uses similar tokens for all PCs and NPCs, for example.
Thanks for the replies and the recommendations :). You just got the man a few more sales. Pringle, that's *exactly* what I'm doing for the PC's and most of the named NPC's. The tokens would be something to use for the 'brutes' (per squad) to make them stand out visually :).
Well to be 7th Sea specific these are some good Devin packs... All of his Heroic Characters packs contain *some* useful tokens but you will have to disregards the dwarves, elves, etc. Other than that it depends where your campaign is focused but here are some suggestions. (Free) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/23/devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/23/devin</a>... - I'm putting this first because it is the single best pack for 7th Sea, plenty of ideal brutes including some Vesten, some fencers, some nobles and plenty of pirates. (Free) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/28/devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/28/devin</a>... - Assorted, the guards make good Eisen, there are plenty of suitable civilians and a few that could serve for the Crescent Empire if you use it. ($4.99) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/31/devi" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/31/devi</a>... - Good for bandits, highwaymen, thugs, etc. ($4.99) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/315/devi" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/315/devi</a>... - Steampunk rather than swashbuckling but several would make ideal Explorers Society people. ($4.99) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/136/devi" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/136/devi</a>... - Vesten plain and simple. (Free) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/20/devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/20/devin</a>... - A whole bunch of civilians. ($4.99) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/214/devi" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/214/devi</a>... - A whole bunch more civilians. (Free) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/26/devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/26/devin</a>... - Mostly fantasy but there are two fencers, some fighters that would suit Eisen and a few others that could be useful. (Free) <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/20/devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/20/devin</a>... - Fantasy heavy but again some ideal Eisen and a few others. Aside from that if you're including Sidhe, Eisen Beasties and/or Syrneth in your campaign then there are a whole load of 'monster' packs available from Devin. Essentially, although the marketplace search isn't great <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search/Devin" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/search/Devin</a>... should give you plenty of choice.

Arr! <a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/181/yo-h" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/181/yo-h</a>... In all seriousness though I don't have any 17th century packs I've made. Would love to know what you settle on!

Yeah. Wow. No kidding. Because I used every search term I could think of for this subject, and didn't find half the ones you just listed, even though they look like the terms I searched for when I view the sets Pringle linked. Marketplace Search could use improvement, sure. But perhaps more importantly (?) these artists could be tagging their sets with a LOT more tags. Why would Devin not tag all these sets as "Humans", "Civilians", "Farmer", "People", "Commoners", and so on, so that they come up when someone searches for these terms? Sometimes it seems like the artist put 1 or 2 tags but didn't put a lot of other terms that other people would think to search for. Synonyms. More synonyms in the tags please. To improve findability.
