Hello everyone! First off, thanks for looking checking out the thread. Any of you that do give this a look are awesome simply because you're interested in Stargate, which is possibly one of the greatest science fiction settings written. At least, that's my opinion, and since it's my thread, I get to say it. ^_^
So, this post is really just a gauge of interest. AEG published a SG-1 roleplaying book a few years ago. It uses the (flawed) Spycraft/d20 system, but as most everyone knows, the story and the fun is more important than the rules, so I'm okay with this. I've had the book put up for years, and only two of my friends have ever shown interest in playing, and even then, only one was a fan of Stargate.
Since I showed up on here a little while back I figured this would be an interesting place to try and find potential players. I'm open to running the game, also open to playing if anyone has ran SG-1 before and would specifically like to GM. Open to level requests, and team ideas. I support Character creation being done individually, but that the group should discuss what they're building to form a cohesive team that can face more than just one or two kinds of obstacles.
For anyone who doesn't have the book, or does not know where to view a copy of the book, I'll list some simplified materials below.
Races: Obviously humans are going to be 99% of the players, with the rare Asgard, Jaffa or Tok'ra in the group. Though they are playable, I would rather see a group of humans. However, humans aren't just typical D&D humans, and instead have specialties that set them apart. The Marine Corps, the Navy, the Army and Air Force give different bonuses and penalties, as well as the option to be NID (Col Maybourne), Civilian Specialist (Daniel Jackson), Diplomatic Corps (Jacob Carter after accepting a Tok'ra, as well as other civilians), Engineering Corps (Both military [Naval Construction Batallion], and civilian contractors), and even the Russian Operations Unit.
Classes: Classes are more indicative of careers and training. Explorers are intuitive and adventurous. Pointmen are leaders and coordinators for a small team. Scientists are intelligent and logical individuals who revel in knowledge and puzzles. Scouts are brave and stealthy individuals. Soldiers... need I say more? And also the Jaffa Guardian class (Foot soldier). Prestige Classes also exist and include the Bodyguard, Field Analyst, Field Medic, Officer, Prime (Again, Jaffa), and Sniper.
Mechanics: The game plays remarkably similar to any other d20 game. It uses class progressions with BAB/Fort/Ref/Will, set skill points per level, same six ability scores and a number of repeated feats. However, a few mechanical differences stand out such as the removal of Gold or Wealth. As a military organization, equipment is issued and/or requisitioned. Gear can come in individual pieces for flavor and minor situation bonuses, while most comes in bundles chosen at character creation or the start of a mission by the player. Requisitioning is based on the amount of pull a character has is derived from pay-grade, side of house (Enlisted vs Warrant vs Commission), character level, chosen class, and bonuses from feats or favors earned. Hit points are done away with using the Vitality and Wounds system where in Vitality is the ability to dodge shots and storm-trooper like misses which slowly eat away as HP normally would. However, critical hits inflict direct damage to wounds (Equal to your Con). Wounds are limited, deplete quickly, and represent death, not fatigue. Anything else can be addressed later if it comes up.
So onto more specific details:
One thing to be aware of is time zone. I'm in US Central, which is -6:00 GMT. I'd like to start play between 6 and 7 my time, and end no later then midnight, or 0600GMT to 1200 GMT.
What I'm looking for in players:
1) Intelligent. I don't ask that you be a graduate student or even a college student. I do ask that you be smart enough to respect the science part of science fiction and be able to accept that using a canister of thermite will have negative effects as well.
2) Respectful. I want to be able to run a game, not babysit. I've yet to have any negative experiences on here, but I always feel it to be important to point out that there is no game in the history of RPGs that requires insulting one another or throwing a tantrum because someone else has the spot light.
3) Mature. This builds partially on respect, but also includes more story driven material as well. I'm not looking to put in a brother owning, rape loving, baby slaughtering, demi-god as an opponent, but I am looking to include slavery and murder. This won't be glossed over as "Ra has the girl executed." I want players who can accept that evil happens, and the Goa'uld are evil. Also, language. Every word doesn't need to be a curse word, but I don't expect 1960s Batman "Gee Wilikers, colonel. This is bad."
4) Respectful v2.0 I know that real life comes up, and some times games get missed. I have no problem with that, as I've missed a few games in my years playing. Usually I ask my players for a phone call, but online games warrant e-mail/IM. Just let someone know you're out and understand that if most of the group is still able to play, your character will be NPC'd as close to their normal self as possible, maybe even a little more cautious.
5) Literate. Building on Intelligent, I'm not looking for grad students. I'm just looking for people who can convey their thoughts clearly through text. No need to write three paragraphs an action, but something more than "Run for cover and spray bullets" would be nice.
What I'd like out of a potential DM.
See above, but with different examples. I want a DM who if I cause the side of a glider to tear open, it's aerodynamics makes it tough to fly. I want a DM who wants to run a game and be part of the story, not just telling people what they can do or can't. I'd like a DM that can really capture the vileness of the System Lords, while telling an enriching story. I'd like a DM that can commit to the game, and when unavailable, lets the players know. And I'd certain like (Really, require) a DM who can type well, is well spoken, and conveys both imagery and mood instead of just a description of a room.
So, on a final note, I'll leave this here for anyone to find. If this perks anyone's interest as a player or DM, please say something. If there's enough interest, I'd love to get something going with a group of like-minded people.
Thanks for taking the time to come to my little ad, and to read this far.
