Interest check: "Westmarches" style campaign in Numenera (7pm CEST/Europe)

Edited 1432981621
Note that unlike the online show, we will have a (hopefully stable) group, but the setting will be the same exploratory&roleplay-focused sandbox style. For now this is merely an interest check as both me and 'my' player are flexible enough to make any day of the week and we simply have no idea which one we should advertise for. First world problems and all that. Depending on the response I think the actual campaign will probably start in a month at the latest. So! Greetings everyone! Time: Weekly, 7pm GMT+1 for about 5 hours (breaks as needed) - day to be determined (edit: given recruitment we have now excluded Saturdays and Sundays) Software: Good mic (no snowstorms, no robot voices) required, we will likely work with google hangouts, skype or roll20 itself depending on what works best. The GM will have a webcam but it is by no means required of the players. System: Numenera with houseruled Beliefs&Instincts and we are considering adding an injury mechanic as well though we want to see how things go first. As this is a fantasy setting Cyphers etc. will simply be magical items. Players: We are now looking for 2 additional players (so we will have 5 overall, me not included) who are active, reliable and 18+. Newcomers are welcome as long as they take the group, me as the GM & the game itself seriously. The pitch, so to speak: A storm, a shipwreck, a 'new world' discovered. A basic village is soon established and some suicidal/brave people go out into the wilderness on this new frontier - discovering that actually, it is quite dangerous. Too dangerous. Adventurers are incredibly rare in this world, most people really just want to be the baker, the priest, the shopkeeper. why risk your life for what almost amounts to nothing in return, surely? Adventuring is not a common or safe profession (you are literally considered slightly insane by most people), so the player characters are the only ones interested in risking their lifes in the wilderness in hopes of making a fortune. Between sorties into the wilds PCs rest up, trade info, maybe help build up the village as their base of operations and plan their next foray. There was a party of people here before you arrived... but they never came back, their only legacy being this village, some rumors and knowledge of nearby landmarks. PCs get to explore anywhere they want in this new land, the only rule being that going back to civilized lands is off-limits — there are no adventures there, just peaceful retirement. The environment is dangerous. Very dangerous. PCs have to work together, observe closely and change strategies or they are going to get creamed. They also have to think and pick their battles - since they can go anywhere, there is nothing stopping them from strolling into areas that will wipe them out. ---- So yeah, contact me here or via pm if you are available at the times and for the amount of time mentioned above, interested in this kind of campaign (and tell me a bit about yourself, 'invite pls' or 'yeah i'll play' isn't helpful) along with at least the days you would be available for play. Looking forward to hear from you :)

Player BG: OK, I admittedly clicked on this because I thought this was something about Dragon Age, and know nothing about Westmarches. Then again, I often know little about the worlds that most of my campaigns happen in. Unless you are expecting us to catch references, then there should be no drop in performance there. I played plenty over the years, over many systems. I've not played with the specific system before, but I generally am able to learn the rules of a system in a day or 2 with the book(s), even more so than the GMs of my games (of course, I'm not an ass about it, but still). Time Availability: absolutely perfect. I can play on Friday to Sunday. If the game were to take place on Thursday, I'd be on average 2 to 3 hours late (thus I don't think it will really work). If we play on Fridays, then every other week, I won't be able to go more than 1.5 hours later than the quoted 5 hour game length (which should be just fine). Mic Quality + Software: Those I talk to via skype, and google hangouts say that my mic works well. Damned if any of my software could record my voice worth a damn, so I don't personally know, but those are the accounts of my fellow gamers. Roll 20 audio really hates my computers, so I can't really use it. Player Reliability. I showed up to an estimated 97% of the games at least a half hour early, the majority of the time with me prepared at least an hour early. And there is no instance in which I didn't attend a game and didn't tell someone. Am I OK with my character dying? Yeah. As long as it doesn't feel really cheap like falling into a pit trap that I couldn't have seen (or worse, falling into one that I could see but the check failed, lol). I generally distaste is "one-shots" that aren't made completely obvious that they are going to destroy you, anything else, even bad luck, I'm OK with. Say, I would be OK with dying by getting squashed by a 50 foot giant whom I picked a fight with....because I was acting stupid, lol. Question: Why are they not allowed back?
So far the response has honestly been better than I expected, we have enough interest to have scheduling conflicts ;) Thank you, Sango, for your interest as well. WestMarches isn't exactly a whole fleshed out world, just a type of campaign and it was the easiest way to say 'Numenera system but fantasy setting' that I could come up with. So no references or anything, I don't expect that. I'll note you down for Fridays to Sundays which as mentioned above leads to our first 'conflict' between players in scheduling but we'll see who is the best fit, maybe after talking to me you won't even want to play anyway, it happens *shrugs* (I am desperately trying to keep my expectations low, heh) In any case, we'll see. Mic etc. sounds good, I'll check on that whenever we talk (as will you with me). You would 'remove' roll20 as an option but eh, hangouts or skype seem to work just as well. Player Reliability: Awesome! Seriously, that sounds great. Dying: There will almost always be the option to run away or hide. If that should not be an option, there will always be hints in your surroundings or the encounter itself to give you an idea about its deadliness. Other than that since I actually haven't GMd a lot of combat in Numenera there will be some trial and error on that side for me as well. So yes, I dislike instant oneshots too unless you go up against a dragon during the first session. Thats, well, your fault then ;) As for your question: Your characters are allowed back to civilized lands - for retirement. The journey via ship takes a long time and your characters are at the frontier because they are bored, want riches fast, want adventure, want to selflessly clear this new land for actual settlers or are simply slightly too 'off' to live in normal society (an intense druidic type of character would be a good example). Its a bit of a 'thing' in the setting to keep people from, say, asking for backup from the civilized world. The civilized world doesn't care. I hope that answered your question, but if not you can always bring it up again during our chat (pm with my contact details incoming)
Bumping this, because my poor, fragile character still needs more meat shields valuable allies to explore the frontier with. Adventure awaits!
Ahh yes, the meatiest of Meat Shields line up. Anyway! I've only touched on the west-marches system once and then, the DM wasn't the best. After that though, i've been wanting to get back into it and this seems like a great opportunity to do so! Mic/Sound: I use Skype for most voice chats due to simple laziness though i'm fine attempting google hangout as well. My Mic is a good 7/10 and Skype doesn't seem to hate me too much so that's all fine there! Player Reliability: If we can discuss which days would be best for everyone, i'm set for 95% chance of being there. Even if i can't make it, i'll find a way to let you know in advanced. Dying: Long as it isn't something along the lines of "Drink the water and die" Kinda thing i'm set. I've had enough characters die to poor luck so it's honestly expected. Just try not to laugh too much with the 5 nat 1's in a row. Will be waiting for a reply! Thanks either way! Joshua

@Joshua Welcome, fellow member of the Karma Forsaken. Together, we shall spread our luck like the plague, and then when everyone is unlucky, no one will be.
I'd Love To Join. And Meatshield I shall be :). I've Seen some of The West Marches on itmeJP and I knew about it when it was on this Old School D&D blog. Mic/Sound: I've used Skype quite a bit And It works just fine and my Mic works just fine. Player Reliability: I can Make it on Thursday's, Tuesday's, Friday's and Saturday's and I'm set for 95% chance of being there if playing on those day's. If not I will tell either The DM or The entire Group I can't make it that day. Dying: I honestly don't really care if my Character dies. It just means a chance to play a different character. I hope you'll accept me. If not thanks for the Chance.
