Aww, gee. That sounds bad when put that way. It's a valid question. I will do my best to answer, and to fix this, going forward. I would say the biggest thing Sandoval did was shout "Strike colors!" and this had an effect on the Pirate captain (he seemingly surrendered and offered to help steer the ship). This was one of my favorite moments in the session so I would emphasize it. I know that sounds like a really small action, but it was a key point of the session and fulfilled where I asked Players to use the Pirate vocabulary. The other major section of gameplay did not involve action, but just outlining a chart of the 6 different lizardman factions and starting to figure out who-is-who. That took some time in the session. Also with low attendance at the start of the session, plus Hans missed the previous session, so the beginning hour was a lot of catching up & casual side conversation (talking about Europe geography, where Hans lives, and so on). And then I had 2 players read their journals (Gray and Solid), the main reasons were to give those players some Voice time, and also to help everyone recap the previous session. I had actually planned for a long period of combat in that session.... Where some combats we can see the party will win and I speed things along ("Everyone roll your attack again"), I knew in advance that the Pirate Captain would be a tough-mother, and he would call his pirates and lizard-friends to come from different doors on different sides of the ship deck. So I knew it would be a longer combat scene with round-by-round actions going around the table. The combat ended up taking about 4-5 rounds, and each round took several minutes to resolve, so that took up a period of time. It happened that I had ruled Sandoval would climb for 4 rounds, so you were just climbing for the entire time of that combat. I could have managed that better and said that you climbed before the battle started, that way you could have done more actions. That is how it happened. I will make an effort to make sure you and everyone gets more time for talking, roleplay, parlay, actions. Journals in these conditions Looking to write a journal and you might be short on paragraphs? Take a different approach this time. Write your Journal about Pirate terminology (Where did Sandoval pick up "Strike colors" and know how to say it at the critical moment?). Or, write your impressions about the 6 factions of lizardmen. Who do you think the 6 factions are? What are the motives of each? Which are potential allies, which are sworn enemies, and which are "in the middle" who can be swayed, parlayed, convinced, persuaded, intimidated, tricked, or forced into doing right & good in the world?
Before I read your whole post, this was just meant as smalltalk hahaha. And yeah the 'strike colors' part was cool! Just so you know, I really enjoyed yesterday.

*Grin.* Yes, I took it well enough. I know you're on board and I'm happy about this, be it discussion or small talk. At first I thought it was a PM, but after posting my reply, I noticed it was a group discussion thread. Thread is open for the other players to respond and talk this week, and I will stand clear because I'm going on a big camping trip + work, starting tomorrow. Of course I also took it seriously and took it on-board. I'm all about participation, inclusion, and creativity. It's really important to me for every Player to get involved and express their character at multiple points in every game session attended. I wouldn't want anyone to feel sidelined for long, in this.
Okay, to respond to your post: I made a lot of notes, I will have plenty to cover my journal. We only started 'gaming' halfway into the session so no wonder we didn't get much done. I was also tired and ill so I didn't mind hanging back a bit and just listening., and just getting to know eachother a bit. About the combat, that was great! I felt like 20 enemies would jump us and my character genuinely felt climbing the crow's nest would prove a huge combat advantage that we would surely need. I hadn't felt as strongly before that we were in real trouble, so good job there! I would do it the same again another time. But Kryikh did a great job with crowd control and using the pirate slang proved effective, so ultimately my climbing action proved futile. I knew that could happen, but it could just as well have saved us if they overpowered us: it would have been hard for them to get to me without me shooting them full of holes first. The lizardmen politics are intruiging for me and my mind has been racing so you are keeping me busy. I have a couple ideas and will hopefully approach you in pm soon with them. Can't wait!
And I do feel Torvald was picking on Sandoval. I guess Dwarfs just can't appreciate a tactical move...

Awesome, Hans. Regarding PM just remember that I'll be super-busy from now til next session time. I'll read when I can & respond if able, but probably won't be able to type much from tomorrow til next Tuesday. You guys have killed sooo many of the pirates. I would have to count them up, but I believe it is more than 20 by now. Most of their crew. There were 4 in their den in an early session, then another dozen when you exited the alchemist hidden laboratory. Another 8-10 including Sanabel and the 2 gnolls in the sea cave. In the session before (the one Hans missed), the party had Mitel and Fergel go off to the abandoned mansion, to send a false signal to the pirates, using the bullseye lantern. That action drew-off another jolly-boat crew of pirates, who have gone to the sea cave. (They could come back, in time.) And the party mounted the ship, and quickly dispatched 4 pirates on-deck then. Pirates are also notoriously mutinous and watch out for their own skin first. They'd obey their Captain til death, only so long as their captain has the position of command and power. If someone else gets an edge over their captain, some pirates are likely to turn sides, or flee if able. There might be a few more pirates below-deck, or locked in the as-yet unopened rooms, who opted not to join the main deck fight, for various reasons of their own. Drunk, asleep, afraid, or mutinous disloyal doublecrossers. Already, at the end of last session, Torvald and Kaz went below-deck with Jaxon, and dispatched 3 more dastardly pirates in their crew chamber, and another of Vessik's lizardman archers in the cargo hold. They let the Pirate Dog live. So that's why the main deck fight was against Pirate Captain + a handful of pirates. It could have easily turned into a larger scale battle, if more of the pirates were still aboard ship.
