Potential Stargate SG-1 game

Hello everyone! First off, thanks for looking checking out the thread. Any of you that do give this a look are awesome simply because you're interested in Stargate, which is possibly one of the greatest science fiction settings written. At least, that's my opinion, and since it's my thread, I get to say it. ^_^ So, this post is really just a gauge of interest. AEG published a SG-1 roleplaying book a few years ago. It uses the (flawed) Spycraft/d20 system, but as most everyone knows, the story and the fun is more important than the rules, so I'm okay with this. I've had the book put up for years, and only two of my friends have ever shown interest in playing, and even then, only one was a fan of Stargate. Since I showed up on here a little while back I figured this would be an interesting place to try and find potential players. I'm open to running the game, also open to playing if anyone has ran SG-1 before and would specifically like to GM. Open to level requests, and team ideas. I support Character creation being done individually, but that the group should discuss what they're building to form a cohesive team that can face more than just one or two kinds of obstacles. For anyone who doesn't have the book, or does not know where to view a copy of the book, I'll list some simplified materials below. Races: Obviously humans are going to be 99% of the players, with the rare Asgard, Jaffa or Tok'ra in the group. Though they are playable, I would rather see a group of humans. However, humans aren't just typical D&D humans, and instead have specialties that set them apart. The Marine Corps, the Navy, the Army and Air Force give different bonuses and penalties, as well as the option to be NID (Col Maybourne), Civilian Specialist (Daniel Jackson), Diplomatic Corps (Jacob Carter after accepting a Tok'ra, as well as other civilians), Engineering Corps (Both military [Naval Construction Batallion], and civilian contractors), and even the Russian Operations Unit. Classes: Classes are more indicative of careers and training. Explorers are intuitive and adventurous. Pointmen are leaders and coordinators for a small team. Scientists are intelligent and logical individuals who revel in knowledge and puzzles. Scouts are brave and stealthy individuals. Soldiers... need I say more? And also the Jaffa Guardian class (Foot soldier). Prestige Classes also exist and include the Bodyguard, Field Analyst, Field Medic, Officer, Prime (Again, Jaffa), and Sniper. Mechanics: The game plays remarkably similar to any other d20 game. It uses class progressions with BAB/Fort/Ref/Will, set skill points per level, same six ability scores and a number of repeated feats. However, a few mechanical differences stand out such as the removal of Gold or Wealth. As a military organization, equipment is issued and/or requisitioned. Gear can come in individual pieces for flavor and minor situation bonuses, while most comes in bundles chosen at character creation or the start of a mission by the player. Requisitioning is based on the amount of pull a character has is derived from pay-grade, side of house (Enlisted vs Warrant vs Commission), character level, chosen class, and bonuses from feats or favors earned. Hit points are done away with using the Vitality and Wounds system where in Vitality is the ability to dodge shots and storm-trooper like misses which slowly eat away as HP normally would. However, critical hits inflict direct damage to wounds (Equal to your Con). Wounds are limited, deplete quickly, and represent death, not fatigue. Anything else can be addressed later if it comes up. So onto more specific details: One thing to be aware of is time zone. I'm in US Central, which is -6:00 GMT. I'd like to start play between 6 and 7 my time, and end no later then midnight, or 0600GMT to 1200 GMT. What I'm looking for in players: 1) Intelligent. I don't ask that you be a graduate student or even a college student. I do ask that you be smart enough to respect the science part of science fiction and be able to accept that using a canister of thermite will have negative effects as well. 2) Respectful. I want to be able to run a game, not babysit. I've yet to have any negative experiences on here, but I always feel it to be important to point out that there is no game in the history of RPGs that requires insulting one another or throwing a tantrum because someone else has the spot light. 3) Mature. This builds partially on respect, but also includes more story driven material as well. I'm not looking to put in a brother owning, rape loving, baby slaughtering, demi-god as an opponent, but I am looking to include slavery and murder. This won't be glossed over as "Ra has the girl executed." I want players who can accept that evil happens, and the Goa'uld are evil. Also, language. Every word doesn't need to be a curse word, but I don't expect 1960s Batman "Gee Wilikers, colonel. This is bad." 4) Respectful v2.0 I know that real life comes up, and some times games get missed. I have no problem with that, as I've missed a few games in my years playing. Usually I ask my players for a phone call, but online games warrant e-mail/IM. Just let someone know you're out and understand that if most of the group is still able to play, your character will be NPC'd as close to their normal self as possible, maybe even a little more cautious. 5) Literate. Building on Intelligent, I'm not looking for grad students. I'm just looking for people who can convey their thoughts clearly through text. No need to write three paragraphs an action, but something more than "Run for cover and spray bullets" would be nice. What I'd like out of a potential DM. See above, but with different examples. I want a DM who if I cause the side of a glider to tear open, it's aerodynamics makes it tough to fly. I want a DM who wants to run a game and be part of the story, not just telling people what they can do or can't. I'd like a DM that can really capture the vileness of the System Lords, while telling an enriching story. I'd like a DM that can commit to the game, and when unavailable, lets the players know. And I'd certain like (Really, require) a DM who can type well, is well spoken, and conveys both imagery and mood instead of just a description of a room. So, on a final note, I'll leave this here for anyone to find. If this perks anyone's interest as a player or DM, please say something. If there's enough interest, I'd love to get something going with a group of like-minded people. Thanks for taking the time to come to my little ad, and to read this far. George
Hello, well I'm an fan of stargate (huge fan watched every episode of all the shows). But I'm rather new to this kind of stuff, but I am willing to take an swing at being an DM (Or player), I got an great imagination and I like making up stories. Also from what it seems you want an more roleplay heavy rpg, and I'm fine with that.
I would love to play this, may have a conflicting schedule though as my work schedule is in constant rotation. Too bad though, stargate was one of my favorite shows
Ah, Jeremy brings up a good point, something I intended to say in my mass of ramblings before. I am completely open to scheduling, including time, day, and frequency of play. If we can find a good group, I will do my best to tweak my schedule to match to play. Rolando: I would highly suggest starting as a player, and welcome you to do so. Jumping into a game as DM may be a little heavy, and I'd hate for it to risk pushing away someone from the gaming community. However, if you really feel you have it to take the reigns, I will not complain. Jeremy: Keep eyes over here and feel free to discuss. I'm looking for something, and as I've said, willing to work to make this go. This is something I'm quite interested in getting off the ground, and would enjoy having additional fans of the series wanting to delve into the universe.
I Left off at Atlantis , would it be pertinent to have knowledge of the later series that followed? The times I can gauruntee availability is after 930 pm PST, other wise it's pretty touch and go
That depends on the group as a whole. If most people want to do an Atlantis game, we can add that in. If they would rather do something pre-Atlantis, that can be done. We can also very easily do something during/after Atlantis and just have it as background to the setting. For me, it's all about what's going to interest everyone the most, and how to run it efficiently.
I'm good for any setting of stargate, and like i said before im happy to be an player just offering to be DM if no one else wanted to be. Also I'm free most days after 3 PM EST, except tuesday and wensday
I might be in, problem is that I'm from Australia so if you could do the games Friday or Saturday your time then I'm in for sure (I'm GMT+10) I'm a huge fan of Stargate I literally grew up with it since it was the show that started right as I got home from school. I'm not a fan of Atlantis though so I'd prefer it if we stayed in the SGC but I'll still play if we go to the Pegasus galaxy.
Hello all! Sorry I've been silent a couple of days. This last week has been extremely hectic between resume mailings and a couple of job interviews, plus helping to paint at the in-laws! Just getting back to say something over this way now. So I like that there is potential for an SG-1 game. I have two friends ready to join Roll20 (Actually, I believe already have and just aren't in touch yet.) to play in this. That said, I'm also still looking for more people. Having talked to my friends, though, I think I have a very entertaining manner to run a game that would be enjoyable for all. I present to you all, two options! 1) Our campaign begins as Daniel Jackson figures out the secret to the StarGate and activates it! The players in the campaign will escort Jackson through the gate and explore the strange new world on their on. As the campaign unfolds, the players will explore the galaxy at the same pace as the series, many of the same challenges being faced at the time, but the players can change the outcomes! Want to build a military base near the Nox? Go for it! Think you can take on the Asgard fleet? Make that call! Think the Goa'uld are worthy allying with? Want to scout for them, trade maps, or serve for their technology? It's YOUR world this time; you are SG-1 2) The game begins shortly after successful contact with the Tok'Ra. The players will take the role of another SG Team (depending on the preferences of the players). This team will not be as high profile as SG-1, taking mostly smaller missions that further the efforts of the SGC in secondary manners. Working security with the Tok'Ra or Jaffa, escort duties and peace missions for near-human races. Scientific research on other planets, or continued contact assignments. The story will revolve around PARTS of the SG-1 TV story, but will be almost entirely of my own design. So, that said, I'm going to bounce over to the campaign page and start setting up something there. I'll post a link to it when I have it all set up, but for now, who would want to play out the SG-1 canon, and who would like to play an entirely original story? If you'd like to do our own story entirely, I'm curious what kind of team everyone would want to create? The standard (canon) team assignments (and number of members) are Covert Ops (4-6), Diplomatic Ops (4), Engineering Corps (6), Exploration (4), Marine Combat Unit (6), Medical Unit (4), Scientific Ops (6), and Search and Rescue (6). I'm sure at least one of these stands out to each of you, so tell me what you see and sounds most fun. Also, if the group leans towards say, Search and Rescue, but we only have 4 players, I'd be glad to assign a couple of NPCs to the group to help out.
Sounds great, personally I'd lean more towards option two since that way our prior knowledge of the series wont give us an unfair advantage, and because the SGC wouldn't have lvl 1 characters making up SG1 Also shotgun on being the scientist
Well just a side note, option one doesn't mean knowing the series is an advantage. I'm not going to feed you every scene identical, just as I don't expect your characters to use information that's unavailable to them. Besides, the choices you make will chance a number of factors. Simply because everything begins falling into place the same, doesn't mean that every plan will be the same. If the group chooses explosives constantly to speed up things, then understand that the Goa'uld will begin planning for explosives! Also, in option 1, you wouldn't necessarily have to be level 1. In addition, since the SGC doesn't hire based on your character level, then players could easily be first level. The game is designed to have level one characters in the SGC. Rank and background are important to the SGC. That's why level one characters can be SSgt or Major. Remember, NPC classes are roughly 1/3 of a character class. /shrug
I like the sound of option 1 , though I am not sure I will always be available to play starting at that early of a time, I never have the same work schedule, so conflicts are pretty much a given sooner or later.
I kinda like option 2, though option 1 would be interesting i kind of like the style of the series. also what time and day would it start?
That's something I wanted the players to get a chance to discuss. What times are everyone available and what time zones are we in? George: CST (-6:00 GMT) (And two friends) Jeremy: PST (-8:00 GMT) Rolando: EST (-5:00 GMT) Tate: (+10:00 GMT) Brisbane area? Looking at what's been said, Jeremy is only available after 2130 his time. That becomes 2330 for me and 0030 for Rolando. That's already a bit of a stretch for time, but COULD be doable under the right circumstances for the following day. However, that makes playing with Tate much easier, as it puts the game at something akin to 3 in the afternoon. Also, as my post initially said, I'm looking for a game starting near (give and hour adjustment either way) between 1800 and 1900 (GMT -6:00) but day is really not a concern, as only Tuesdays are tied up, and really, who plays on a Tuesday? Let me ask how that works for others? That would be a 4-5pm start of game for Jeremy and a 7 to 8pm start for Rolando. Tate, that would put you around... a 9-10 am start of game, so likely only a weekend game. Comments? Requests?
Im fine wit an 7 or 8 pm start and fridays seem like an good time.
In my time here are the days and times i can start Monday-tuesday: 4:00 Wednesday-Thursday: ~6:00 Friday: 3:30 Saturday-Sunday: N/A So im fine with the starting times that you give just so long as its on Monday,Tuesday or Friday
Sadly, Tate, I think your time zone is going to create a heavy conflict with schedules. As of now, the earliest we could start a game is 1230 my time Thursday nights. Monday and Tuesday games for you are after 1 am, and your W/Th games would be 3am starting times. Those start times conflict entirely with the times I posted originally, and just aren't going to be feasible on my end.
Thats fine, hope you guys have a fun time :D
damn :/
Is this still open? If so I'm interested I really enjoyed SG-1, I'm a big fan of mythology and really enjoyed their take on ancient gods as evil overlords. I remember reading through the book a while back, and while I found it interesting (more because I really like Stargate), it wasn't for my gaming group (Scifi games in general rarely survive with them for some reason). I'm in Central time as well, and my schedule is wide open except for Saturdays (I run a pathfinder game at the local card shop with friends). I'm more interested in option 2.
im not sure, i enjoyed it too.
