Is there any risk of Roll20 shutting down?

I've just noticed that the support bar for Roll20 is dangerously low. I found out about the service this week and it would be really depressing to see it die so soon. I love every single aspect of it, it's just the best VTT out there for me. After trying quite a load of Virtual tabletops, this is the only one that I could get comfortable with. Can you guys really "keep the lights on"?
Also curious/worried. Considering the amount of activity I'd say it looks like they can, but getting a definite "Yes, we can keep the lights on." would be nice.

There's no need to fret. Roll20 is not at risk of shutting down in the near future. Operations are presently running off the money that was received via the Kickstarter campaign. What that bar represents on the subscriptions page is the estimate of subscriptions we'll need to keep our systems up and running once we run out of our Kickstarter reserves. Hopefully by the time the Kickstarter funds are depleted, we'll have enough subscriptions to not only keep the lights on, but to also pay for a big suite of future content and development!
How many subscriptions do you need to keep the light on?
How many subscriptions do you need to keep the light on? Enough to get to that first line on the supporters page :) Sharing more of the financial details probably isn't in the cards. It quickly turns into threads of people saying "well I think you should get hosting over here or do this or switch to technology X" to try and "help" save money instead of just focusing on getting the subscriber count up :)
Once I am working more actively I am going to help out
Once I am working more actively I am going to help out Great to hear!
I am currently waiting on the Dynamic Lighting Feature to launch before deciding if I wish to use my money to back it up. If the Dynamic Lighting is as good as it looks with little to no glitches, then I will more than likely subscribe.
Is it possible that there will be an option to just donate some money in the future? I'm not sure I want to commit to a subscription, but I'd love to donate $10 every now and then or whatever if it helps the service out. Also I have a suggestion for something that might make the supporter or mentor subs more compelling: access to some of the paid marketplace tiles/tokens for free while you are a subscriber.
As the Moderators have said in this thread, there is no immediate risk of Roll20 shutting down. We're going to be around for a long time, we assure you. What we're showing with that bar is basically "if we continue to run the site for free, and 300 new people a day continue to show up, this is what we we'll need to keep the site running forever." It's based on a percentage -- so the more users that sign up, the more need to subscribe. We will do whatever it takes to keep Roll20 up and running, we just want to be transparent to the community about where we're at in that process.
What is eating up the most cost? Development? Bandwidth? I ask because that was a thought I had awhile back with another VTT, how smart their model was to use so much of Google+ and Google Docs to cut their bandwidth leaving most of the money to development cost. I get that a lot of people don't like Google+, but i would rather be forced to use a Social Media platform than to lose the VTT I love due to cost. As in cost, I have no desire to chip money in under the current plans. As someone said above, I would love to donate $10-$15, I just know that if I chip in for a few months and stop what happens to all the files on the additional space? Another thing that may be an option is to allow people to donate under someone. Say 5 players wants to chip in a $1 a month for their DM so he can get the upgrade.
Relying on another service (like Google Hangouts) for 100% of our operations is not feasible in the long run, as Google can choose to change how that service works or start charging for it at any time, and then we'd be in trouble.
Just a quick comment related to keeping the lights on. To begin I'm not connected to roll 20 other than I was given a link online from my son and followed it, kicked in $10.00 to see what its all about! If you want roll 20 to succeed then send them money! Sign up for a mentor account and pay by the month. Its a great service , does what it should (a glitch here or there but no big deal) it enhances your gaming experience. Programming takes time! That's time away from life! I think the Roll 20 Team has been reasonable in its pricing. I'll add this, how much have you spent on video games and / or role playing games this past year? What about popcorn at the last movie? How much did you spend on Pizza , Soda , and Chips for last week game? $10 a month to enhance your game is well worth the price! If your funds are tight have each person kick in $1.00 or more. Maybe have each person eat 1 less slice of that pizza and poof there's the $10.00 to kick into the system. Great idea's die often because people want things for free or say they'll wait until XX is done then I'll contribute. Then there's the next thing! Contribute! You'll be glad you did and you'll have hours of fun. Maybe then you can answer the question Who is John Gault? just my 2 cents

You can just sub, then unsub. The Devs get $10 and you get all the features of being a mentor for a month.

Maybe then you can answer the question Who is John Gault? just my 2 cents I agree with most of what you said but i am saving up cos I'm going on holiday at the end of this month so i am literally saving every penny i have so it is not always easy to subscribe just like that. But i will subscribe after my holiday is done :)
I agree. The price for service is great for the perks you get and you can easily feed players for your game or join a game. where I live its hard to get enough players together for a face to face game but with roll20's setup I literally have 11 players in my game right now. The only problem I have is the voice/video chat does have a problem of lagging with more than three people, but other than that I love the tabletop. The dynamic lighting rocks and I can't wait to see what else they come up with for it.

But...but...I'm spending that money on video games, popcorn, pizza, soda and chips! Cannot resist urge to say, "but... but... I want to spend all my time playing video games, eating popcorn, pizza, soda and chips!" Seriously, though, it looks like I'm not gonna get to play RE6, and it is all Roll20's fault. Halo 4 is still a toss up. :( That said, had some meetings this weekend about upcoming supporter/mentor benefits, and they're gonna be coooool...
But seriously, good luck to you. This is an awesome service and I hope y'all stay successful.
