Forum Games

Hey, sorry if this has been discussed already, but searching the entire site for "forum games" returned, I think, all the results, ever. :) My question is: Would Roll20 be interested in hosting forum components to online games? Somewhere I could keep the narrative going between live sessions, have everyone keep updated character sheets, and otherwise continue the adventure? All that would really be needed is a new section of the forums and the ability for a player moderator to approve participants. Thoughts?
If you go to <a href="http://app.roll20.net/campaigns/search/" rel="nofollow">http://app.roll20.net/campaigns/search/</a> and click on your campaign there is a Campaign Discussion section. This is usable by all members of the campaign and can be used for just this purpose.
Ahh, thanks! I had seen that earlier but thought it was only a Facebook style comment list, not a fully functional forum system. Woo! Game on!
Well it isn't a multi-topic system but it is a chronological discussion tool.
Oh, then it is pretty much a Facebook style comment list. Let me revise my original question into a suggestion then: Could we possibly turn that into a full forum system? :)
Bump. Not to be a pest, but I'd really love to see the campaign comment section expanded out into a full, multi-topic forum system. One thing I love to do in my online games is to keep the action going, so to speak, between live sessions. A good forum system can be used to keep up-to-date character sheets, host player discussions on where to go and what to do next in sandbox-style games, divide up treasure, and address single player activities, such as when the party rogue wants to run around at night robbing stores, without having to do all of that during your preciously short live game time. Just to take it a step further and really make it a Roll20 thing, you could make it so the forums could link to the tabletop and vice versa. For example, a forum post could link right to a game handout, or a forum topic could automatically be generated during the game by the GM. Perhaps the best way to really own the forum system as a Roll20 exclusive would be to add dice mechanics in a special display along with each post. Maybe you could even link it to the reply system, so the GM could post a topic like "there's a locked door" and each player could reply to that topic with a roll, along with a post like "I force the door" or "I try to pick the lock."
Also, it would really help if the input window for campaign chat would be at the top instead of at the bottom, since new posts show up at the top. Otherwise, you read the latest post and when you want to reply, you have to scroll all the way down.
Nathan, No problem, you're not being a pest at all. We're definitely considering expanding the "Campaign Landing page", but right now it's in a long list of things that we'd love to do, and unfortunately time is a finite resource around here right now. If you haven't already, you may want to check out Obsidian Portal (<a href="http://obsidianportal.com" rel="nofollow">http://obsidianportal.com</a>). They offer a wiki system that allows you to keep track of some of the things you're talking about. I know it's not the most optimal solution since it's another tool to use, but for now it might serve you well. There are some of your suggestions that will hopefully get integrated sooner than others, though, and we'll keep you up to date. Thanks, RD
Thanks Riley! Roll20 is working out great so far and I'm really excited to see where it goes from here. Keep up the good work!
Hello, This is my first time here, at the suggestion of a friend of mine. One of the very first questions I had was the same as Nathan brought up. "Can I have an RP'd narrative, and plot, etc...?" attached to my game. As you said, Obsidian portal is pretty cool. Myth-Weavers is also one that has a butt-load of cool 'story' type tools that can integrate into the story. Having integrated tools in the forum, as nice as it would be, isn't the reason I was interested though. I enjoy players who are like me, and like RP, and like to embellish the tale between games by adding what they see to the setting. So far, I've really liked what I've seen here. I am a programmer myself and can fully appreciate the sacrifices and work that you have obviously made to get this up and running - things that will likely never be known to anyone but you and the circle of folks around you. I've already created a campaign and intend to experiment with it for a bit... I will hopefully have some helpful comments then. Thanks! JZouk /Salute.
The new campaign forum is wonderful, but will there be an option to get email notifications of posts like in the general forums "Follow Topic'? That would be really helpful, and I don't see it yet...
