Hi. Some of them are similar. Have you seen any play sessions on youtube? Also, people helping you out are going to want to know what time zone you are in, and time available. Do you have any game books, etc.
I do not own anything but a few assorted dice. my time zone is central

If you would like to try a Free game that is similar to the early versions of Basic D&D, I offer new players and beginners to join in for a slot in my open table game of Basic Fantasy RPG. It is like 1980's Basic D&D and is a good starting place to learn, both because the rules are simplified and basic, also because the rule book is free in PDF or only $5 to buy in print on Amazon. The next game will be on a Thursday, probably July 23, in the late-afternoon to evening or possibly night hours (USA times, I'm Central too). We make your character in about 15 minutes (after you pre-read the first 54 pages of the free rulebook on your own time ahead of gameday). From there we will play dungeons and dragons exploring entirely in a dungeon underground, fighting monsters, overcome traps, uncover mysteries, meet other characters, for a couple hours. If you are interested, click my name and send me a Private Message asking to join Basic Fantasy game, and mention the campaign title: "Explore Dungeons Inside A Strange World". Either way, happy adventuring!
If you want to learn the ropes I've got a good adventure I'm starting for Pathfinder, It's an off shoot of d&d I think more refined, But I've also played d&d 1-3.5 so I can help there too
