Abandon all hope..
yea. Our DM stopped contacting us and I had 4 players in a lobby and i guess it was a bit of a hail mary. Now I'm back on the hunt for a DM. it was a 5e in EST. it was a first time kind of meet and greet game.

I doubt you'll find a DM 'on demand'. Its no so much a multiplayer lobby 'waiting for host' type situation :) Most would want to schedule a time, meet the players, discuss play style and characters, approve characters created, go over his house rules (if any), discuss a setting and so forth. But if you create a new post, with what type of gameplay you guys prefer (roleplay, story driven, open world, monty haul, dungeon crawl, munchkin, what have you) , the game itself, timezone and time, length of session your seeking, and so on Im sure you can find a new DM for your next session.
Well I was hoping to have like a beginner friendly campaign start with an experienced DM. So it's as much about learning as enjoying and experiencing the game. I think it's easier to find players then DMs.

Well it can be hard to find both that are worth keeping (or that sticks around). There is plenty of players for GM/DM's to find. But finding ones that work with your play style and you get along with is difficult. For example our core group is real life friends, and all had the same mindset going into our game. We have had a handful of outside players join, some worked out great, others no so much. So I believe finding players IS easy, finding players that will stick around long enough to be 'members' of your core group is very difficult. Same goes for finding a DM to some degree, finding one that runs it in a style you like (a good DM can adapt to whatever the players want, but they are a rare find). But the advantage is you only need to find one that does, vs a DM needing to find 1/2 a dozen or so players that can, PLUS all get along with each other.
I can see that. I guess the task is a bit daunting to a new player. It just seems hard to break into Tabletop RPGs when you have no experience in it. So far the community seems accepting but executing an actual game seems the biggest difficulty

Well at least take comfort that its FAR easier than it was before online was a possibility. In person you had to know someone that played, hoped the DM was allowing new players, go to their house/wherever they played, talk to them, find out if they want to you to play and so on. :) Id suggest if your new to it, look around in the looking for players posts and find someone running a one-shot game to get a quick crash course in it, and start making connections from there. Once you gamed once or twice with some people, your network of DM's and players will expand and 'get your foot in the door' so to speak.
DXWarlock, great responses. I'm copying some of that down. Yeah to break in one shots are typically the way to go. I always hire new to roll20 or 5e people for 5e campaigns, but I'm full. Doubtless though we'll game together sometime. I run one shots set in my 5e campaign, just won't be doing it for a few weeks. Good luck, Cullen.
