Why must "mobile-friendly" website "upgrades" always force desktop users along for the ride?

Topic. The new look is horrible.  Everything is too large and spread out and a mess.  I'm so sick of this plague of so-called modern web design that caters solely to smart phone users while making the experience miserable for the rest of us.  At least they don't seem to have removed functionality in the name of minimalism...yet...
I agree but thankfully the software is just as great as before. :)
You speak for many of us (I hope), or at least me.  Websites are being butchered for the sake of a mobile market, and there isn't a middle ground for most sites.  Most, if not all, will not provide a desktop version and mobile version.  It's one or the other; if you want to be competitive with good Google results, you go mobile.
I don't think any of the development team is a primary mobile user, so this was not part of our decision making process.
