Looking to Run Crossover Game of Some Sort, Seeking Players (MnM 3e)

I'm going to be honest, I love games based on other media. On Myth-Weavers (a Play By Post RPG website), I started about 4 different games, each of which fell apart for different reasons (lack of response time, interest died down, spent too much time looking up rules, ect.), so I figured I would have better luck if I tried doing something more real-time. So then it hit me, why not use this site? Before I figure out the plot, I need to figure out what kind of game everyone wants to play, if anyone wants to play at all. Here's a few options I had in mind; tell me which ones you think work. ====Setting==== Setting Salad Bowl: A setting where characters where all sorts of characters co-exsist in the same world, and always have. The only thing initially set in stone is that the game takes place in the modern day; any backstorys the PCs write will automatically be incorporated into the game's canon. Contradictions between backstories (such as the nature of magic and the organizations who control it's use) will be resolved prior to the game, and can even serve as plot hooks. Multiverse: Different characters come from different worlds/universes, and the PCs will probably need to travel to different worlds on their quest. For me, Kingdom Hearts is the default whenever I need a multiverse cosmology, though if you have another suggestion I would love to hear it. Cataclysm: The multiverse was shattered by a dimensional cataclysm of some sort. Though some semblence of order has been restored, the source of the disaster has yet to be identified. Some Combination of the Above: A multiverse setting with a "main" world that the game takes place in, a dimensional cataclysm in progress, a post-apocalyptic, or even post-post-apocalyptic salad bowl setting are all valid options. ====Player Characters==== The Brave and the Bold: Everyone picks an established character from a setting of their choice. Backstory alterations can be made to fit the setting better, or to put a new spin on a well-known character. Very fun to play, tends to give lots of backstory to build on, but may stifle character development. Original Generation: Everyone plays as OCs (Original Characters), though in a multiverse setting they can come from other established worlds (for instance, an Alchemist from Fullmetal Alchemist, or a Mutant from the Marvel universe). All Star Team Up: A mix of the two; players can choose to play as OCs or established characters. My default option. ====Campaign Goals==== Crisis: A disaster has happened, or is about to happen, and the PCs are part of a team that has come together (either by chance or choice) to deal with it. Justice League: As above, but rather than one single threat the team deals with multiple smaller, episodic threats over the course of the Campaign instead of one big threat. My default option. To Boldly Go!: The PCs are exploring an unknown frontier of some sort. Works best in a multiverse setting. Villain Game: The PCs are villains (or at least anti-heroes) who have come together for a common purpose, such as to pull off a heist or take over the world. Everyone needs to agree on the tone of the game in order for this to work, however. Compare Lupin III, for instance, to some of the darker versions of The Joker. Both are criminals and revel in their status, but while Lupin III is a pretty nice guy, The Joker tends to leave a trail of corpses in his wake. ====Personal Taste==== It would also help if you let me know what your favorite Anime/Video Games/Books/Tv Shows are, so I can avoid throwing in things none of you have ever heard of.
This looks interesting. My vote would be for a combo of multiverse with a cataclysm (I love Kingdom Hearts), with original generation and a Justice League of sorts. Also, what version of Mutants and Masterminds would you be using?
Third Edition. That's the one I have Hero Lab licensed for.
Nice, I've not had the opportunity to try 3rd edition. I hope this game happens.
Well lets hope more people read this post. It's been a couple days now and so far you're the only person who's shown any interest.
For setting I would go with a Cataclysm/Multiverse setting, perhaps where the cataclysm caused the multiverse(Crisis on Infinite Earths); splintered shards of the same reality and jazz. PCs: I like the all-star team up, it lets people who really want to play an established character do so and that guy with his really nice OC can throw him in. I love Crisis for goals (see setting)
I could never get into playing an established character; part of the fun is making my own legend, not living someone else's. That being said, I would totally play Spider-Man.
Hybrid works because someone who desperately wants to play Spiderman or Blue Beetle can, and someone who doesn't or has a cool original idea doesn't get the stinkeye for "not being an Avenger/JLA". TBH: considering who those groups have let in you can't really say they wouldn't let a psychic "Little Red Riding-Hood" powered by her hatred of pedophiles join.
Hmmm, that's a good point.

I could never get into playing an established character; part of the fun is making my own legend, not living someone else's. That being said, I would totally play Spider-Man. As much as I love making up characters, I also love playing established guys; I once played Tom Servo in a LARP, played Nozomu Itoshiki in a Dr. Who one-shot (Despair! The Cybermen have left me in despair!), and I once wrote a really, really detailed character sheet for Beat and Rhyme from The World Ends With You for someone else's crossover game (which, sadly I didn't get to play). I might do a "everyone must play an established character" one shot with Risus or something, . Anyway, Sunday probably works better for me than Saturday, and I'm not sure if I can start the game this weekend, since I still need to write up a plot. Still, if I have to, I can do the game on Saturday, and as soon as I think up a setting I'll put up a recruitment thingy. Untill then, you might want to mention a couple settings/genres/mediums you want me to focus on or avoid. Like, do you want more of a focus on comic book settings? Do you not want to see any anime characters? Let me know before I do something stupid like write out an adventure set on Cocoon when all the players hate Final Fantasy XIII with a passion.
Saturday or Sunday works for me.
You know what? This is something I'd really like to join in on. I'd never even heard of MnM before this so I did a cursory overlook of the srd and thought it was a cool concept. Not only that but it seemed to me to be forward and easy to understand. Also: I've always likes the concept of a multiverse. The first rping I got into was solely text based (system-less either by forum or chat) and the entirety of the chat was the multiverse. It always amused me when you could walk in and see a Roxas, original characters ranging from space marines to sorcerers, and an Eldrich abomination -- all at the same western saloon. I was so intrigued by this that I designed my first ever role play character in such a way that he made *less* sense outside such a setting that could change at a moments notice. Anyroad, as far as the original post goes: I think a combination of the three would be interesting. My thought for that would be that "cataclysm" that is neither instant or on a mass scale, but currently and always has been going on. It's less of an apocalyptic thing and more a process or tendency (like evolution, entropy, or osmosis) that draws all the separate worlds and universes together. This can provide a very maleable setting in which each individual world can be placed anywhere within the "salad bowl"/"multiverse" paradigm. The "older" worlds that have gone through the "cataclysm" longest would have the most connections and the most time to blend cults into a "salad bowl" setting. The "youngers" would be the most isolated and are just getting used the idea of outsiders. This gets interesting when you start thinking how such worlds would interact, making it a crisis of a very different kind, but this is getting way too detailed for just a suggestion. Otherwise, All-star team up sounds great, and original generation is a good second, but I don't quite care for Brave and the Bold. I really like the idea of Justice league, particularily in the setting I suggested, but To Boldy Go sounds very appealing as well if set in a multiverse setting (though it'd be possible to pull off decently in the setting I proposed, but it somehow loses it's magic). I personally don't care much for crises as it seems a little bland compared to the possibilities. Villain is... kinda a gamble: with the right characters, it sounds like it could be quite fun; however I Often find people will make villains that are "evil for evil's sake", antisocial loners, or any other type that makes for sub-par character development and interaction. tl;dr Sounds fun. Can I join?
So, it looks like we have potentially three people on board.
Glad to see another person showing interest! I'm still not sure what the plot's going to be exactly, but I've got a good idea about the setting; something that takes a bit of all three setting types that's very much inspired by Mass Effect. A while back (not sure how far, perhaps 50-100 years? It should be long enough so that things are "Buisness as Usual", but short enough so that we can still see the aftereffects) a race of interdimensional machines razed a path through the multiverse. They went from world to world through portals, destroying everything that dared oppose them, building up a base, and then moving on to the next world without so much as a word. Nobody knows why, but after a while it became clear that the machines weren't coming back anytime soon, so people started exploring the portal network. Inevitably, the explorers found The Nexus; a fertile, earth-like planet with no signs of civilization, save for the aforementioned Portals. There was a war, of course. There always is one. There were several, in fact. But thankfully the heroic actions of a few individuals were able to bring a truce before things got out of hand. The Nexus is now host to a mighty city, and acts as a seat of power for the entire network. And there's probably a council or something, I'm still working out the details. So, do you like what you hear so far? Please let me know if you have any other ideas for the setting.
I love me some Mass Effect, so I can say I like the Nexus aspect; an intermingling of multiple races and dimensions in one place is bound to be interesting.
While I also love mass effect, I actually didn't care much for the concept of the Citadel. There's just too much importance placed on it for me (you'd think quantum based communication would let them /not/ need to put all their beurocrats in one place) it also degraded all other planets to battlefields with statistics about atmosphere content, orbital periods and mineral resources. Part of the appeal of traveling to other planets is the distinct-ness of each place. Then again, that's probably just the game specifically. I think you'd be able to make the worlds unique.
Well, I liked the citadel for the galactic commerce more than the council; frankly, I hate the council with every fiber of my being, and if I could, I'd kill them (let them die) again in each game. The Citadel worked as an excellent meeting place for all of the various races; individual planetary exploration is great, but only on the citadel will you find each race doing what they do. I guess that's the reason Star Trek DS9 is my favorite of the series.
Update: I have a good idea of what the Nexus is actually like, and I have a good idea of the "crisis" I want the game to be about: explores can have discovered an "Observatory", a magical device that can channel energy across dimensions. While initially a mere curiosity, after doing the math some scientists realized that if an arbitrary number of them were activated simultaneously the fundamental nature of entire universes, or even the multiverse itself, could be rewritten. With this in mind, The Council (or whatever I'm going to call them) has put the PCs in charge of a special task force dedicated to prevent the towers from being activated, and/or figure out who built them in the first place. But as you probably expect, someone (or some-thing) is standing in the way of your progress... The plot is inspired by "The New Debate" of the Thirteen Colonies setting (see http://www.jagsrpg.org/), though the setting itself is original (at least as original as a mass-effect inspired multiverse can be). While I already have a couple important NPCs in mind (both allies and enemies), I'm going to hold off on deciding which worlds to visit until I hear about what settings you're familiar with, what you expect out of the game, and what kind of PCs you want to make.
I'm very interested. I want to play a cyberpunk assassin with no concept of death because, in her world, people respawn. Murder is just a neat way to get people to move while you take their things.
Very meta, but I have three problems with the concept: 1.If nobody can die, why isn't her world a squirming, infinitely dense mass of flesh? What happens if they die outside their home universe, or if someone else dies in your character's universe? What happens if you get really old? Is killing other people still a major crime, or is it just a matter of course? I'm just saying think about the physics of world she comes from a bit more. 2.Being an "Assassin" doesn't sound like a very useful career path since death apparently isn't very permanent. What's the point of spending thousands of dollars to have someone killed if they'll just come back in a few minutes/hours/days? Perhaps she could be sort of an "Displacement Specialist", who specializes in getting victims out of the picture by taking victims down non-lethally, and then hiding them somewhere they can't escape from, sedated and strapped to a life support system. This not only makes more sense, but it also allows your character to get along with heroes who have a thing against killing (assuming that becomes a problem). 3. I don't have a third problem to complain about. Either way, I look forward to seeing your application! Update: I have the big picture of the setting done, such as the main villains, their plan, and the answers to the "big questions". The smaller details will (hopefully) be filled in as they become relevant. I also have a good idea of what the first adventure is going to be about, though I have yet to make a formal plan.
So I am reading up on the 3rd edition rules. I'm not sure what sort of character I wish to play yet.
For a multiverse type setting it might be worth looking at the TORG rules.
1a) They're completely immortal & infertile. Respawning is a quirk of the world, not its inhabitants, so ex-pats die like normal people. 1b) Murder is basically just assault, as far as culture/law is concerned. Suicide is a valued medical technique as well as a means of transportation. I'm thinking that respawning also restores youth, so she'd want to go home every couple of years to rejuvenate. 2a) A more accurate job description would be "thief-for-hire". It just so happens that killing people make thievery a whole lot easier. Though now that I think about it, "Displacement Specialist" might be more fun than what I had originally planned. 2b) If interdimensional society is well established, then she'd be aware that death works differently in other worlds. She wouldn't have a well developed understanding of why, but she'd know that killing people doesn't go over as well outside her homeland and would act appropriately.
Glad to hear you put some thought into the world! Now, first adventure planning; since I still don't know what you guys like (HINT HINT HINT), the first adventure is going to be centered around The Nexus as opposed to any canon world. It might help if you had some familiarity with Final Fantasy Fate/Stay Night and Homestuck , but none of these will be required to understand the adventure, as it's not the sort of adventure that requires the player to understand incredibly complicated backstory elements.
Also, it's getting a little late to start the game this week, but there's a good chance I'll have the ad up this weekend and we'll be able to play next Saturday (or Sunday). So until then let me post some (preliminary) application requirements you should be preparing. I'm writing this very late at night so excuse me if I forgot something. * A Character Sheet; PL 10. If you are using something not from the core 3e books, let me know. You can play an established character from another franchise, or an original character of your own creation. * Some background on your character. This is important even if you are playing an established character, since not everyone knows who your character is and we need to know how his life has changed (if it changed at all) due to being part of a greater multiverse. Keep in mind that the Network was built 100 years ago; unless your character is immortal or a time traveler, he probably wasn't there when it happened. When I get the ad up I'll talk a bit more about the setting, but I'm purposefully going to leave details for the players to fill in. * A list of times you are available on Saturday and Sunday, EST. Sunday works best for me but if it's the most convenient date for everyone I can do Saturday instead. * A list of some of your favorite shows, books, movies, ect.
I won't be able to play next weekend. I'm going to be out of town from the 15th to the 22nd.
I won't be able to play next weekend. I'm going to be out of town from the 15th to the 22nd. That leaves me with four choices: 1. I work like a maniac to get the adventure finished by this saturday (I've got homework to do, so that's not gonna happen). 2. We wait patiently until the saturday after next to play. 3. We start the game next saturday (or sunday), and Darren can join the next session. 4. We start the game next saturday (or sunday), and the week after I DM a solo adventure with Darren to get him caught up. There may or may not be a group session that week. Option #3 is the most utilitarian, ensuring the most gameplay for the most amount of people, and it's the one that I'm probably going to go with.
In general, I'm not available Saturdays. I'm wide open for Sundays, though. You could give Darren a very dramatic and heroic introduction. My favorites include Doctor Who, Dresden Files, Community, Scott Pilgrim, the Marvel movies, and the Whedonverse in its near-entirety. Character details are in progress.
Now that I've double checked my schedule, it looks like my next couple Sundays are booked from 2 to 6, so it's probably going to have to be saturday. Unless you guys want to play at night.
I'd go with option three. I don't mind missing a session. As far as scheduling goes, I'm free Sundays. Saturdays are doable, but tricky.
Saturdays, I'm busy from 2 to 8-ish gmt-7 (which I believe is 4 to 10 est). I guess if the game started at noon (est) at the latest, I could make it.
EST is GMT - 4, so actually it would be 5 to 11 EST. Which works because I was planning to start the game around noon anyway. This of course begs the question of how long our sessions should be, in terms of both the earliest time that's practical and how long you guys are actually willing to play. My old Deadlands group played 7-hour sessions, so that's probably my max, and I'm willing to start as early as 9:00 AM EST, though if we start after 11:00 or 11:30 I won't need to take a lunch break.
Well, I'm PST, so I don't think I'd be too keen with starting at 9am EST.
Noon on Saturdays works brilliantly for me, as I'm not actually free on Sundays. I can go on and on during sessions, so it's up to you guys to determine the limits. And what I like is kinda' tricky, since I not too sure which of what I follow closely has common fandoms and many I'm into I don't really know if I'd like RPing despite enjoying intaking the media. Though I'm aware I have a familiarity with a large amount of series with large fandoms, I don't follow those that closely, to be honest. However, the first thing that comes to mind is -anything- with the label of Shin Megami Tensei. Seriously, it doesn't even have to be Persona [though it seems that's what most people know it for]. I don't know if anyone knows the Ar Tonelico video game series but, despite it's overuse of fanservice, had one of the most intriguing universes, imho. I like Dr. Who, but it's one of the aforementioned things that I'm not sure about roleplaying in. Final Fantasy I like, and have a general knowledge of -- assuming it's a more recent one -- and Kingdom Hearts I love, but haven't been able to keep up since they stopped making console games. I'd really like to RP comicbook-superhero related stuff [particularly Justice League and X-men] but don't know too much about them. ...also, I like Community too, Trace, but I have no idea how that'd be possible in an RP like this. I'm coming up as a blank for any more at the moment and any others that have been mentioned I just don't know much about.
I wasn't really stating things I'd like to roleplay as opposed to things that I just like.

Just got the LFG listing up! If you have any questions about the setting, please list them here! http://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/539/multiverse-crisis-reconstruction
This sounds awesome.I have never played mutants and masterminds do you know where I can find a character generator? (Update)Found one. How does the evil midnight bomber what bombs at midnight, After getting kicked out of evil sound. I'm thinking either that or blu soldier. for my character. I'm free every Weekday from 10 AM until five PM my time and then from 8:30 p.m. to 10. and all day Saturday and Sunday. Update can't get the character Generator working I'm afraid I will have to drop out :-(

Hero Lab is expensive, but it's a really good for making character sheets. Beyond that, you're probably just going to have to make it from scratch. http://www.wolflair.com/index.php?context=hero_lab
...you know, I'm not really sure how to find people's e-mails on this site, so if you want to join this game you're going to need to ask to join via the LFG page. http://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/539/multiverse-crisis-reconstruction
It's four days untill the day I scheduled for the game, and none of the people in this thread who said they would play have signed up. YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS! http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/150/505/f30fd24c56e1bcfc926883d6a51d5a00.gif
Lol, I'll get signed up in a bit. Granted, I still don't know what I want to play, but then, I'll be missing the first couple of games due to my vacation. :(
I've been neurotically fiddling with the sheet and probably won't be done until the eleventh hour. I'll see about writing up the fluff to submit today.
*Phew* Disaster aveted.
Sorry, but I'm going to have to confirm some of fears fears for you, Edrobot. I won't be able to make the game this Saturday after all. The following weeks I might be able to make, but I fear I may have accidentally overtaxed myself in commitments. I really hope that more people find interest in this as it seems very much to be well-thought out and have quite a bit of promise, even though I'm likely unable to take part.

Just hope no-one else bails out. Are you going to be able to make it next week?
Well that's no good.
Okay guys, tomorrow is the day I had planned for the game! If you haven't signed up already, please do so ASAP, even if you won't be able to make it to this week's game! Even if only just one person shows up, I'll consider it a success of some sort. I have something special in mind, so I really, really hope you guys make it.
Sorry that I haven't gotten to signing up yet; I had an unexpected road trip, but will still be home for Saturday.
Sorry that I haven't gotten to signing up yet; I had an unexpected road trip, but will still be home for Saturday. Just as long as you have //something// ready for tomorrow. If your character sheet isn't done, we can spend some time working on it.
