Would anyone actually be interested in a Religious Game

I noticed that the tag does exist, in the sights registry. As a bit of a Jesus Freak I was struck by a strong sense of curiosity on the subject. There are systems like Bridgeworlds: Soterion but I have always written those off as crazy half baked money grabs. You know like "shudders" Bible Man. But seriously would anyone realy be willing to look at this and are there any good systems or worlds that might work? "Also no well this could be, if you stretch it" sort of things. I'm more interested in knowing if anyone would actually enjoy something like this, If it where done well.

I'm more interested in knowing if anyone would actually enjoy something like this, If it where done well. I think it's doable, but because you are looking for two pretty specific things it might take some time to find the right group of people being that religious preferences are just as diverse as roleplaying preferences. You're gonna have two hurdles to overcome: Players interested in a religious game- Are you looking for non-religious people looking to play a religious themed game or players with similar religious beliefs to play a religious themed game? I'm sure if you posted a game that was "Christian Friendly" you'd have no problem finding players looking for exactly that kind game. I highly doubt you're the only self-described Jesus Freak on here. Are there any good systems that might work- I know you said "no this could be if you stretch it", but at the end of the day 99% of roleplaying games will allow a religious themed campaign just as they would an evil campaign, a performing troupe campaign, a hired guns campaign, etc etc etc. You've got Christian versions of Heavy Metal, Rap, Country Music, and everything else. It's only religious because the person writing the lyrics made it so. A GM writes the lyrics to the game, I don't think you'd have to stretch any game very far to make it religious. Be that as it may, there are a few games specifically designed with a religious flare to them. But like I said, religious preferences can be as specific as game preferences, so they can be very niche. For many though, the game doesn't have to reflect their own personal spiritual views, they just take it for what it is. One of my personal favorites is Deus Vult. It's like Assassins Creed meets James Bond meets Brotherhood of the Wolf meets World of Darkness, ala 12th century Europe. It uses the Runequest II (Legend, Runequest 6, etc) system. Here's a link and a brief description: http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpgs/legend/deus... In Deus Vult, players are members of a highly secretive order of the Church at the end of the 12th century, dedicated to fighting supernatural evils that would otherwise corrupt God's divine plan for humanity. From hunting ghouls and werewolves in the forests of the Holy Roman Empire, from tracking down diabolic cults in Rouen, to quests across the Holy Land for powerful relics that may save humanity, players will have plenty to do. They will also encounter the witch-hunters and first stirrings of the Inquisition - both hate the Order the players serve with a passion, and there is a three-way power struggle stirring within the darkest parts of the Church for which is best placed to counter the supernatural...
Not a Christian myself, but I ran a religious themed game for a group of kids (mostly because their parents wouldn't let them play anything else) with DND 3.5 and then Pathfinder. D20 systems work well for modern play and are easily adaptable.
If you do intend to do this may I suggest Dogs in the Vineyard? Its a solid indie system by Lumpley Games about the players being a group of religious peace keepers who travel from town to town in the Kingdom of Deseret. In the Kingdom there is seen to be only one true religion, The Faith (pretty much Mormonism), and all others are false so it is the player's job to make sure that The Faith stays strong within the Kingdom. The game has pretty cool rules that create a very narrative driven game and cause less "Rollplaying". I've yet to see anyone play it on here and I think it conveys the ideas of a religious country very well.
I'm interested in this, but also brand new, no experience whatsoever, to tabletops, so that would be a thing... Just browsing for my first game and this post caught my eye :)
A Christian Learning system that involves roleplaying would be DragonRaid which has been around since the 1980s. Here is a link: http://www.dragonraid.net/ There is also a link in the links section that would provide to the second edition of DragonRaid.
If I where to actually do this I already have a world lined up. I was asking about systems mostly out of curiosity. "Dogs in the Vineyard" certainly sounds like exactly what I would NOT want to do. Like I said before I was posting more out of Curiosity to see what kind of response I might get, and I have to say its been more positive then I was expecting. I am running a Science Fantesy game right know though so it would likely be a while before I started working on this.
fate could do it effortlessly, but you have to remember that "christian themed" is a meaningless term that covers: a human turned demon by lillith (or whatever) hunter type that kills the worst and ignores the merely not quite good a group of abused choirboys... angels are jealous of man & declare war on humanity etc... I'm fairly certain that none of those examples are what you have in mind, but each and every one of them fits under that umbrella
You might look into the Medieval Player's Guide. It's a d20 game set in medieval Europe, and Christianity is a BIG part of the setting.
For the system, Id go with FATE. Its the bread and butter for anyone looking to play a style of game and struggling to find a system that fits. You just make FATE fit your game (as is the whole point of FATE)
Like I have said likely not going to do this was more interested in seeing If anyone would be interested. If I where to do this I would likely use GURPS, as I love that system, and think it has great rules for that sort of thing. James made a good point about the Theme. i'd likely go with a Superhero or Supernatural esq (Less stupid post season 3 crap) Monster hunting game. Where SOME of the heroes gained power from there faith and had to follow certain rules to keep those powers. More likely a Monster of the Week Modern Horror Fantasy Game. THat gave bonuses or had certain lay styles require some sort of spiritual focus and moral requirement. So honestly it wouldn't be too different from a normal game except "Christian Morals" so it could get kind-of preachy. But hey thats if I where actually gonna do this which is highly unlikely.

As this is not a game to be starting in the next three months, I'll close the thread. If and once this game is ready to recruit, a fresh thread can be started at that time.
