WW2 Map Campaign Starting help for Newcomer

hi everyone, I'm brand new to roll20 so before i start to dig into the very basics i was wondering if there is anything to help get me off to a running start such as existing artwork for example. I wish to create a ww2 campaign map consisting of a number of towns linked by roads. The units themselves would be the standard NATO symbols or similar for Infantry, armoured, artillery etc. Can anyone let me know if anything similar exists or how best to approach this? Many thanks, Mike
Hello Mike, welcome to Roll20. If you haven't already, check out this thread on fitting images onto the map layer: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/3688/map-alignme... I have taken screenshots of Google Maps and other sources, retouched them, and then put them right into the game. You can either do you work in a paint program, or build your own maps in the virtual tabletop itself. If you have the NATO symbols already you can turn them into tokens, png files, and use them on the token layer in order to move them around. Search the web for things in the Common Creatives. Profantasy Software, the makers of Campaign Cartographer, offered a WWII set ten or so years ago when I bought it. I'm sure other people will chime in with things. Best of luck to you.

Hello Mike. There are a few things you can do. You can visit your Art Library and use the art asset search tool inside the game board itself to locate a map (the search tool is powered by google) This will allow you to drag and drop your maps (and tokens) into the mapping area and not use up your art asset quota (it is 100 megs for a free account, you get more space with the various subscription tiers). If you can't find anything you like as is online then you would probably find something you like and download it to your computer so you can use a 3rd party software (gimp and photoshop are the top two) to work with the image then upload it to your board. Good luck and hope you have some great gaming.
Guys, Thanks for all the help so far. Ive learnt quite a bit this last few days. I now have my map and counters created and have just had a couple of issues along the way that perhaps you can help with. 1. When creating text on the map the text keeps aligning itself to some particular position in relation to the map square. How do i stop this so that it will stay where i place it? 2. Ive sent an invite using the player link in the chat tab. He can see the game ok. I want to be able to assign him to certain counters but i can't see his name anywhere. How do i do this? Thanks, Mike
1. If you are using a grid, it automatically snaps, and text snaps in ways I find weird. If you press and hold the ALT key before releasing the left mouse button, it will not snap to grid. 2. Has he been in the game? If yes, then: If there is a character journal you want to give him access to, open up the journal and look at the upper right where there is an 'Edit' button. Clicking that will bring up a window that has two fields labelled "In player's Journal" and "Character Controlled & Edited by". Click in there and assign your player to it. If it is a token without a character journal assigned to it, double click on the token to bring up the edit window. That has a "Controlled by" field where if you click in it, your player's name should be available to choose. And here is where I learned all of this. Plus the videos.
Thank you Sir. Those comments sorted my issues. Ill read the links. Excellent. Mike
