Weekly 5e D&D game, Thursdays at 10:30pm EST

As the title gets across I am looking for 1 or 2 players to join a group. The group has not had a session yet so there is no jumping in required. However for all the TL:DR folks, I am looking for people that focus less on the mechanical and more on the story. You don't have to be a professional voice actor, just someone that can dive into their character. We will be using skype for the voice part. We haven't had our session zero yet (session where we discuss the game, the themes, roll stats, create characters etc.) so I can't give any info on the world or what type of theme the game is going to be. Who am I: Just a guy looking to play some D&D with folks. I have run some 5e games and have been a DM for years. The type of player I am looking for: With this game I am going to be a little more selective with my choices on who gets to join than I normally am. As this game will focus heavily on storytelling (and collaborative storytelling) I am looking for people that can bring their characters to life. For those that read the DMG and the types of players that there are, I am looking for those that fall under the Actor and Storyteller category primarily. This does not mean a person that can do cool voices (although those are always welcome) but those that can easily step into their characters much like an actor/actress steps into their role. A potential player will need a good quality mic and little to no background noise present when we play. I understand stuff can happen and we can't always guarantee silence and that is acceptable, however having music blaring or kids screaming constantly is not. The loud stuff can totally break the flow of the game or the immersion if you will. I am also looking for players that are reliable. This game is going to be a weekly (possibly bi-weekly when work demands it) and I am the type of DM that won't play without a full group so if people can't commit to the game than there is a problem. This game is going to feature many elements (such as horror, betrayal and comedy) so the atmosphere of the game will be player driven. How to apply: So if you are interested in playing in this game then simply post on this thread or send me a PM with some information on who you are and what kind of character you would want to play. For the stuff on you just a little info on how long you've been playing, experience with 5e, why you enjoy the game and anything else you feel like putting down. For the character idea be as brief or as detailed as you want. You don't have to submit a character that you want to play for this game but just in general.
This sounds really cool, albeit it a bit outside my usual comfortzone.  You do indicate that you have a group already and you're looking for people to join it so I am curious if any roles/classes/backgrounds have already been established.  It helps me (and probably others) focus our characters. About me: I've been playing tabletop RPGs for a little over three years at this point (started with D&D Next).  I mainly play of the number of hours on Roll20, I'd say 80% of it has been playing 5e.  I enjoy the camaraderie that forms when a group really hits it off and enjoy the give and take between the players and a DM that exists in a good group.  My two favorite characters that I have are a charlatan bard who just scams everyone he comes across and a straightforward fighter who dislikes subterfuge.  Depending on the tone of the campaign, I would be interested in playing a paladin (I have an idea for him to be Don Quixote-esque, riding forth into the world righting all wrongs), a pure thief rogue, or a warlock (I've not gotten to play one beyond 1st level).  The rogue has a very fleshed out backstory that I can give out, involving love, betrayal, and third-degree burns.
No one has decided on anything as we haven't had the session zero yet so the world the game will take place in hasn't been established. Although I should mention that the group seems to be leaning towards one of my already created worlds that is Gothic Horror themed.
That's cool.  I had seen the no zero session statement in your first post, but people sometimes weigh in on things ahead of time.  Thanks for getting back to me.

No problem, I just like to involve the players in as much as possible in the game. May I ask as to why it is out of your comfort zone? Feel free to pm answer :)
Sounds like a fun group. Storytelling is the best part. So a bit about me: I've been playing D&D since high school it was 3.5 and recently got back into it at 5e (I missed 4e and pathfinder cause of RL). After watching critical role I've wanted to find a group to play with again. I've DM'ed a few campaigns (5e), but I really want to be a player again. As for my RP experience I've done numerous RP's besides D&D like Vampires, and other custom made RP's on forums. I'd be free for your time slot and my availability is anytime after 4PM PST time since I work mornings. As for the kind of character. I've been wanting to bust out my High Elf Paladin again since paladins were made more useful and less hindering in 5e. I have a bit of a backstory for him already that I'm more then willing to tweak as needed to fit the story. :D. Hope to join ya in your game and if you have any questions or want to know more. You can PM me or message me on skype arma.ghost I'm really looking forward to getting into a campaign again and having those "Did that just happen moments" I still remember some of mine...like getting blasted in the face by a fireball trap...and dying...(never take 57 points of damage at level 3...never goes well) after rolling a 1 on my save. It's not always the successes you will remember but also the fails that make for amazing storyline...even if it causes your death.
What do you mean that paladins are now more useful and less hindering in 5e?

well from my experience in 3.5 if not played well they could hinder parties because of how restrictive their game play was. A.K.A the lawful good powderkeg of justice.
Ah yes, the curse of the paladin and people playing the Lawful Good aspect the same way. With the inclusion of Lawful Neutral it does allow people to play a wider berth of character concepts. However I've always held the belief that you don't have to follow the rules completely and that if it makes for a better game then they can be bent or even broken. :D

Indeed, which is why I'm eager to play as a paladin in 5e (me a lawful neutral powder keg of vengance....while gambling..on the way :P) , or another class if it fits the party better. But yes Paladin's in 3.5 were pretty cool when played under homebrew rules, and not by the book.
Even playing by the rules you could still have fun. I found that it all depended on the person playing the paladin and also on the person playing the rogue as the most common stereotypes for both (ones played 90+% of the time) did not mesh well and often lead to bickering between members.

Yep yep. Plus it's its always fun the bend the rules a bit, cause no one likes bickering out of game, in game maybe now and again to add story. the battle of moral's!!
Hi, I'm Mark and I have been playing D&D for about 4 years and have been playing 5E for about a year and have been enjoying it. I've played both player and DM and love both for role playing and world building. Currently I am not apart of any games as a player and want to get back into role playing and dice rolling. I'm a very flexible player so I can play any character that is fun or interesting. But here's some ideas I've had for a while; A wild sorcerer that acts like he knows magic but is actually a magical klutz that acts like he meant to do that. He wants to be known as the greatest magic user ever and for being the smartest, even if he isn't. An arcane cleric that was never too sure about either divinity or magic. He wants to believe in the holiness of his God but he is also tempted by the powerful magics around him. So he chose both because it was the best of both worlds. A druid that has been raised by nature and is more beast like than human but has accepted people as a part of nature that will either pass like a storm or be the new state of nature. He has felt the kindness of others and wants to return that kindness to others.
Hey, my name is Cesar (like the salad) and i have a little experience with actually playing a tabletop RPG but i have seen hours and hours of games online on shows like critical role and acquisitions inc. I have been playing Lamentations of the Fire Princess or a couple of weeks now and i definitely see my strong point being in actually role playing Thursdays work great for me and as for a type of player i have been thinking of playing as a bard as he can be a jack of all trades type, lnower of many master of none type of guy. So if you still got room i would love to play. Im on UTC-08:00 so the time works well with me.
I want to thank everyone that has applied. I will now be looking over stuff and getting in touch with those that I think will mesh the best with the players already in the group. Once again thank you for your interest.
