I have an idea in my head, but I'm still considering the best way to make it function. The character is of royal blood (a largely insignificant footnote, given the distance from her home) who is traveling to the island as an ambassador (and to seek adventure without her mother's guards hovering over her). She's been schooled in a number of subjects, including training in combat (light, finesse weapons) and magic (wizardly spells), so she's something of a jack of all trades. I've been considering the best way to accomplish this... The first option is simply to multiclass her early on, probably some form of wizard with unchained rogue. I'd rather stick to as close to a single class option as possible, though. The second is to go straight wizard from the start, but get creative with archetypes, feats, skills and traits to fill some of the nonmagical gaps. I could maybe prestige into loremaster, but this again brings up the problem of diminishing returns with multiclassing. Plus, loremaster wasn't changed significantly from its previous incarnation in 3.5, while Pathfinder has strengthened up most of the other classes. Switching from wizard to loremaster just doesn't have the benefit. A third option would be to go unchained rogue, and seeing if the Hedge Wizard archetype (from Rogue Genius) would be allowed. This would give the character a smattering of wizard magic, though would obviously pale in comparison to the wizard builds. I would also have to drop five levels of sneak attack (1, 5, 9, 13, 17) and all of the trap sense (or danger sense, actually) abilities. Similar to choice three, the fourth option would be to go bard, but using archetypes to get rid of both bardic performance and bardic spellsinging. This would again require the use of the Hedge Wizard archetype, as well as at least one other archetype of some form. Those are the ideas that I've come up with so far. If anyone can think of a more elegant way to accomplish the general idea that I'm looking for, feel free to let me know.
