Aliens Colonial Marines (Modern D20 Variant) (Round-Robin GMs)

Edited 1450681359
* Modern D20 Variant * Humans/Synthetic Characters only * 32 Point Buy Attributes (Before Adding Modifiers) * Level 1 Only (Synthetics will suffer Negative Levels to balance the game) * Sunday 2pm PST (Weekly Game) * Text Only (No Video, No Voice) Aliens Colonial Marines are not just a bunch of Bug-Hunting soldiers and synthetics. The Novels/Comic Books/Movies shed light on a much more vast experience that these Marines are actually employed. During your service as a Colonial Marine you will be tasked with dealing with Uprisings, Escort Missions, Patrols, Garrison Duty, Retrieval Duty, Revolts, Diversions, Scouting, and even Civil War. You will be playing as a soldier on board the **U.S.S. KARAIN**, a newly built Conestoga-Class vessel, one of the last to be commissioned before being replaced by the more advanced Bougainville-Class vessels. With the christening of the U.S.S. KARAIN, the Captain has selected **You** and the rest of the crew directly from bootcamp, hoping to shape you into elite soldiers by pushing you hard, and letting you experience the worst that the universe has to offer. Meanwhile the Weyland-Yutani corporation is of course researching the viable use of Bio-Weapons and Alien Technology that can be used for their purposes, or even reverse-engineered to be compatible for the battlefield. Through the many years, Wey-Yu has been executing black projects far beyond the reach of the central planets, testing new weapons, new machinery, new technology, and even more unmentionable experiments. ((And of course there will be Bug-Hunts, either Xenomorphs, Yautja, or other Extraterrestrial species that dwell on other drifting rocks, moons, planetoids that drift through the galaxy. It will be up to the GMs on a weekly basis to come up with Missions for the players to discover what is going on, and quell whatever troubles might arise, either from Diplomatic, Strategic, or Militaristic standpoint. And of course, survival at all costs. Even though Colonial Marines are Expendable.))
Hello; do you have a sourcebook for your proposed game yet?
Sign me up! I'd be hella interested. @Mark J. the sourecbook would be D20 Modern homebrew I think from what I've read.
Yes of course I do. Modern D20 Core Rule Book http://www.mediafire.com/view/z5ehyzmdonv/D20_Mode... Anders H. said: Sign me up! I'd be hella interested. @Mark J. the sourecbook would be D20 Modern homebrew I think from what I've read. It is not homebrew, it is an Open-Source creation. Or a Modern D20 Variant. Homebrewing usually refers to something not properly tested, or licensed, or published. usually just something a fan thought of and posted somewhere, or made up on the spot, without testing the mechanics. Which usually resorts to a game-breaking idea, that is almost ALWAYS banned from games, because it would be completely useless to play, since there would be no more challenge in playing the game.
Ah, the old Michael Tresca D20 book. I played in a campaign with this a long time ago. I've also done a lot of Aliens-based roleplaying via play by post forums. I was part of the old Omega Company for about ten years before the DM had to leave. Would this be a play by post style, or would live sessions be a thing?
It will be a weekly session. Because I find (PBEM/PBP) more about RP Drama, than actual action. And since the Alien Franchise is actually Action-Packed, I feel anything less than an actual hardcore, wall-to-wall, carnage would be a complete waste of time. And seeing as most of the people interested in the game are actually looking forward to Bughunting, and Boot-stomping some corporate bastards, I believe you are actively looking for some dice rolling and damage dealing in an actual adventure scenario.

Ok, just a few more questions. What times/dates would you be running? Since we're Colonial Marines and would have our gear issued to us, is there a standard kitlist that we all should receive upon character creation? Should we all begin with Personal Firearms Proficiency? It seems a bit odd that you're forced to choose between that and armor proficiency, two things that should be known to all Marines who would pass onto line infantry. Should we decide on our own ranks/MOS? (assuming that most players would be enlisted) Are we ignoring the Wealth roll?
Sundays 2pm PST You will still have to "Purchase" your gear individually using the Wealth system from MD20. This will pretty much reflect General Issued gear. And ALL the Military Occupations SHOULD give you Personal Firearms Feat. But if it doesn't, then you might be SCREWED. you CAN use any and all weapons and armor, but with a penalty if you are not proficient. So it actually does count if you select one or the other. You will all be starting as Privates, since you are Level 1. And you will gain levels and ranks depending on your performance and aptitude. Starting Wealth is Max (2d4 = 8 + Occupation Bonus)
Alright. When would you like our character sheets? How do we submit them?
Please submit your characters with http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheets And if you could, please double check everything before submitting your sheet. If it helps, try to imagine making it twice when you are double checking. Go over every step twice to make sure you have everything written down.
One last question; can we take certain inventory items from the base D20 modern book? Things like first aid kits, demolitions kits, PDAs (I'm speccing myself as a Commtech/Demolitions expert, similar to Hudson) aren't in the Aliens book, but are common sense items.
Yes, those items would be readily available to Marines in any Universe. However SOME of the items in the Aliens Game Over book, and other MD20 books will need to be approved, because this is an Early USCM storyline. Things like the Xeno-Zip, Acid-Resistant Armor, and ATAX armor don't exist, or wont be allowed in the game at all, because it doesn't fit within the game.

May I carry a shotgun alongside my primary weapon and sidearm? I can afford it, and it would mirror Hicks' sidearm in the movie. It bugs me that there isn't a shotgun on that list.
Yes shotguns are allowed. But try to think of Standard Issue Marine=type shotguns. Nothing fancy like an AA-12, or Jackhammer Shotgun. Plus you have to be able to afford the weapon legally. So keep track of ALL your purchases and your wealth subtraction.
Yes, I simply took the Mossberg from the D20 modern book and renamed it the Armat M37. I guess I COULD make a case for a semi automatic shotgun (the modern day Corps uses the M1014), but I'll stick with a pump. Almost done with my sheet. Should I post the link to the sheet here?
yes post the link here. If there are any mistakes, people will be able to read about it, so they can avoid making the same mistakes.
Fantastic. Here's my sheet .
You have made a few mistakes. You must include ALL the skills, not just your Class-Skills. but even your non-class skills. Because you never know when a GM might ask you to perform said skill. or to assist another player. Please denote where your feats are coming from (Starting, Occupation, Class, Species, Level, Bonus, etc.) You can select one more additional language (INT +3). Please remove your Traits/Flaws, unless you plan on using them from the book. Some of your Equipment is not from either of the books. Where did you get the information? And finally I do not see a breakdown of your Wealth expenditure
Ok, what equipment didn't you recognize?
Load Bearing Gear Camelback hydration System (I have one for Airsoft in real life, but I don't recall it in the books) Shotgun Shell Pouches Fuel Canister Pouch Marine IFAK Kneepads Dustgoggles Breaching Rounds LTL Beanbag Rounds And now you need to double check your skill points, because you should have 48 skill ranks. you only have 16 on your sheet now.
I'm mid edit right now. Skill points will be fixed. The IFAK is a renamed First Aid Kit. An IFAK (Infantry First Aid Kit) is the modern day term of art. The dust goggles I guess technically come with the helmet. If you play airsoft you should know exactly what these are . (as a side note, I too play airsoft. You run AEG, GBBR, or HPA? GBBR master race here; my primary is a RA Teched KWA LM4 with an RA Teched KWA MK23 sidearm) There is not a camelbak or even a canteen anywhere in the books, and that honestly bugged me to no end. I find it ridiculous that there is no portable water storage item in the books. I used the purchase DC for a standard backpack. The pouches were added mostly for flavor, since those would be part of my load bearing gear anyway. I've removed 'em since they're redundant. Breaching rounds and LTL beanbags were in the Arms Locker book, as were rules for slugs. Slugs extend the range to 90 ft, while buckshot adds an extra hit die of damage within 30 feet. LTL beanbags did slug nonlethal damage while breachers ignored a small amount of toughness on objects (IIRC up to 5). Kneepads are also redundant as they're also part of the BDU/armor setup. Removed.
(MP5A2 main rifle, MP5 Secondary, Glock c17 Sidearm, M870 Shotgun as backup. because when you play in MILSIMs, you can only carry a few low-mags, so it's better to carry more firearms to deal with the limited ammo rules XD) And Dust Goggles, would just be Goggles in the books. I believe water containers come with the IMP (Individual Marine Pack). Ahh right, I hardly use Non-Lethals, so I didn't recall the seeing them, because I never look at them, lol. But yeah, the IMP and Armor should come with ALL the additional attachments, pouches, and rigging.
(where do you usually play? I mostly do milsim with Ravenwood Securities out of PA. Callsign is "Chosen"; and as a GBBR player with real cap mags, I hear you on the ammunition restriction. When I do run AEGs, I always run the 35 rounders, and the LM4 only comes with 30 round mags). And I gotcha on all that being integrated with the armor. I've also laid out my purchase history at the bottom of my sheet. Skills fixed as well.
(California locations, lol. I go all over for my games, since my crew is mostly ex-military types. I am known as "Flanker", because I sprint around the back of the ENTIRE field, just to catch the opponents off guard while my crew rushes their front and sides.)
This is the wealth system http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/resources/systems/pennpaper/modern/smack/wealth.html
Please don't forget to invite any of your friends or family members that might be interested in participating in the game alongside you.
I'd recommend posting this to the subreddit Looking For Group (/r/lfg). Also, you can make a Roll20 campaign page and advertise for that as well.
