LFNoobs - I am a total noob. But I am looking to learn, with other noobs. I'll noob my way through GM-ing if that's what it takes!

I have been trying to find a game for about a month and a half straight but finding a Game Master that is both willing to take players that don't know anything AND having open slots AND in the right timezone AND flexible with new players (meaning simply telling them how and what to make) is one of the most difficult challenges on Roll20. So, if there is interest, I am willing to struggle through being a game master for a group of other complete noobs. Ideally you would have: - Never played a tabletop RPG and/or only played one or two sessions. - Be available Fridays after 5:30 PM EST and all day Saturdays. - Be willing to have a good attitude and a great time. I am looking for those people that are having as difficult a time as me finding a way to enjoy tabletop RPGs without having years of experience already. Ideally I would struggle us through a couple weeks of character creation, discussion, and a campaign and then pass it off to another player to try their hand at game mastering. We would all have to agree on what sort of discretionary powers the game master has. Because we would all be new, the players and game masters would eventually mess something up. We would need a way to decide what happens but if there is arguing IN ANY FORM I will maintain kick authority for the group. If this sounds like a terrible idea, then let me know. I will gladly take any sort of constructive criticism. If this sounds like something you are interested in then please reply on here or message me with the following: - What game you want to play - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 - Your favorite video game RPG - If you are willing to purchase gaming material - What you expect from a game master - What you would try to achieve as a game master - A little something about who you are Here is my "application": - What game you want to play - D&D 5E would be ideal. but I am open to anything. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 I have played about 4 games of pathfinder in my life. With other people that had never played any sort of tabletop RPG. They were also just not fun people to be around. And it was an hour commute one way to play. All in all, the people I was with made it a not-so-great experience. I have fiddled around with roll20 and have some ideas on how to make it a fun GM experience. But I am very new to the system. - Your favorite video game RPG - This is such a tough question for me. Final Fantasy VII is very near and dear to my heart. But I would have to say my current favorite is Witcher 3. - If you are willing to purchase gaming material - Most definitely.  - What you expect from a game master - A GM should be a sort of guiding hand. Not a dictator. I expect the GM to keep the game interesting and keep the payers engaged, in character, and the game balanced, while offering a good mix of combat and non-combat scenarios. The GM should be the world-builder while the players are the storytellers. - What you would try to achieve as a game master - I just want my players to have a good time. I want the players to walk away from the game saying "wow. That was really fun, and those are some cool people. I can't wait to see what happens next week." - A little something about who you are - My real passion is to be a game designer, so I hope to be a game master that brings people together for a great experience... some day. You have to start somewhere right? I am 23yr old Male with a passion for gaming, game development, and programming. I am working on a degree in Computer Science while working full time and listen to mostly electronic music (dubstep, chillstep, house, etc.) with some classical orchestra every now and then. I am outgoing but mostly stay inside.  Anything else you need to know, just ask. And may the force be with you. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Edit   1: Thanks so much for all the interest everyone! I have PM'd those that I feel could be a good fit for this sort of thing and currently am trying to organize a game with some people. Thanks a bunch for the GM's that offered to help! If I have not PM'd you, I apologize. The reason I made such a lengthy post and had you answer all those questions was so I could see who was really vested in this. I am trying to get a feel for if you really are willing to commit or are playing the numbers game. Anyone else that wants to apply feel free to do so! Just know, I am taking every bit of your response into account and I will be inspecting your profile and such to see if you will be a good fit. Hope everyone had a great new year! Lets make 2016 great! Edit 2: The time has been decided. We will meet Saturdays at 1330   0130 GMT. That would be 1730 PST, 2030 EST, and 1230 in the afternoon for you Australia folk.
- What game you want to play Eclipse Phase, but tempted to try new things - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 Alot of time spent with dark heresy and rogue trader on roll20 (played a campaign of Exalted and pathfinder too) - Your favorite video game RPG Cant decide on a single favourite, no RPG does every flavour. - If you are willing to purchase gaming material At reasonable prices. - What you expect from a game master copy past game-masters roles from rulebook of your selection? (mostly consistency in timing however online games suffer badly from player drop out) - What you would try to achieve as a game master A fun campaign for both myself and players
I wouldn't mind GM'ing a few one shots for a bunch of noobs. It would be my first time DM'ing, so it would be VERY rough the first few go rounds. One suggestion: Perhaps we should start a Skype group conversation to begin planning. My username is JustMercy1994.
@JustMercy try one of the Published adventures. Just a tip from a 2yr DM =D.

Tabletop rpg noob here. I'm definitely up for joining this kind of thing. Games I'd like to play: D&D (Never heard of any of the others, so I'm not familiar with any of the mechanics) Tabletop/Roll20 Exp: None, unless you include games like Risk and Monopoly~ ;P Favorite video game RPG: Hard to choose. I love the Metroidvania style games, but I also love playing games like FF and Dragon Age,etc. Willing to buy marketplace items: Can't. What I expect from a DM/GM: They should be having just as much fun as those that are playing the game. They should make fair decisions and try to make things serious at appropriate times and comedic if it can be thrown in from time-to-time in order to break things up a little. DM's/GM's should also try to throw a wrench into some plans that the players come up with in order to keep them on their toes and not let them have the game always go their way. What I would try to achieve as DM/GM: I suck at coming up with stories or writing anything elaborate, but I would try to make things as fun as possible (while occasionally having fun with some little tricks and easter eggs~ XD ) About me: I love trying to help others and try my best to make some friends (didn't have any friends growing up, sadly...) but if I don't make friends I hope to at least not make others hate me. I'm trying to save money to go back to college and get a Computer Science degree (not sure if it'll be in IT or something else) and am trying to learn Visual Basic as a hobby. I love hanging out with people and having fun with others, but struggle with big groups... >.< I hope to have fun here on Roll20 with the many members it has. Whomever reads this, I hope your day goes/was well and hope that you're in good health. Qwerty
Hey, it's other Brad.  I think we've talked before and we had no luck with getting a game going because of time zones and such. So if you end up having a game, me and another friend are still wanting to play if you'll have us.
- What game you want to play D&D 5E would be most ideal, though I'd be willing to try 3.5 because of how easy it is to find everything. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 The bare minimum without having played any. - Your favorite video game RPG Dragon's Dogma is very near to my heart as my most favourite RPG. - If you are willing to purchase gaming material I would be willing to purchase the Player's Handbook for 5E. I have a copy of the Monster Manual 5E just out of interest from someone who likes the art and design. - What you expect from a game master Someone willing to guide me through the creation process of a character-sheet and roll20. Personality at its grandest, I like the concept of a living world and everything trying to exist, rather that be a kobold/goblin sacrificing himself for the greater good of his pack or running like a coward. - What you would try to achieve as a game master Creative recklessness; giving the players quest-lines that seem straightforward and simple only to have it bite them in the end due to morale conflicts. On the rare occasion I'd want to mess with monster templates and learn to tweak skills or stats so a player can't auto-decide whether a fight is winnable or not. - A little something about who you are Just someone who always had a slight interest in Rollplaying and the world of fantasy. I've had friends who were big into table-RP-games but always steered away from trying any with-them (though I did play a lot of Smash Melee with them.) Recently I've been reading some writings from H.P Lovecraft and I'm a big fan of Douglas Adams Dirk Gently stories. I work full-time and I just grabbed a guidebook on C++ because I want to try and grasp coding in any-form. As for music, I've become a big-fan of Electric Swing in the past 3-years; otherwise outside of slow-depressing Country music I have no disinterests in general. Oh, and my timezone is EST (or EDT.)
Hello. I am an experienced GM who may be able to help you guys out. I will say up front now that i do not run any D&D system (they are of no interest to me) but can and will run a number of other systems that are friendly to new players. I am free Saturdays GMT time zone. I could run a short intro campaign for new players with the view to extended it if that was wanted by the players.. A bit about me, been running games as a GM now for 20+ years and have (as stated above) experience with a lot of systems. I am always willing to run games for those new to the hobby and have a relaxed attitude to teaching others game systems. I am the type of GM that lets the players lead the story in the framework of the world we play in (and i often prefer to build my own worlds, though can happily run games in many settings). I am also one those GMs that believes that the rules/system matter but should no be the be all and end all of the rpg experience, the rules should facilitate play not hinder it. If you think i can be of help, then talk to me here or via pm. I am not a time waster, i will, if there is interest, commit to running a short campaign with the view to extending it if there is interest.
new to roll 20 and returning to table top RPG/ - What game you want to play - I will try anything but have the starter set/phb for d&d 5e. been 19 years since i did tabletop rpg - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 - None, working through the tutorial. - Your favorite video game RPG hard question - FF7, DA:O and Awakening, Baldurs Gate and NwN 2 are all time classics for me though - If you are willing to purchase gaming material I am currently trying to build my own collection.  Got the 5e D&D handbook and intend on getting the DM guide next - What you expect from a game master I see the GM as a fellow player and world builder as opposed to the enemy.  I want him to enjoy the session as much as the players do. - What you would try to achieve as a game master A fun campaign for the others and myself, building up a base of connections for future games. - A little something about who you are I work full time doing office work and have always had a passion for RPG games. I got my nephew the starter D&D set just before christmas to get him off the computer and found that not only does he and i enjoy the games, we have gotten my brother involved in the games too (though i doubt he will last).  I was suprised at how much i enjoyed trying to bring characters and adventures to life and would like to get back into playing these games.
Hello there Fellow Noob who wants to wants to learn how to DM. I am also a noob who wants to learn how to DM but wants to get their feet wet on how to actually play Tabletop RPGs. Perhaps we can work together? - What game you want to play I have no real preference. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 Rules. So many nerdy rules. I've also had 2 sessions each was good and awkward at the same time. One more awkward than another. <.< - Your favorite video game RPG Undertale. I also know how to play competitively in pokemon if that helps? - If you are willing to purchase gaming material I would try and find the cheaper solution as I'm pretty broke. - What you expect from a game master Some who is creative and easy going. Yet somehow always guides the party to the right track. - What you would try to achieve as a game master I would attempt to mess with my players as much as I can get away with. But being fair, just fun loving, and easing going. - A little something about who you are There is not much to really say, I've done a lot of Role Playing in the past and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a very creative person I like to draw a lot. I have the desire to create worlds, but seeing as there are so many experienced players here, I'm pretty much discouraged to attempting to try and do something like trying to DM. I am a person with many ideas and lots of discouragement and genurally unsure about things.
I'd be willing to take on a group of n00bs in my homebrew Pathfinder world/campaign, Bradley. I don't mind helping newcomers get used to the system at all, because I remember how I didn't want to be a hindrance when I was first learning. If you're interested, shoot me a PM.

Hey, just made a post about wanting to join a group on these boards. This also sounds like it could be promising. What game you want to play D&D 4th edition is what Introduced me to tabletop RPGs and still my favorite, so If given the choice I'd play that. Otherwise I have tried a few sessions of 5th edition, Pathfinder, Legend Of The Five Rings, Unhallowed Metropolis and Mutants & Masterminds and I would also be up for those. Willing to try out any other system too if others are willing to teach.  I don't have a microphone or camera and my preference is for text-based roleplaying anyway, so at the moment I can only join text-only games.  Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 Played a full lvl 1-30 campaign in D&D 4th ed. Played a couple of sessions in the other systems mentioned above. I am completely new to Roll20 however.  Your favorite video game RPG If you asked me a few months ago, I would have told you Final Fantasy 8. Now, I can't decide whether that or Undertale is my favorite RPG (And game) of all time. I tend to enjoy JRPGs in general.  If you are willing to purchase gaming material I'm currently a broke student and until my financial situation changes, I can't say that I would be willing to spend anything. What you expect from a game master Someone who does their best to ensure their players enjoy themselves and especially makes their players choices feel important. What you would try to achieve as a game master The above. I'm a sucker for developing storylines and world building so you can be sure I'd create a richly detailed world with lots of lore and backstory. A little something about who you are 22 year old male, Currently in my first year of uni studying Computer Games Design. The career path I've set myself is to be an independent games developer and novelist. On a more fundamental level then that, my life goal is to be a creator of pieces of fiction and art that make me people think, make them feel a wide variety of emotions and hopefully inspire them.  I gravitate towards being the actor and story-teller type of player; Its very rare for me to write a character backstory less then five pages. I'm British, so my timezone is GMT. Looking forward to (hopefully) getting some games going soon.
- What game you want to play Open to pretty much anything. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 Played some D&D years ago in highschool basically a noob but understand basics - Your favorite video game RPG Hard call there goon go with Skyrm love the ability to run around and do whatever I want - If you are willing to purchase gaming material At reasonable prices. - What you expect from a game master Good campaign - What you would try to achieve as a game master never done it II am great at story building but horrible with numbers and such so I would probably try not to fail to hard lol -A little something about who you are 32yrs old on CST work in corrections have a one year old daughter trying to find something social to do that is flexible and wont bankrupt me. Also finally enjoy not being the biggest nerd in the room XD
- What game you want to play D&D 5e sounds good, but D&D 3.5 is much easier to find information on. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 Played a homebrew based on D&D 3.5 some years back. Hexagonal map for combat and such. - Your favorite video game RPG Final Fantasy VII, Undertale, and Fallout 2 are all pretty neatly tied. - If you are willing to purchase gaming material Flat-out broke, zero spending money. - What you expect from a game master I expect GMs to neither be total jerks nor pushovers. Passing an idea back and forth sometimes is one thing, but people disrupting gameplay and causing interpersonal issues in the group really don't need to be involved any longer. - What you would try to achieve as a game master I tend to spew characters out left and right, and spur of the moment content development is often a lot less stressful than spending a week on a sequence of events only for someone to break it. - A little something about who you are 23 year old college student in the USA. Recently getting into roleplaying again, though lately I've been more involved with freeform text-based roleplaying.
- What game you want to play I Guess that D&D 5e would be a good place to start as any. I'm familiar with some of the lore and how the game flows. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 I've play ed a couple different stand alone type RPG's with friends. More in the free form variety. Microscope, Fiasco, The Quiet Year. But I'm looking to get into something a little more involved and technical. D&D would scratch that itch, I think. - Your favorite video game RPG Final Fantasy 8, Grandia, Parasyte Eve (as far as classic PSX RPGs go. I think I could go on about this stuff for a while, though) - If you are willing to purchase gaming material To a degree, I suppose I am. - What you expect from a game master Somebody creative and eager, flexible and specific. I'm not exactly sure what the full range of responsibility is, but I would say that a good GM is one who is able to prepare a good plan, but pivot on a dime if somebody has a better or different idea. - What you would try to achieve as a game master I think it is a big undertaking to get involved with. I think trying to get a taste of what the other players are looking for/ are into and tailoring the story in that direction would be a good first step. Otherwise, I'd have a lot of reading to do to understand the possibilities of the system. - A little something about who you are I'm a 28 year old from Vancouver, Canada. I work in the day time until 4:30 on weekdays (7:30pm EST) I would be able to make games as long as we did them later in the evening on weekdays and in the daytime on saturdays. I really want to get into something so I'dlove for this to be it!
- What game you want to play DnD or Call of Cthulu, but open to anything really - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 This will be my first time for both - Your favorite video game RPG Mass Effect series - If you are willing to purchase gaming material Eventually, yes.  But I would like to play some before committing to buying - What you expect from a game master Patience with noobs - What you would try to achieve as a game master I'm more interested in being a player only for now - A little something about who you are I'm 29 years old living in Regina, Canada.  I get home about 4pm weekdays (5pm EST I think) and usually have pretty open Saturdays so I should be able to make most games.  I've always been interested in this, but could never get a group to try it with.  Hopefully I can get in with you guys.
Ah, I didn't notice the edit regarding times, so I've deleted my last comment. My bad! 13:30 GMT on Saturdays is perfect for me. - What game you want to play I'm open to anything. - Your experience with tabletop RPGs / Roll20 I'm 100% noob! I've never played a game myself, but I've picked up a few things from others who have made their own campaigns. Not much, though. - Your favorite video game RPG Tough question. I'd say my favourite is the Mass Effect series, and I adore the world of Shadowrun. I'm also pretty sure I've spent half my life playing Pokemon. - If you are willing to purchase gaming material Yes I would, but my budget is fairly small. - What you expect from a game master Commitment, organisation, patience, and open to new ideas. Someone who's creative and keeps the game moving. - What you would try to achieve as a game master I don't feel anywhere near ready to be a GM yet, but if I were a GM, my priority would be to keep everyone engaged. I just want to be able to bring everyone together to have a good time. And I'd want to make a world to remember, so that maybe we could come back to it at some point. I would be willing to put a lot of effort into making the game. - A little something about who you are I'm female, 19, from the UK, so I might be the youngest here. Nice to see so many programmers about - I'm an apprentice software developer. (I work full-time, so I'm only free for DnD on weekends.) I basically came to Roll20 to try and make some new friends. I enjoyed college, but never really made friends there (other than my boyfriend). So I'm super nervous about voice chat, but I want to try harder to meet new people. My main hobby is video games, but I'm interested in other things like foreign languages and music. As it says in my bio, I really want to get back into creative writing. You can find me on Steam as Operative Loren. Oh and one more thing, Steam and Mumble are my preferred methods of communication, but I know how to use Skype. I'd just have to download it again and make a new account.
