API and Character Sheet skills relevant to web dev career?

I find creating scripts very satisfying and enjoyable. How well do these skills translate into a professional environment? Most of my professional experience is in embedded coding, so I don't really know the jargon or how the industry works. Do any of you have any advice on what other skills and knowledge I should have to get my foot in the door?
