Different Chats?

Is there a way to make two different chat channels? One for In Character stuff and one for Out of Character stuff? If you are using text only, I mean
You could always use an IM like skype, but I don't believe that functionality is available in roll20 natively. Otherwise you could open a second roll20 campaign, but it would take up a large amount of the screen.

While you can't separate it out in Roll20, you can try what's commonly practiced in MMO/mIRC/IM RP: If someone is saying something out of character, enclose it in parentheses. ex. ((I need to grab a drink, BRB)) or ((Is that something my Hunter could do?)) Use say and emotes normally when you're in character.

Also. The GM can designate in the chat game-on/off pauses if there's an incoming bout of out-of-character banter that needs to happen. You really just need a good visual cue that everyone in the game agrees to use and sticks with it.

I used text for in game talk and skype for out of character chatter. If I didn't see it in text then it didn't happen.
Our group use the same approach as Metroknight but you could always use a separate IM client for one of your chat channels. I think that that there are free Jabber clients (or similar for  whatever other protocol you use). I downloaded one before I discovered Roll20. It probably wouldn't take more screen space than using Google+ Hangouts?
I find that while using google hangouts you have the perfect second chat along the side. any and all OoC stuff must be said in the hangout chat, with roll20 being kept 'clean' for archiving purposes.
But there are some of us for whom the hangout blogs down our systems to make Roll20 unusable. So we game completely in no voice no video mode. All Chat, all text, all the time. It works for us. But we would love to have the option of a second chat window.

Carrie, have you tried google hangouts without the chat? Without voice or video it may not bog down your systems.  - Gauss
