How do you roll as a PC vs as an NPC?

In the Sheet Configuration options for the Pathfinder character sheet, there's an option called "NPC rolls: Whisper to GM or broadcast publicly", which you can set to "Whisper GM" or "Public Rolls". I set it to the former and I have a sense of what it's supposed to do - if you roll for a token as an NPC, the roll should be whispered to the GM. But how do you actually activate this option? What's the difference, practically speaking, between a PC roll and an NPC roll? I ask because no matter what I do, attack rolls are public. I've put "@{PC-whisper}" in the macro. I tried rolling using the button in the character sheet. I tried rolling using an ability macro. I rolled using the button in the "NPC" tab in the character sheet. It makes no difference. And what's weird is that, as far as I can tell, this only applies to attack rolls. I try rolling skill checks, ability checks, and so on from the NPC tab, and the rolls are whispered to GM. I remember that there have been times in the past when I'm testing attack roll macros for my players and the roll is whispered when I wanted it public (and I wasn't rolling from the NPC tab then). So at the time I removed "@{PC-whisper}" from the macros and I set NPC rolls to "Public Rolls". But now I want to enable this feature for attack rolls, yet nothing works. Can someone help?
Okay, I think I get it. If "@{NPC-whisper}" is in the macro it's treated as an NPC roll, and is rolled secretly if NPC rolls are set to roll secretly. The problem is that including that in the macro means that all rolls are secret, even if it's the player who makes the roll. What I want is for the player to make rolls publicly, as normal, but for me as GM to have the option to make the same roll in secret, without editing the macro or the character sheet every time.

The sheet isn't set up to allow both a public roll from the PC side and a whispered roll from the NPC side on attacks because they share the same attributes including the macro-text used for the attack.  Normally(please do not take offense) either you use the sheet as a PC where you have the option to whisper(default is public rolls), or as an NPC where you have the option to whisper(default is whispered).  As you have found out, if you edit the attacks macro-text in either place, that is going to be the new attribute value.  At one time, NPC attacks were hard coded to be whispered but people wanted the option not to whisper, so that's when it was moved into the macro-text.  Unless we separate PC and NPC attacks(all attributes) there isn't an easy way to offer both whispered and public on the same roll. a few workarounds: make a custom quick bar macro "/w gm %{selected|repeating_weapon_$0_attack-npc-roll}" this could be used on all your players. make a macro for " /talktomyself " and use that when you want to roll for the PC as a whisper and then hit it again to disable.  It's not whispered, but it will be hidden.  I don't think rolls made while in talktomyself will show in the chat log either, so that may be an issue. use the sheet as a PC(ignore the NPC page) and toggle the config whisper when you occasionally want the attack to be whispered or use the sheet as an NPC(ignore the PC pages) and toggle whispers as needed.  You may find it's faster to just edit the macro-text... I can give you a custom sheet with a hard coded whispered NPC attack. You would need to run a custom sheet(no community updates). Sorry I couldn't give you a better/easier option. Update : you may have given me an idea Carlo... we might be able to add a "forced whisper" checkbox to NPC attacks that would add "/w gm" in the button roll which trumps any whisper options in the maco-text.  I'll test. Look for this in the beta soon(probably tomorrow).
Er, why would I be offended? You were actually very helpful with your explanation and suggestions, thank you.
