Hi, i have been a forever DM since... forever. I have ran many different systems and styles of game. What i am inspired to do now is run a sci fi game, it has been many months due to other things happening in life, like having my first son, but now i am ready and hankering to run a game. About the game, i call it a "General Setting" because there is so much Sci-fi material out there that i feel there is room for it all to fit inside of a shared universe. The ruleset i plan to use is Stars Without Number, as it is a simple and easy to learn ruleset that is also robust and able to be easily adapted to any setting. SWNs default setting is fairly reminiscent of the show "Firefly", however any Sci-fi setting could fit easily within the rules. I would use a RNG sector and use the SWN timeline as a base, but make it include more aliens, more technology, and so on. From a player perspective, if it can be pointed to in a sci-fi material then it is also achievable in the setting of this game. I cant really speak to the story, because SWN is meant to be a robust sandbox of many stories taking place at the same time. As a narrative for the players to walk into, and to put the party together, there are many "starts" i can use. The one i lean toward wanting to use is; The party begins in a combat encounter, on a Tech 4 World(future scifi world), hunting a Psychic Bio-terrorist who leads "The Way" an interstellar anti-technology cult that blames technology for "The Scream", a psychic backlash that caused a galactic Apocalypse 700 years ago. This bio-terrorist is a known Precog and Telekinetic. The party is crew to a Captain Jonathan Goode, a bounty hunter. After tracking the target to this planet you have all moved on ground and located him inside of a large warehouse. After following the captains orders and entering the warhouse to secure the target, a helicopter is heard overhead. Right as the heli is heard and the part breachs the warehouse, the target is pulled out of the building by a extraction rope, immediatly after a bomb is detonated inside of the warehouse, killing the captain and slightly injurying the party. Regrouping at the rental car to flee the scene before local police forces arrive the party drives toward the Starport to take the ship and get out. (we would just insert into the scene here with you guys doing as you want) If thats not interesting it is easy to create any number of other starts, and if you dislike that story you can just ignore the guy, he will continue doing his thing and you can go do other things. SWN is meant to build an organic star sector with a story on each planet, allowing you to do whatever you want. You need not be lead around by the nose by the BBEG.
