Why should I upgrade to plus or pro?

Not trolling. I generally want to know. If I don't gm is there any reason to? It seems like all the added benefits only apply to gm's. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you never GM, then you are correct, and MOST of the perks would only apply to a GM. However, if you're interested in the Suggestions Forum, going Pro gets you 10 votes, and those aren't just for GMs.  However, you could also go Pro and host the game for your GM on your account and open up the benefits of a Pro subscription to your group.
There is one benefit for some players, but it may still not apply to you.  There is the Character Vault.  This allows you to have character sheets that you can import across games.  This is mainly designed for the PFS crowd.  I believe that it requires a Pro level account. You could also upgrade your account to simply suport this website.

Subscription benefits are geared more for the GM but the character vault (a plus subscriber feature) is a nice feature that allows you to store characters you have already built. I know of some people that create a game just to build various characters and store them so that when they find a game, the characters are already done and ready to play. No advertisements showing is another nice feature that subscribers get to experience.

There is the benefit that you are supporting the company that provides many hours of gaming for you and your group. If you are never planning to GM you could pay some months for your GM or give him money to spend in the Marketplace. I would subscribe even if I didn't Gm to support the hobby.

I was a GM on Roll20 during 2014 and started my 13th Age campaign. I got a Pro subscription in 2015 as a present to myself. I now have a set of 3 API scripts that I use in all my games to help both me and my players. I also got into making character sheets with the Fantasy AGE sheet. So I think it was money well spent as a regular GM.  There are plenty of Pro features that I've barely touched yet, like Dynamic Lighting, which I haven't needed in 13th Age or Fantasy AGE.

How do we go about doing this if the game has already started? You would have two options open to you. The first option is the best for a campaign already active and that is just to  gift your GM his subscription. The second option is to subscribe yourself and rebuild the campaign with your campaign which means you would have to manually rebuild everything from the old campaign.
If we're starting a new campaign I would need to start the game, give GM privileges to him, and I'd need to re-enter as a player?

Correct Eric. Start the game and up him to Co-GM and let him build inside the game room and on the group's forum. You will have to handle some of the work outside the game itself like any API, setting up some of the other pages like the LFG if that is needed for listing, etc...
Okay. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the thread and especially Pat who helped me to understand how it all worked.
