I've been trying to upload gifs from my computer onto this site for, hopefully, an up and coming game. The result is that the images do not show. An icon of a split document shows. How curious. Obviously there's something more about this effort of uploading gifs or any imagery. What is it?

Minor correction: Animated Gifs don't work. Is your gif animated?  Can you provide a link to the image file you are using, perhaps on Dropbox?

As HoneyBadger has said gifs are not supported. You have to use jpg or png if you need transparency background. More information about image types can be found  here .
