D&D 4th Edition Training session/one shot - Thursday 6pm Eastern (GMT-5)

Hi all! As the title says, I am hosting a 'training wheels' session of D&D 4th edition this Thursday. This session is right now open to all. I've tried recruiting a group over at the tangled web when I was trying to use maptools, to mixed results with both. So since I know now we'll be using roll20, I figured I'd open it to people here. Backstory: I am a gamer of nearly 20 years, mostly as a DM/GM. I mostly worked with a system called MERP that is long out of print. My group has essentially scattered to the winds, so I am trying the online options. Since I can't get a group for what I know, I am learning new programs and new systems. The last time I played D&D it was in 2nd edition! So yea, I'm new to roll20, and I'm new 4th edition. I have the plot for a major campaign, but before I launch that I am doing a one shot or two as a sort or training tool to work the bugs out. If you're new to roll20 or new to 4th edition, this is a no pressure session for people to learn the systems. If you're a veteran of either, feel free to drop in and help educate the new people; your expertise is certainly appreciated! Players: Right now, I have had several people 'express interest' but none that could commit to a time, system, etc. So while I have several people 'maybe' showing, I don't have a core group I can depend on yet. Hence why I am opening the one shots (this week and next) to anyone who wishes to join. With any luck, doing these one shots will allow us to find a core group of consistent players that can work together and start the major campaign with a group that wants to be there. If that's you, please feel free to express interest! Stats: For the one shot this Thursday, those interested in joining with be a fresh level 1 adventurer. You start with the standard array/point buy stats and a 100 gold for equipment, as again is standard for those who don't know. Plot: You will be starting out in the made up city of Gran. Gran is the capitol city of a small kingdom in the mountains, known for it's many mines, and more importantly, it's large collection of ruins. You can either have been born in Gran, have moved there, or just be a traveler lured by the rumors of getting rich quick in the ruins. Whether you wish to explore the ruins or have a higher calling to 'do good' you quickly learn in the city that the place to go is the adventurer's guild. It is a bar that's home to many like yourselves, that gives out local quests and maps of the known ruins...to it's members. Getting into the guild is said to be difficult, but if you wish to prosper here, you will need to find a way to prove yourself worthy... Where and how: We will be using roll20 for virtual table top and skype to voice chat. When: The game is 'tentatively' set to begin this Thursday at 6pm eastern (GMT-5) and I at least will bee able to go until 2am. I SERIOUSLY doubt the one shot will run that long, but if you can't make 6pm eastern and want to learn, I'll try to work with you to do so. If there any questions at all, feel free to contact me via these forums, email me at bookwormbabe29@yahoo.com, or as victoria.deminico on skype. If you KNOW you will be attending, I will love to have an actual RSVP ;) As always, happy gaming! Vicky
Im not new to 4th ed but i have been unable to find a group that would fit my timetable and thursday work perfectly with me so if you'll have me im in.
Also I was wondering what your rules on alignments are if you just stick to the ones in the book or the others from past editions (ex neutral good, lawful evil)?
Hi Craig! Glad to have you. For alignment, I am allowing any alignment from either system, so long as it fits your character. Since it will be a mixed bag of people and personalities coming together, I would strongly suggest you avoid playing a character who will cause major problems; a Lawful good Paladin who feels he MUST kill anyone expressing even a little evil, or someone so evil they betray the party every session would only cause problems. I have played with those types before so I know to have fail safe plans just in case, but a cohesive group generally works better. So in short, you can be morally good or evil, but it's in the party's best interest if you play someone who can work/tolerate the other side of the coin to get a job done. Hopefully that makes sense ;)
Dont worry I wont be lawful stupid or a THAT GUY. I was leaning toward either good or chaotic good.
Hello. I'm not sure I'm the type of player you're looking for or not, but... I'm pretty brand new to role-playing like this, online or off, and have always wanted to try getting into it. I have plenty of free time (just not the right friends), and I tend to pick things up quickly when I want to. If there's a place I can read up on all the literature and prepare whatever I need to ahead of time, I'd be glad to do that. Having said that, if you don't mind me tagging along, I'd like to give it the old college try, see how it goes. If not, no worries. :)
If you have the 4th ed players guide which you can pick up at any bookstore like barns&noble. Thats all you really need to get started
Hi Vicky, I'd be interested in participating in your trial run if you need players. I've DM'd a bit of 4e on roll20, so I might be able to help somewhat. Unfortunatley, because it is so soon, I'm not able to 110% commit to that time until a bit closer (I should be ok to make it though), so if you get enough players not including me, put me at the bottom of the list.
More people! Yea! @Deja: I sent you a private message on this (so check it out!) but as craig said, what you need most is the player's handbook. If you can't find one in time, I'll try to walk you through it before the game on Thursday. Just let me know your preference, and I'll be happy to work with you. @ Canso: To be honest, I have NO IDEA how many people are going to show up thursday lol. I did a trial run last week where 8 people showed interest, and only three showed up. Of those three, I know two can't make it and the other I can't seem to reach lol. so it's kind of a grab bag to see who shows up. If everyone possible shows up (unlikely at best) we could have nine people show up, including yourself. I've only had one person RSVP for this week (from craig in this thread) so we might end up with two. I wish I had more concrete numbers for you - I really, really do - but that's the state of things. You're welcome to drop in, see what's going on, and join us any time. Hope that helps!
Still need players?
Hey Kevin! To be honest, it's very hard to tell right now. Some people 'expressed interest' once and I can't seem to get in contact again despite attempts to reach them. As I told Canso, last week we had a similar one shot where 8 people expressed interest and only three showed up. I'm keeping the door open for now and welcoming players to drop in, and hoping that I don't shoot myself in the foot with too many people showing up lol. I know it's vague, but that's what I have to work with at the moment. If I get a RSVP definite head count, I will update this thread according. Long story made short: we're accepting players and hoping it goes well. If you KNOW you will be attending, an RSVP here or to my email with where you stand knowing D&D 4th edition and roll20 would be appreciated. Bonus points if you include ideas/thoughts for what kind of character you will be playing. Hopefully that makes sense :)
Just a few hours from now. Get any more RSVP's?
The game I was going to play this afternoon seems to have gone pear-shaped, likely due do daylight savings time ending at different times in the world (who comes up with that?!?). Anyways, with no chance of that running long, I should be good to play. I have a Lvl 1 all digitised and ready to go. Edit: if you are still short some players that is.
I'd like to join if you've got room.
Hey Kevin! I sent you a PM on this, but in case you missed it: our numbers vary wildly right now, as people who expressed interest early in the week have dropped out, some i can't get in contact with, and so on. We should have room for you based on the RSVP's I've had. It's going to be a guessing game to see how many people we actually get :) If I'm counting right, we have had 5 people RSVP for tonight, with a few other maybe/possible people. I'm on now with two players. My skype is victoria.deminico if anyone needs it ;)
hey, if this is the game advertised on tangledweb i was going to join but the site was down so was being difficult to find the details, but i would still like to play
Thanks for the game, I really enjoyed the part I was able to play for.
Well, I think the training session last night went really myself. My enemies were massacred, a princess was rescued, and the PC's made off with a bounty of loot. I will be hosting one more one shot next Thursday, and then launch the main campaign in two weeks time. If anyone is interested in either the one shot or the long campaign, do email me with an RSVP at bookwormbabe29@yahoo.com with your race and class. If space becomes an issue, preference will be given to those who are new to D&D and/or roll 20, so including your experience with those is a plus. Last night's one shot was more of a standard/generic adventure group trying to 'do good' in the world. Next week's one shot will be aimed at character's a bit more cut throat; you will be experienced bounty hunters and/or mercenaries. The set up is incredibly simple: a local baron has put out word he needs men 'willing to do anything for gold' and you are answering the call. As I said, simple. Character wise, you will be level 5, and be from any class/race and alignment, even evil races/alignment for this one shot. The only thing I ask is not to be evil stupid, and derail the mission every two minutes for kicks. You will start off with 500 gold to with as you wish, and two free magic items; one as high as level 6, and the other as high as level 5. Stats can done by standard array or by the 4d6 dice rolling system found in the book, as done by the honor system. Having high stats is fine for by me, but I'm not so gullible to believe you rolled all 18's either ;) @Jessica. Hey there! Yes, this is the same game on the tangled web; I started out there thinking to use maptools, and quickly discovered I liked roll20 better, and moved over to these forums. I am keeping up with both sites for now. Last night we had a lot of people (seven!) but i don't know yet if everyone is going to want to come back for more; I'll know more as the week goes on and update this accordingly. For next week's one shot if we have more than that I will be trying to give preference to new players who need the training with 4th edition and/or roll20. Hopefully that makes sense ;) @Canso. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'll be doing more games on a Thursday night basis, so if you like what you saw last night, feel free to sign up for more Thursday night adventures ;) Again, if interested in this one shot or the long campaign in two weeks, please RSVP to my email with your character concept and experience. Happy gaming!
Are you still planning on doing the second One-Shot this Thursday? If so, I'm interested in joining. No experience with roll20 or D&D 4e; looking to get into the game and see what it's all about.
Hello ! I played some 2d edition before, but I'm new to 4th one (and to roll20) ^^ If you're still looking for players, please contact me ! Cheers !
Hey Derek and Camille! Yes, we are looking for players. We had seven(!) people show up last week, though I know at least two can't make it, and not heard from the others yet. So essentially, we're starting from the group from the ground up ;) So this goes to everyone, veterans of last week and new players: if interested in joining this week's one shot for Thursday (11/8/2012) please email me at bookwormbabe29@yahoo.com or post here with those magic words of "RSVP" if you are certainly coming. Details about your character (such as race/class) will make me happy, and you want a happy DM, yes? As a reminder. the game details are: Next week's one shot will be aimed at character's a bit more cut throat; you will be experienced bounty hunters and/or mercenaries. Having high stats is fine for by me, but I'm not so gullible to believe you rolled all 18's either ;) Thanks for reading, and happy gaming! V
Hey all! we'll be starting in about 20 minutes and could always use another player! if you're interested in tonight's one shot come onto skype and PM me at victoria.deminico to join us for some fun :)
Hey all! My apologies for being MIA. My computer died, and I've had no way of getting online. After two weeks of searching for options, I am forced to concede that I can't get my PC revived, and I can't afford a new one. I'm going with option C, borrowing from family until I can get a new computer. Unfortunately, I can't get access to a PC on Thursday nights, so I am forced to change the time of the game. It is going to be shifting from Thursday nights (eastern) to Sunday days, roughly 12 noon to 6pm. I know this will be a problem for some of you, and I apologize. But until I can get a new computer, which won't likely be for months, this is the best I can do. With the day and time change, I'm creating a new topic for the game, located here: http://community.roll20.net/discussion/3349/starting-a-dd-4th-edition-campaign-on-sundays-12-noon-to-roughly-6pm-eastern-time For those interested, go over to that topic and let me know. If you can't make the new time, I believe there are other Thursday night games, so hopefully you can find a spot with one of those. Thank you for your time, patience, and understanding. V
