Roll20 and Map Making

Just wondering if anyone has info on why we have not seen or heard about a Roll20 map maker. Numerous people use old dunjinni software.....I would love to get my hands on a map maker created by the Roll20 team! if it existed, the explosion of community content would be huge. While I did create a suggestion topic for it here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/2705716/slug%7D ......I thought someone here might have some insight on this topic. I know you can use the current interface to build a map, I have done so. What I am talking about is a legit map creator made by Roll20 for Roll20. thoughts?

You essentially already have that, only with the entire internet + the roll20 store for art assets. The community content is already pretty huge with the marketplace (seriously, it's just plain flooded with quality things). You actually have more flexibility building in-platform with Roll20 than dunjinni in my opinion. You also have numerous threads in the general forum where people post free maps using other forms of art for game use. Are you wanting some kind of procedural generation thing?
my group does use the resources you mention above....and combined with map maker forums(cartographers guild, dunjinni, etc...), I would agree that there is some great stuff out there. but a roll20 branded mapmaker seems like the most obvious money maker and missing tool. I would purchase more from the marketplace if i knew i could cleanly export a customized map and bring it into photoshop/gimp I bet we all spend a lot of time searching the perfect map for the scene we have in our head.......having a roll20 creation tool with exporting, some filters, brushes & sprays would be an awesome option to have. the interface can even have marketplace access so you can purchase while creating...all win. the creator makes his map, and roll20 gets some well deserved income.
The problem with what you are describing comes down to fair use of the assets in question. If you can export something with assets you purchased a limited license in Roll20 to use and then could export it to a PSD, you could very easily then distribute those assets to someone else without the limitations of them being locked into Roll20 for access. Essentially it is a blank check for copiers to steal content creator's works. That is literally what happened with dunjuinni, everyone in the world uses assets made on those forums online as "their original work" without citation, which is bonkers and sad. As someone who makes a lot of free assets I distribute, I can say with absolute certainty that there are people out there right now that scrubbed off my website and signature and are trying to sell my maps as their own right now, and I distribute without the Roll20 wall to protect my content because I'm not trying to make money. For people who do this for a living what you propose would probably be a warrant to lose their limited income they get for the excellent content they design. Especially when it comes to printing. People who take digital assets and print them as paper products to distribute at tabling events are extremely common and a big problem for content creators in this arena. Its very frustrating and the opposite of what encourages new designers (or old) to contribute.
EXTREMELY good point, Encartrus. Protecting the original works of artists is very important for sure. The thought of someone scrubbing your signature and capitalizing on it is truly disgusting. I guess I have not thought this through enough, I just wish there was a middle ground somewhere that can enhance the map making ability of roll20. encartrus, do you use any map making software yourself?
I make maps, but not with map making software ( https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/2658555/encs-enc... I use Adobe photoshop, sketchup, illustrator, world builder, and a bunch of other art tools to make maps more or less from scratch (though occasionally I will toss in some dunjunni assets and reference them (as with last week when I needed a rockfall and didnt have time to paint it), but generally speaking I try to make my own assets wherever possible. My stuff is all free and I make it for the game I GM, then share it on my site and here in case someone else might find them useful. I started this back in 2014 when I got sort of sick of not being able to find the exact maps I needed for my campaign and just started painting my own. Took a bit to get ok at them, but now a lot of them I'm pretty proud of.
