Gorefest Dungeon April 3rd Session Recap

The April 3 rd session was one of the epic fight sequences. With us was: Luke C playing Kritty the Swashbuckling kitty at 279 points. Naryar playing Brother Sarman the Martial Artist at 262 points. Stripe playing NPC Rashi Talonfurr at 251 points And introducing: Mark W (Whisper) as Kegorach the Elven Wizard/Archer at 250 points After a wonderful introduction by Stripe and a quick recap of the previous session thanks to Luke, we got back down to business. Starting off from where we last left the group of heroes, in the middle of a battle with the boss known as Doppel. With only a little bit of effort the first of the three was cut down under Kitty’s blade and Sarman’s strike. A hit to the chest knocked the wind out of the man in black where he lay, forcing him to attempt to draw breath and failing. It was obvious he wasn’t long for the world as he finally ended up passing on in a puff of smoke, the body disappearing. Not to be forgotten, Rashi. . . kindly welcomed a newcomer moving into the room. The Wood Elf Wizard wielding a bow before turning concentration back to the magical fire that he had conjured and moved it to burn the enemy before him as Kegorach prepared to attack. Only visible to a few, the last of the Doppel charges down towards the southern set of bookcases while the one facing the two casters attempted the best he could to throw a fragile packet of Lime Powder towards the newly arrived Brother Sarman, barely getting to dodge out of the way, keeping himself from inhaling the deadly poison and instead coming back around to attempt to take down the second opponent the same way as the first with a grapple. Without someone else to back him up, the fresh opponent instead parried the blow with a lucky shot, striking at Sarman’s arm in retaliation, crippling the martial artist arm. Rashi, attempting to prevent more harm from coming to Sarman, rushes behind the shadowy man and attempts to sweep the leg. With a lucky dodge made against the runaround attack, Rashi barely managed to pull the quarterstaff back in time to avoid hitting the good Brother. With a heroic charge, the Swashbuckling catfolk moved forwards and struck at the blurry figure. Unable to take the attacks, he lost his balance and fell back on his haunches. Down, but not yet out, the Doppel kept attention on him and slashed at the Cleric’s legs in an attempt to at least take down one of the group. Burned and struck with an arrow enchanted with Deathtouch, it only took a few more rapid strikes to be brought down like the other, disappearing as though he were smoke. The final Doppel finally comes out and exposes himself to goad the team into coming for him, waiting for the Delvers to come to him, silently having set his traps. It didn’t take too long before Kritty couldn’t take it anymore and impulsively rushed into the frey and fire, managing to survive through explosive caltrops before reaching his foe standing in the middle of Rashi’s firestorm. A shining moment of glory for the Fire Resistant Kritty was cut short when upon the Catfolk’s final attack was caught by Doppel’s empty hand and then it became Doppel’s counterattack. Moving into close combat, he struck at Kritty’s hand, the jagged edge of the katar ripping through the flesh, nearly severing it in a single slash, crippling it and forcing Kritty to relinquish the hold upon his cutlass and cry out in pain and shock. The others exercising more caution move towards the cries of their stricken comrade. Kegorach summoning an element to keep Doppel busy as they manage to get Kritty away. But not to be deterred, the Doppel had something to return. And despite Sarman’s attempt to protect his comrade, he was determined to give Kritty back his sword in the best way possible by throwing it into Kritty’s back, although with his living armor, it only added insult to injury. The group moved back, allowing time and protecting Kritty long enough for him to manhandle a potion and allow for him to heal back up, although his hand still remained useless. But not letting that deter him, he pulled his sword from his back and hold it in his off-hand. Thus began a cat and mouse game that finally came to an end the moment that Rashi empowered Kegorach’s fire elemental with Fast Fire and Kegorach cast Great Haste upon the wounded Swashbuckler. Supported by the Martial Artist’s unique battle cries to keep Doppel stunned, the Catfolk kept striking at the blurry figure, chopping and hacking as the Fire Element kept giving out a lot of burning hugs. Despite being stunned, the figure managed keep up on the defense, but eventually was overwhelmed by the constant attacks and finally fell beneath the cutlass and the support of his opponent’s team. Only a few seconds after combat ended, the only remnant being the body of the assassin and three glowing blue orbs that appeared above the bodies, and the lack thereof. CP Awards: 1 CP to all that showed up to the Session. 1 CP for defeat of Doppel 2 (Worthy) 1 CP for defeat of Doppel 3 (Worthy) 2 CP for defeat of Doppel Master (Definitely Boss) Total of 5 CP granted. Recap is up!
Something to understand folks. The Minotaur was barely a boss. His difficulty came from the confined corridors reducing weapon skill, the Berserk disadvantage, and a lucky strike on Sarman. He was at 313 or so points. Tammy was not a boss and could barely be counted as a Worthy opponent. His point count was less than the minotaur at 275 points. He was able to do the damage that he did by separating the party and then taking advantage of that fact and the darkness to kill Solaire. This guy was a Boss with a capital "B". Each of the lesser Doppels were worth about 600 points each and the Doppel Master having multiple techniques and a few other things that bring his point total up to 670. Just those 70 points invested in techniques and the throwing skill greatly increase the difficulty of the boss and nearly cost Kritty his hand. This is something to keep in mind when running your sessions with the kids Luke, more points don't always mean more difficult, especially since most of his points stemmed from the Duplication advantage and a bunch of useless skills since I built him using the Assassin template. But the real difficulty here is that like the Minotaur, these guys were using the rules for Bosses. Unlike the fodder I use, they kept going on into the negative hitpoints. The Ghouls from the first session of the Funhouse were fodder mobs which essentially died under a single hit. The rules I use are as follows. Fodder  Monsters last until the first major wound or 0HP, whichever comes first so they normally only take a single hit. Worthy Monsters last as long as I need them to, normally only lasting until -1xHP unless Berserk at which time they last until -3xHP at most. Boss Monsters are just that. They last until -5xHP but with the epic fight you put up and the circle of Kiai stunning, I could not justify keeping that last boss up past -1xHP and so he autofailed his death check. Now I know that Stripe has his own method of putting forth monsters and all, so maybe he'll be happy to illuminate how he works and what his viewpoints are with the recent encounters in this dungeon.
If that wasn't our best session yet, it's tied for it! Without a doubt, Doppel was the single best encounter of Gorefest Dungeon by far.  Wonderful job, Chris! Thanks for running it! I had a blast from start to finish and I look forward to seeing more of what you have planned.  That's some sweet loot, too! However, the biggest reward of all, I think, is that the players all learned to work together as a team. That means the *players* just leveled up and thus, the party became vastly more powerful. By the end of the session I joked that we were all taking turns in committee. Call it a rude awakening, an epiphany, a new leaf, or whatever, by the end of the session, the group was playing like never before, like a cohesive military unit, a real team . That's what makes the wolves and the lions apex predators. that's what made the Spartans gods of the battlefield. You can see it in their eyes. They are a single, terrifying force. Good job, everyone! I know I can be hard on you guys every now and then, but it's because I want you to know when I hand out complements, it's genuine. Mark —so glad you joined! Having known you since 2008, it's really great to get to see you in action again. Hope to see you regularly. Thank the gods we finally have a replacement for the legendary Ulf, and what a Wizard he is! I've never considered the concept, and it really worked very well. You're a fantastic addition to our group. Sorry, Brandon and Archie , this was one of those rare few epic sessions and I hate that you missed out on it. After all that said, if you all listen to only one thing so far make it this . . .  I call dibs on the facemask!

Wow, 5 points ? Cool ! About loot, Sarman really doesn't need anything but the bottomless pouch.
Heh, you may have to wrestle Kritty for that since both of you are concerned about weight limits.
im intrested in the blurr ring ;) adn the throwing knifes lol im sure we can come to a understanding ;P
