I am new to 5E, and I usually DM but I would love to play a character close to my heart in someone else's story. Once I picked up the 5E player guide I noticed how I could build her as a brand new character and explore what her history might be like in the D&D universe. Her name is Meredith and she grew up a princess in a very closed off magical floating city with an intense caste system. It is invisible to outsiders and floats between worlds, appearing and vanishing at random. She started as a magic user but a year ago she ran away from privilege and found her way to a new world where she could have the freedom to be what she wants. There she fell in with a group of bandits who taught her the ropes of being a rogue. She could become a reluctant hero for the right person but is mostly a mercenary at heart. She could also go evil, becoming a henchwoman for the right person. For future, should she survive early adventures, she would want to train as an assassin (which I believe is listed as evil only). Ninja preferred if that even exists in that system but that is many levels away. 1st level Sorcerer/1st level Rogue. if you want a test she could easily start in a prison setting, or just be hired as a random merc...
