Drumming Up Interest: Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Edition I'm using this post to see if there is any interest within this community for a game of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd Edition. My Background: I've primarily DMed games of Basic/Expert D&D, Basic Fantasy RPG and AD&D 1e. I'm looking to expand out of the TSR/WoTC universe into a system that is more dark and realistic. I have over 170 hours of DMing time on Roll20. Most of which is streamed live and then placed on my YouTube account: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCubqY8gBVdp3Ps5HOJPy6EQ <--- This will give you an idea as to how I run my games What I'm looking for: I'm in search of 4 players who firstly enjoy role playing, followed by exploration, followed by combat. I am more than happy to DM (or GM this game), however with my background being in other systems, I would ask that you have patience in the event that I have erred in a ruling or need to reference a given ruling. I am happy to bring on new players. When Will We Play: I would looking at playing on either a Tuesday or Thursday evening. The game would start at 9:00pm EDT. We are -4 GMT, so it would place on either Wednesday or Friday mornings at 01:00am GMT. The game would last for a maximum of two hours and play will resume in a weeks time. What You Need To Do : If you're interested, reply below and let me know your background with this game or RPGs in general. I would ask that if you join this game that you commit to playing on a weekly basis.
Hi, I'd be quite interested in a Thursday night game. The session length proposed is what I consider to be the sweet spot for an online medium. I have run WHFRP2 on several occasions, including on Roll20 and I'd be happy to help with any technical issues you may have. The one thing that makes me hesitate to commit fully is the start time. I finish work at 9:00 PM EST, which means I'd only be able to join in at about 9:30 when I get home. I realize that having a player show up a half hour late every week is a drag, so if that's a deal breaker I completely understand. That said, I'd be curious as to what approach you were thinking of in terms of character creation, by which I mean, do you prefer to have totally random character creation, in which players roll on the starting career table? Or do you prefer players pick starting careers? I personally have no preference and am open to either one, but every WHFRP group seems to have a different approach and I was curious as to yours. Alex
I'd be quite interested in a Thursday night game. Great. I have you marked down. I have run WHFRP2 on several occasions, including on Roll20 and I'd be happy to help with any technical issues you may have. Thank you. While I am fairly well versed with Roll 20 from a technical perspective, I will defer to you for any WHFR questions that pop up. The one thing that makes me hesitate to commit fully is the start time. I understand that timing may be an issue. A 9:00pm is not set in stone. If other plays are willing to start at 9:30 and go to 11:30, then I'm okay with those hours as well. We'll keep them open for now. I'd be curious as to what approach you were thinking of in terms of character creation , by which I mean, I have always been a fan of random rolls dictating what a character looks like. I do understand that not everyone thinks along my lines. We would having a Session 0 in this game which will be dedicated to character creation. In this Session 0, I would prefer to see a random approach to chargen, however if a player would prefer to pick and choose, I wouldn't rule against it so long as that player isn't trying to game the campaign.
What day is this game run on again? Is it definitively thurs night? me and the lady been trying to find a new player accessible game for some time. I'm dying to play Warhammer Fantasy. If the day of game can fit in my schedule you'll have two players extra players hehe
If the day of game can fit in my schedule you'll have two players extra players hehe This is perfect. More than happy to bring you and your lady into this. So now were up to 3 players on Thursday nights. Can you and your lady play from 9:30pm EST to 11:30pm EST? We just need one more taker.....
Yes. We can!
I would love to play but I would not be able to make Thursday night but could do Tuesday nights.
Can't do Tuesdays

We're looking for the adventurer game not an army battle.
That's what warhammer fantasy roleplay is right? More D&D than army stuff?
You know, if you would be able to accept two more players instead of one I could possibly convince my fiancee to join in on the Thursday night group.
^oooohh my lady likes that idea lol
Tony B said: I have always been a fan of random rolls dictating what a character looks like. I have absolutely no problem with random chargen. I've always enjoyed it for Warhammer in particular. The inherent unfairness of one's lot in life at the start of the game is very à propos in the Old World setting of WH. TheRavenOfDeath said: That's what warhammer fantasy roleplay is right? More D&D than army stuff? Correct. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd edition is, as the name implies, a roleplaying game. As opposed to the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop game, which is certainly a great deal of fun, but requires the following: - First take out a double mortgage on your house to purchase the miniatures. - Loathe yourself for not having the skills to paint them properly. - Lose 47 games in a row to people who know the rules and how to break them while you try to play a theme appropriate list. - Just decide that you'll enjoy the fun setting through the medium of the RPG instead. I swear I'm not bitter... : P Just out of curiosity, what's everyone's level of familiarity with the setting? It's a tremendously easy setting to grasp and while I won't speak for Tony, I think I can safely say that virtually no prior knowledge of the setting is needed to be completely immersed within a very short time. At the end of the day, it's just a darker, grimmer version of Europe at various points in history, from the dark ages to the early renaissance, with unstable magic and orcs thrown in for fun. Alex.
Personally I am very familiar with the setting, she is not familiar at all. Though I agree it is quite easy to get into.
Me and my girlfriend are brand new. i've done some tabletop games D&D, Pathfinder, AD&D 2e, 5th ed, 3.5, WoD, VTM, so not new to RP but she's new to tabletop and the system.
Hello all, I'm the newbie girlfriend Raven spoke of.
I am Rapter200 fiancee! Just wanna say Howdy Y'all.....
heya!
This is a great mechanic and superior to 3rd IMO. I ran it for a year. Sounds like you are filled up. Have fun.
Oh. So I am all for rolling up character randomly. Always preferred random rolling when available to due the stories that get created because of it.
Rapter200 said: Always preferred random rolling when available to due the stories that get created because of it. Right there with ya. I always get a kick out of figuring out how, say, a barber-surgeon, a bear tamer, a chimney sweep, and a miner end up coming together to go on adventures. It requires some buy in from the players, but it can be a whole lot of fun and sets the tone for the rest of the game. Side note, it also allows the group to detect right away if any of the players are going to be disruptive and more trouble than they're worth... Tony, I have access to most of the game line in PDF format if you need any of the books. Among the PDFs is the career compendium, which brings together all the careers from across the game line into some convenient master lists we can roll on. I also have the Imperial Ogres 14 page supplement that was published on the Black Library web site if you want to allow any players to run an ogre (not something I'm personally interested in, but it's there if anyone else might wish it). For those of you unfamiliar with the game, I will take the liberty of outlining very briefly the character creation process. You will see that's it's extremely quick and easy: - Step one: Pick a race. The playable races are: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling and, if Tony allows it (and he'd be perfectly in his rights to disallow them) Ogres. - Step two: Roll your stats. In most cases it'll be 2d10 + racial modifier (usually 15,20, or 25). These represent a percentage. So a Human character would roll 2d10+20 for their Agility stat for example, and might end up with, say, a 32. Anytime Tony calls for that character to make an Agility check, the character must roll 32 or under on a 1d100 to succeed. -Step three: Roll your starting career. Depending on the race you've selected for your character, you roll on the appropriate table. The result of the roll determines your starting career at the time your character embarks on a life of perilous adventure. These starting careers provide a small number of skills and talents (minor abilities) with which the character will begin play. As the game progresses and the character earns xp, they may choose to move into different careers, gaining skills and abilities along the way. Thus, a character that begins the game as a farmer , may become a militia(wo)man , move on to become a mercenary , graduate to being a veteran , and end their career as a champion. Of course, this assumes that the character hasn't been killed, horribly maimed, rendered insane, or reduced to a mutated monstrosity along the way. The entire character creation process, assuming a single roll on the starting careers tables, won't take longer than 10 minutes. The mechanics of the game are quite easy to grasp as well, so it's an excellent game to introduce to new players, provided everyone understands that this was designed from the get go to be an unforgiving game to characters. They get hurt. Badly. And often. But that's just part of the fun. Sit back and go along for the ride. Alex.

Well I for one would actually enjoy playing an Ogre if allowed. I always enjoyed playing Ogryn in Only War plus the Ogres were my favorite race in Table Top.

Guys, thanks for all the replies. Just to answer some questions that was brought up earlier: Just out of curiosity, what's everyone's level of familiarity with the setting? It's a tremendously easy setting to grasp and while I won't speak for Tony, I think I can safely say that virtually no prior knowledge of the setting is needed to be completely immersed within a very short time. My familiarity with the setting is ZERO. As mentioned, D&D has been primarily my game and I am very new to Warhammer. If its problematic then this may not be the game for you. I want to focus on the game at hand, the adventures and if setting mistakes are made we just correct them and move on. Tony, I have access to most of the game line in PDF format if you need any of the books. Thank you, however I purchased the PDF of the core rule book from DrivethruRPG already and will have a local store print and bind it for me. (Chargen) Pick a race. The playable races are: Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling and, if Tony allows it (and he'd be perfectly in his rights to disallow them) Ogres. For now, I would prefer to stick with the core rules. If you want to play an Ogre (Raptor200), let me know why you think its a good idea and if it makes sense and the other players are okay with it, I'll allow it. You'll learn quick that I'm not a hard lined, my way or the highway game master. I just don't want to bite off more than I can chew with a new game and setting. Here is where stand for players: Tentative for Thursday nights @ 9:30pm: Game Master - Tony (me) Nerosfiddle - Alex TheRavenOfDeath - Name not known Torvis C - Name not known Raptor200 - Name not known Roux 13 - Name not known Backups Shannon Mac If I can get confirmation from everyone that they are good to go, we can aim to start on Thursday April 21st with a Session 0. Yes its a few weeks out, but I have some busy weeks coming up. I look forward to getting started with this game.
April 24th absolutely works for me. Core book only also works for me. Keeps things nice and simple. One last thing I wanted to ask: What medium are we using for voice communication? I'd like to propose Skype simply because it's very easy to set up and use. For some reason Discord hates my computer and I could never get it to run.
Have you ever tried Google Hangouts? I've found that it works very well and it even has a Roll 20 app built into it, although I'm not sure if this is to be predominately be a theater of the mind or grid based game. I'll let you guys decide.
I've used Google Hangouts before and it's fine. The only problem I've ever had with it is that joining the hangout can sometimes be confusing. I've found the GM has to email everyone at the start of each session or a lot of time gets lost trying to get everyone in the game. Once we're all in though, it works quite well. No preference when it comes to theatre of the mind vs grids. Whichever you want works for me.
Hey Tony that is totally ok, I have no problem playing as a Human or any other core race. I do suggest allowing us use the career compendium since it is a really useful tool and expands story telling options.
names Raven btw
I have a Discord channel we can use

Hi! I've been debating with myself whether I should put up a similar post. I really want to play Warhammer FRP (2nd edition), as it's my favorite RPG! Unfortunately, I'm at GMT +1, so your time would be impossible for me. I'm glad to see that there are others interested in starting a group though. Axel
New Info: I'm starting the Roll20 group and will invite all of you shortly to it. Nerosfiddle: The only problem I've ever had with it is that joining the hangout can sometimes be confusing. I agree... everyone needs to be ready with the invitation otherwise people can be left out. We can work around that with me posting the link directly to the game itself within Roll 20. Raven: Hey Tony that is totally ok, I have no problem playing as a Human or any other core race. I do suggest allowing us use the career compendium since it is a really useful tool and expands story telling options. You're the second person who brought up the Career Compendium. I don't have it yet and the PDF is on my to buy list. I will allow for it to be used in the game and I trust that you will use the honour system when it comes to building and progressing your character. I am not able to fact check anything beyond the core rules, so please be honest with both me and the rest of the players. Raven: I have a Discord channel we can use We will be using either Google Hangouts with the built in Roll20 app or Roll 20 itself. More details will be provided closer to Session 0. Axel: I've been debating with myself whether I should put up a similar post. I'm glad to see that there are others interested in starting a group though. I have noticed that most people who want to play this game live across the pond (maybe because of GWs roots). I'm sorry that the timing hasn't worked out. Feel free to duplicate / copy my original post and change the details your own if you want to look for a group to play with.
Hey I don't mind nor does torvis if someone plays an ogre
So, are we still on target for a session 0 next week on the 21st?

Man I really excited to see some starting up a Warhammer fantasy game big fan of it, then I see the responses and cry a little as I missed my chance.
Yes we are still set for our Session 0 next week. Did you join the campaign page on roll 20?
Heck yes! I joined the day you posted you link : )
