Artsy and Crafty Encumberance

Though a "Pro" with Roll20, I am far from it, and so am looking for some guidance on what tools within Roll20 might best be suited to pull off something like the following idea: http://www.lastgaspgrimoire.com/arts-crafts-morbid... Thanks in advance for any help.

I think anything remotely close to that would need to be an API script.
Brian said: I think anything remotely close to that would need to be an API script. Nonsense! You just gotta get old-school with it! Step one: Card Decks. You're gonna build a LOT of them, one for each category of item. Then, as you go, populate the deck with additional cards as needed. For example, Swords, Shields, Necklaces, Rations, whatever. The card will describe the item, visually, just like a Pokemon card for example. As it turns out, these shouldn't be too difficult to find, as like the first example I found on Google: Step two: Inventory Management. You simply make a map-page that consists of each character, ideally large enough for all active characters on the same page. For each one, assign an area where cards can be placed, in locations suitable for their type. You might use something like this, as like the first example I found on Google: Step three: Make another page for your inventory, as the GM. The players will never visit this page, so it is safe to lay out your cards ahead of time. As you create new cards, organize them here for upcoming events, as needed. Step four: As you play, draw cards from the GM inventory page into your hand, or directly into the hands of your players. When it is appropriate, move one or more of the players to the Player inventory page, and let them assign/trade/etc the cards, as actual items, onto their character sheets. Simple, effective, relatively convenient, and requires no API. Also, I'm certain there are much better ways to do this WITH the API, of course! Also also, I'm like 90% certain that TheAaron already has a script partly written to do this. -Phnord
Thanks for both of the responses! I will have to play around with Phnord's recommendations. And in response to Brian's, I had decided I would need the help of the gods. <began chanting the mantra> "The Aaron, The Aaron, The Aaron, ..."

I would try it with Card Decks (not needing API for this method). By the way there are some phenomenal Marketplace sets for this, which I will link below, and (once purchased) you can drag-drop the Marketplace inventory cards, directly into your Roll20 game's Card Decks, and make as many card decks as you want. EXAMPLE: Regular Gear Card Deck, Weapons Card Deck, Gems Card Deck, Potions Card Deck. Deck of Cards = GM's inventory of all the items you have prepared (card faces hidden from players view). GM Deals a card = giving out a treasure item. Hand of Cards for each player = that player's Inventory. Players Trade Cards = players swapping items. Configure the Card Deck settings to allow players to Trade cards, and to allow Players to see each other's hand of cards (AKA their inventory). The way Trade works on card decks, both players have to approve and agree to move the Card (item) to the other person's hand (inventory). GM can also "Deal new cards" (AKA give an inventory or treasure item). However, in my experience there has been 1 notable limitation of using Cards for this --- it only shows the card picture not the words, description or name of the item. GM can type a name for the card (such as "This is a Sword Of Sharpness") in the card deck back-end, but the card itself when dealt or traded on the tabletop does not show the name or the words that the GM had noted; it only shows the picture of the card. If the picture is a sword, they don't know what kind of sword it is until the GM reads the back-end of the card deck interface and tells them what is pictured, or if your card picture graphic actually has words embedded on the graphic. This could be good if the Player received an unidentified sword, but it is a tricky hurdle for items like Gems where the player later forgets what the GM said about this gem for it's price, value, description, and then the GM must look back into the card-deck list to match the picture and recall which gem it was. This is similar to Phnord's Step One, except using Marketplace to make the inventory cards, and skipping his Step 2-3-4 (Pages) if you are happy to use the Hands as the Player's Inventory, and the Deck as the GM's inventory. Useful wiki for Card Deck settings and options in Roll20, https://wiki.roll20.net/Card_Decks_and_Rollable_Ta... Inventory cards already made, in the Marketplace, https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/659/inve... Set 2 (potions and gems), https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/785/inve... Search the Web and the Marketplace to supplement. Of course there are many more ways to approach this too! Such as Pages, or API script.
I found a few possibly-related API Scripts: Graphic Inventory Manager Inventory Manager Inventory Manager, Slim

Hahahahahaha. There are a couple graphical inventory API scripts already, but I've got your back on marketplace assets, as Gold linked. =D I've wanted write my own inventory system, but haven't gotten to it yet...
We use Inventory Manager slim and are very happy with it. If you need any help with populating the items I got tons of graphic tokens I can send you. It's takes a little work to pull off but is well worth it.
Another thanks to all who responded. Now to find time to play around with these ideas. -Bryan
