New to D&D *I need help!*

Hi, I'm new to D&D and Roll20 and would really appreciate if somebody could help me with making my first character! I have a basic idea of my character but I have no idea how to work character sheets, and no idea which edition of D&D I want to create my character for. (if it matters) Would appreciate any help at all, thanks!

We can help you with how the character sheets work but creating a character or actual system discussion is off-topic and will get this thread closed and moved to the archives. From the Roll20 Community Code of Conduct : The Roll20 Forums exist to discuss topics directly related to the use of the Roll20 program. Anything that more fittingly could be discussed on another website SHOULD be discussed there. Here are some good places to discuss this topic: /r/rpg /r/dnd /r/dndnext /r/ADND /r/Pathfinder_RPG To get kicked off right, I'd suggest watching our introductory video series, Introduction to Tabletop RPGs , which covers the general idea of how they are played, which game to choose and then find a group of fellow gamers. Secondly, for the Virtual TableTop itself we have a Tutorial that shows you how to use the various parts of the software. Additionally, starting your own test game to play with the controls is an excellent way of getting used to the software, and you really can't break anything I promise! Thirdly, check out the Looking For Group Tool and Looking for Group Forum daily for games that may be of interest to you. Fourth, be sure to completely fill out your User Profile . Your Bio is where you have a chance to catch a GM's eye with a well-written statement about yourself Enjoys Playing is important for two reasons: Every entry you put here is a data-point for The Orr Group Industry Report of games being played, and it lets other people looking at your profile know a bit more about you Actively Seeks Group For is where you can add yourself to the Player Directory for systems you want to play We have a wiki that grows weekly and is very much worth exploring. Feel free to ask any questions you have about Roll20 by posting in the various sub-forums on their particular topics (Don't stress about putting topics in the right sub-forums, we mods really don't mind moving topics when needed!) Happy gaming
Take a look at the "looking for games" - forum. :) There are plenty of games aimed at new players.

Be patient, there are more players for D&D than GM's.  I know I get 3 players interested for every slot I have available for a game.

Yeah I've messaged 4 GMs who all had games starting today and neither of them replied unfortunately :( You probably won't have much luck with games starting soon as people might not be on the computer all day before doing their D&D session. I suggest looking for a group about to play in a week so you and the DM have time to set up.  When I first joined a couple months ago, I wanted to do that too. Jump right into a game but it didn't work that way for me either. xP
It can help if you catch the GM's attention with something unusual. Go through the LFP posts and PM the GM. A short snippet about your character can often get their attention. "I always thought I would be a ratcatcher like my dad and his dad, but one day I was skipping school and went down by the river and found this silver ring. When I tried to sell it I was accused of stealing it. I have been on the run from the town guards since then and since everybody was saying I was a thief I decided to learn a bit more about how thieves worked." Don't do a backstory that your family was murdered by _______(fill in the blank) and you have vowed revenge, don't say you are a Drow elf with a heart of gold, and don't say you want to play a ninja, GMs have heard those way too many times. There are about 100:1 ratio of GMs to players, so you have to stand out from the 99 bozos who want to take your  place at the virtual table. Look for one shots to practice your RP, I have taken players from my one shots into my regular games several times. They can also give you a good idea of what the GM's table is like. I currently run two D&D games and one Stars Without Number game and I tend to run one shots three or four times a year. Some of my players have been running the same character for 20 years, obviously not all of that time on Roll 20...
Ahh I see. I shall try to be more patient, guess I got a little excited haha! Thanks for the advice guys!
