Questions about being a Content Creator.

So I have decided that this summer I will apply to create and sell content on Roll20. For people who actually or are planning to buy things of the marketplace, what is a good amount of tokens to put in a $5 token pack. I am going to be making quality JPG tokens and I have seen token packs with as low as 8 to as high as 50. I plan to make 12 different types of tokens, 3d rendered, Circle Tokens, 2d Full body, and portraits of PCs, 3d rendered, Circle Tokens, 2d Full body, and portraits of NPCs, and 3d rendered, Circle Tokens, 2d Full body, and portraits of Villains/Monsters. Starting out, if I am making packs with only one type of the 12 tokens I plan to make from only 1 genre what would be a good amount of tokens to include?

Commensurate with effort I'd say. I believe the nominal "average" is 24 tokens. I've released some bigger, some smaller, depending largely on how much effort I felt it took me to produce them. Dungeon Buddies were always easier and they style is kind of niche, so I wanted to make sure folks got 40-50 tokens for their generous purchase. Two small pieces of unsolicited advice - make tokens PNGs not Jpegs so it preserves transparent background, and top-down sell much better than full figure (thought of course the world has room for both!). Hope that helps and can't wait to see your stuff on the Marketplace.

Alan's advice is excellent and spot on. I'd add two recommendations. First and foremost any time you are selling look at your work from the perspective of someone purchasing rather than its creator and ask "Would I pay $5 for this?". If the answer is no, correct that. Second for smaller niche markets you may want to include more tokens to help boost your sales. Its better to sell two sets with 30 tokens than one with 20 and you get the satisfaction of knowing more people are using your art. If you're not sure how niche a market is the ORR report is a good guideline. Welcome to the Roll20 creators community! Some of the top marketplace sellers will be doing a panel at roll20 con which might be a good place to get other questions answered.

There is also a panel at Gen-con that Nolan is hosting regarding this very topic.

Hi Nicolas, Glad to hear of your interest in the Roll20 Marketplace! Alan and Gabriel's advice is pretty spot-on, so I won't add too much. Successful token packs tend to be 20-30 tokens, though successful tile and map packs tend to be much larger, with sometimes as many as 100-200 tiles. When you're ready to apply to be a Creator, feel free to email us at team@roll20.net with several individual .jpg or .png files attached, for the Roll20 Team to review.
