2 General Questions.

1. Whenever I move characters from one map to another I have to reset their lightning restrictions. What am I doing wrong? 2. What slows down your game as a GM? I am new to Gm'ing on roll20, so I am trying to streamline everything I can. Thank you!

Hi Scott: 1: Check out the linking tokens to journals wiki. In short you need to make sure your default token is set up as you want it (including lighting) before selecting it as the default as any changes made after that point won't be applied the next time you drag the token onto the VTT. 2: As with most games rules are the bits that slow my games down, I play 3.5e so they can slow it down ALOT too. My players have accepted my house rule that if in doubt we'll play on using common sense and logic and if that turns out to be wrong during downtime we'll just accept it and move on regardless of the advantage/disadvantage. Other than that it is the mechanics that can slow things down which is where the beauty of using Roll20 comes in. Macros are your friend and while they may be scary to learn at first they can take a lot of the chore out of making rolls. Again, use the wiki to learn what you can and the forums for everything else. There is a strong community of super awesome people here, that will be your greatest asset for sure.
Thank you for the reply. However I am not what I am doing wrong as I add site/lighting, hp's and ac to a PC and when they switch maps it doesn't stick. Any thoughts? Thanks again!

1) You have set the token up to what you want, hit "remove default token" on the edit screen of the character journal, and saved the completely set up token as the new default token (on the edit screen of the character journal)? By your description of the problem, that should have fixed it. But since it hasn't, its beyond my understanding. 2) ...players. Players slow down my game.
So before I have the token attached to the sheet, I have added to HP's, ac and passive_wisdom and sight to the sheet and then assigned it to the PC. Then I hit save. then I attached the token. Everything is working now that I have done it his way except for site. The character I played with is human. So I put in 30/0. I did not check the other two boxes, when I rejoin as a player I cant see anything. I made sure that I gave myself control of the toon ...but Im doing something wrong. Any ideas?
I watched a ton of youtube videos and they all show how to use dymanic lighting but now how to edit the tokens to give them the proper site based on race and or item. I am playing 5th edition. I wish it was more intuitive.

Hi Scott! Check this link for Roll20 wiki docs on Dynamic Lighting under the section about "Adding Light". (This is not answering specifically about 5th Edition but it is showing how to edit the tokens for sight). https://wiki.roll20.net/Dynamic_Lighting#Adding_Li... I hope this helps with configuring your tokens' sight.
Thanks. I've read this post but I still have not been able to figure out what I am doing wrong. I have dymanic lighting turned on and all the boxes checked but players can see from one end of the map to another even if it is outside their designated sight numbers.

If you have all the boxes checked than you probably have 'global illumination' turned on, which lights up everything as if it's daytime.
Were is that box?
Scott said: Were is that box? It's in the page settings. See the blue rectangle in the diagram in Dynamic Lighting

So I see what may be part of your problem right here. It looks like you've set the token up so it generates light in a 30' radius with the dim light starting at 0'. This means that your token will generate just dim light around it; set it to 30/30 for bright light out to 30 feet. Setting a token to generate light doesn't automatically give it sight. Have you set the token to represent the correct character? I'm assuming so since you mention setting bar values.
Thanks all! I feel silly now because I did have the global illumination box checked! Also is there a listing of what numeric values to use for things such as a: torch, campfire, candle, dark-vision by race? And what I mean is the exact numbers to put in 30/30 60/60? Thanks
There is a great resource on the Wiki: https://wiki.roll20.net/Dynamic_Lighting_Examples

Thanks Set the light emission values to whatever it is for your system, so 40/20 for a pathfinder torch. Adjust the multiplier field for races like elves that get lowlight vision to properly handle their ability to see in dim conditions. The only time you should have to specify light emission values based on a race is if that race has darkvision (or something similar), in which case it'd be 60/60 for an orc with the 'all players see light' box unchecked. EDIT: Depending on your system, there may be an online reference document. For pathfinder try d20pfsrd.com . The numbers you put in the light generation boxes are simply whatever the distance of the light is. The dim start should.be whatever the bright light range is, the total should be the bright + the increased by 1 step value.

A good base value for human sight in near darkness is 10/-10, this will give them just enough light to stumble around in the dark of night or lichen lit cave. For creatures with low-light vision use the 'multiplier' to increase their range of vision on normal light sources.
Thanks all . This really helps! We are playing 5th edition. I think the part that us still a little confusing is let's say they are a standard elf with 60" darkvision . Would I set it to 60/60? The mutltiplier is still confusing as well thanks again all!!!
From the Wiki I linked above under the 5e examples: Darkvision Characters with darkvision are able to see in dim light as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light, usually out to a radius of 60ft. To represent this we'll create a "light source" for that token, that only that token can see. What separates it from acting like a Lantern is that the All Players See Light box is not checked. For example, darkvision of 60ft would look like: Light Radius = "60" Start of Dim = "-5" All Players See Light = "Unchecked" Has Sight = "Checked"
