High number of players in LFG posts

I was looking at some of the LFG posts and was surprised by the number of players they were looking for. Some were in the 6 - 12 range, but others were like 60 - 80 players. This seemed a bit crazy to me. I know some people run larger games up to 12, bit in the high double digits, how does that even work? I ran my first game this last week with 5 players and with just 5 players the voice comms we very busy and it was sometimes hard for everyone to be heard.Do people actually run games with some many people, or are they just getting extra people in case people flake? I find it's hard to run a game with quality role playing with more than 6 players at a physical table. So, I was hesitant to try and join these larger games without what I might expect. I know there is no shortage of players, so really, me not applying for a game is no loss to anyone but me. This is no way disparaging people who like to play in large groups, just trying to understand what a game with a large group in role20 is like. Thanks!

The lfg groups you see with large numbers are more like clubs not an actual game. I belong to several. One group is dedicated to helping text based gamers find games, another one is aimed at helping GMs improve their skills, and the list goes on. Hope that solves your puzzlement.

I recently set up a large group (PUG Lobby) for arranging pickup games on short notice. The group is intended for people with challenging schedules, who have difficulty participating in regular, weekly games. We need lots of people in the group so there'll be a few ready to play at any given time. https://app.roll20.net/lfg/listing/49192/pug-lobby Still looking for more.

Some games like this on Roll20 are a pool of players, which in the 1970's was named the "West Marches" style of gaming. Any of the players in the group can show up to play, on any given session, adventure, or week. The exact party membership would change from session to session.
also if you want to run oldschool tournament settings you will need a lot more people :)

Also don't forget those living world games take lot's of players since they function around the clock or some of them do.
I for my own game have a pool of over 15 players in my game. But It's right, its hart to play a normal PnP with more then... lets say 8 people. In my game I have 9 main character players. I allowed so many because normally there are two or three missing, so a usually round is with 6 players and thats good to play. It's easy to find a time to play as well, because I set an date and if there more then two players there, I'll run this round. Not every player has to play every round. The rest of the players in my game are listener, visitor or i just ask them to play some NPCs (so they are technically not NPCs anymore, but supporting actors). So it works fine for me.

You know I've never really been fond of multiple players in the hundreds. I really think it just takes up too much time and not really that interesting. However some of these games have multiple DM's running campaigns or something every couple of days if not everyday.
