New to site, would like to get back to gaming :)

Hello, I havent played D&D forever but used to be quite active before 4th Edition came out. Started young and loved it and miss it quite a bit. Whats a good way to get back into it? Any questions or advice is greatly welcomed! Thanks and have a good one.

Welcome Derek... and welcome back to TT gaming!! First and foremost I would read  this post and heed its words as they will help you get set up and familiar with how things work here. After that I recommend just getting stuck in, apply for games (one shots are a great place to start to try and build a good group for regular play in the future), start your own game to play around in (its free and helps you really get used to using the VTT), and most of all HAVE FUN :) Be advised that some patience may be required as there are far more players than GMs and it sometimes takes a little while to get into a game but don't be disheartened because your time will come and glory shall be yours!!!
Just so i know for sure, if i DM or play D&D on roll20, do i still need to buy the hardback books for info (compendiums, guides etc) or are they included on the campaign builders, character builders and so on. Hate to get involved and then be blushing because i dont have whats needed to play :) i had all the books years ago for 1st and 2nd edition but havent bought anything as all the people I used to play with have grown up, moved or most commonly, I have lol. (sorry for the 20 questions but in the videos i see people making campaigns still using hard books with other types of platforms so just wanna be sure) Thanks :)

Never apologise for asking questions, it's my one rule to rule them all. A lot of people like to have the books handy for quick reference but depending on your chosen system the core information needed for play might be freely available on the internet. Pathfinder, D&D 3.5e and 5e for example have SRD content available that would be all you would need to play with confidence and be able to quickly look up the main mechanics. While you might miss out on some prestige classes/spells etc from splat-books and supplements you'll still be able to have a strong character and a lot of fun. Roll20 itself also has the  Compendium which is an ever growing SRD resource IN GAME! This is primarily keyed around 5e at the moment but there is also a lot of Pathfinder content in there already and plans to expand to other OGL (and maybe even homebrew) systems once the initial 5e work is complete. Books are useful and there is a certain satisfaction to the feel of the pages... but not essential ;)
absolutely, believe ill be ordering DM guide and players handbook, along with some splat books as well. Thanks for your time Ziechael :)

No problem, feel free to ask anything at all (related to the VTT and its use). For generic RPG based questions I recommend  reddit/DND or other such dedicated RPG sites :)

Derek, WoTC offers a free 5e starter pdf on their site so if you are going to learn that system, you can start with that for now.
