Got an interesting idea, either for a group or dm to try (5e)

Hello, I have an idea for a total variation on the 5e franchise that I'd like to propose. Instead of having characters that are normally from the universe in which dnd is set, why not have, up to a group, of people from the modern world? The catch, is that they all were basically transported (either by time travel, inter-dimensional travel or a combination of both) to a world with all the trappings of a dnd world, without them being able to prepare beforehand. As such, they basically only have themselves, and whatever minor possessions (if any at all) that they were carrying. The same classes/backgrounds etc. could be used, as well as the races (justified by the idea that some of the obviously all-human group might have been transformed in between worlds or something - this would be up to the players of course). I think, given the interactions and many possibilities that could taken thereof, this could be a very interesting campaign. My own idea for a character would basically be a regular guy (that plays dnd) and has a lot of nerdy interests in history/sci-fi/fantasy etc.
I've run a few like that before, except they were comic book characters. Captain America was a Human Fighter. Nightcrawler was a Tiefling Monk. Batman was a Human Monk/Rogue. Etc. very fun. Good luck!
Thanks.
A few guys beat you to  this idea by about 33 years. Haha! I was never a fan and thought it was awful, but maybe you can find some of the episodes and watch them for inspiration.
Yeah, I meant as an actual game, but that's cool I'm not the first to think of it. XD
If you want to get into a fun game that is set in the "Real World" check out The End of the World RPG. It's really fun and the charachter you play is yourself.
Thanks, more interested in the medieval setting though.
I have actually had a friend of mine run the exact concept, but using a slight variation. We built the basics of ourselves for our characters, and depending on how we interacted through a "cinematic" for our class choice, we would become more affected by the world and thus our own forms were changed by it. It was a bit of a fun concept, though it fell through after a few real life incidents. Just thought I'd put my two cents in on that.
Sounds cool.
