Theater of Mind / Grid-less gaming

I have not played D&D for many years until i recently got into a game on Roll20 and i am wondering, do most people play with grids and tokens? Does anyone play without them (TotM). this is not a rant or complaining its just that when i was young we did not play with miniatures or maps and as i do see the positives, there are also negatives. I just want to know if anyone plays without visual aid on Roll20. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Nice 2nd Edition avatar, steve! Welcome. Yes, indeed, people play Theater of the Mind style games on here. There are 1000's of games happening on here, many different game systems, in all styles of roleplaying. Roll20 has it's own built-in voice and video so you can see and hear your group, along with a text chat (that has dice roller). In that case, the map-area (called the Page in Roll20) could be used to display a photograph, or a logo for your game, or pictures of each Character's face/portrait, whatever images that you want, even if it is not a map and tokens. You can also enable the 3D dice if you want, making visual dice that roll in that main area of the screen. Alternatively the width of the Chat panel can be extended to use more of the main screen. The size of the Video area for players can be expanded to Size Large to take up more of the main screen. Or as you asked, yes, you could put nothing there, and have 'no visual aid', in that case perhaps set the background color to something pleasing. The grid itself can be enabled or disabled, and configured many different ways (square, hex, invisible, off, etc). Thanks Gold, i plan on eventually DMing and its good to know there are people that wont mind not using tokens and maps for everything. I see you are a 2e enthusiast . i dusted of my original PHB recently and after looking through it i hate to admit it but i feel 5e is better. 2e added a lot of stuff that made it confusing and also omitted all naughty words like devil and demon lol. that being said i would not mind playing a 2e game for old time sake .
I run a DnD game here, 100% Gridless.... I use maps and token and and all of it is for representative purposes.

I'm not Scott but Murder Hobo is used to reference a particular style. The group is a wandering adventures (hobo) that go about killing things (murder). Definition here .
I tend to play D&D and Pathfinder with grids and minis. Stars Without Number, All Flesh Must be Eaten, FATE Core, etc. I play without grid and no map usually. Depends on the system for me.
There are also groups like mine where sometimes we'll use a map and tokens, sometimes we'll just be looking at a view of a scene (like a photo) and talking as theater of the mind, and so on. Sometimes my maps have grids and sometimes not. I've been having fun with isometric views lately too. So, lots of possibilities.
