Looking for feedback on marketplace art

Hey everyone, I'm one of the new marketplace place artists, and wanted to show a couple of sketches to try and get feedback. I'll be starting with token sets, I'm thinking something along the lines of main story heroes and villains. I want to do male/female versions of class/race combos. I figured I'd start with the human male warrior, while very basic, I think covers a decent range of games. I'd like to do a combination of bust shot/token/playing piece, which I'm thinking will help players get in touch with their characters. So here's what I have so far for the human male warrior: I'll take all feedback, good, bad, or in between. The more input I get, the better I can make this stuff, thanks!

Hi Doc. This looks like it could be some fun. I would say to test your versions in-game, naturally test the 1st two formats as Roll20 Tokens, and test that 'best shot' on the Bio Tab of a Character in the space for the Portrait of the character. Consider if a taller vertical crop on the bust shot might fit the Portrait space better. Is that bust shot square or vertical? There isn't a specific requirement either way for that space, even horizontals can work, just a practical place to experiment and see. Happy adventuring!
I like these! Especially the figure token, which I prefer to use in my games instead of the round portrait tokens. I think the figure has a good balance of top-down perspective but still shows a lot of detail. I really like other artists' figures, especially Devin Night. But some of those figures have such extreme action poses that they take up too much space on the map. Your figure here is just right, I think.

One other "nerd note"... make your Token-stuff take up squares (i.e. based on a circle or a proper square).  I've seen a bunch of items already which get distorted like crazy by Roll20's Snap functions so you end up with blurry wide dogs, extra long goblins, etc, etc, etc. Oh, and don't make reach weapons reach outside the square, they look cool, they look like they're useful, but they rotate horridly and Roll20 doesn't seem to handle there being an 'anchor' or 'centre of rotation' that isn't 50% width by 50% height.

Oh, and if you wanted for kitsch table-top value, put flocked bases under the 'figurine tokens'... because we can all remember watered PVA glue and green flocking from our pasts.

Loving the comic book style! That's something definitely under-represented on the marketplace right now. They sort of remind be of those classic Dragon's Lair style arts. I use both tokens and mini-fig style stuff in my games. Maybe there would be a benefit to doing both; especially for an Iconic set like this? One to use in journals, and another for gameplay?
Don't be scared to do the same token in multiple colours either. I can tell you now, looking for a white-haired Celtic lass was hard as anything for a mage game I play ( wod related ) so if you feel going supernatural with the same token, do it :D you'll also give people options with each token and overall do " less " work by covering bases. You have a decent art style - so you'll find buyers quite easily. Just make sure to have everything in different outfits, if you stick to just armour the casters will feel left out.

@Gold - Totally, I will make sure everything gets used in game (probably mine:)) first. The bust shots vertical, for my tastes I liked the way that looked better on the page. @Brett E. - Thanks! I think for the most part, I will keep with this style of pose. I've seen Devin's stuff too, looks cool. @Andrew - I agree, the toke and play piece fit respectively into a perfect circle/square. I want to make sure they are play ready with little to no adjustments needed. I also get what your saying with longer weapons. As I do those, I think I will make them ride the perspective line, same as the character. It will have less action, but as you point out, will be more functional in game. @Badger - Thanks! And thanks for taking the time to talk to me before GC, way cool of you :) I agree, I didn't see a whole lot of this style on the marketplace, so hopefully I can make that my nitch (totally think these would look cool on your maps, really cool stuff BTW). You hit it on the head with the route I'm thinking of taking as well, having a package of bust/token/playing piece. I want to target the PC and main NPC group at first. @Gary "Lethan" H - I'm with you on the colors, and I'm keeping that in mind as I design. I figure if i deliver each unique piece across five color themes I should be able to cover most bases. Thanks for the compliment as well, though I do want to say this isn't finished. I will be adding more flourishes in, I just didn't see many replies with just the sketch samples. So here's a followup question: Do you think a good way to proceed would be to put out packages as follows? Set 1: Human adventurers (male) warrior/paladin mage/priest rogue/bard with color variations for each. Set 2: Human adventurers (female) Same class and color variation combos. Set 3+: Same idea as above, but with elves, then dwarves, and so on down the list of races based on popularity.

Here's a really tough  rough version of the mage, hope you like :)
I'd avoid heavily themed weapons, aligning yourself to a snake in this case limits the interest. Avoid skulls too, otherwise that perfectly normal druid becomes a default necromancer option. I see through the rough it's a foci point of the token - but I'd avoid that if I had the patience and practice to make art like this xD These are token sets, keep 'em simple along with the complicated.

@ Gary "Lethan" H - That makes sense, I'll slap something more class/alignment neutral up there. Thanks for the heads up! I've said it before and I'll say it again: This is a great community, thanks for all the help everyone!

Doc said: @ Gary "Lethan" H - That makes sense, I'll slap something more class/alignment neutral up there. Thanks for the heads up! Some suggestions... Crystal ball "A Fiddlehead" (see Fiddlehead Fern) Tangle of 'points' A 'fingers up hand' Wings (a la Caduceus of Hermes) Crow/Raven A small dragon curled a large knot (i.e. shillelagh style)
Another suggestion.  Do a pack of less common races such as Goblinoids (Goblins, Orcs, Bugbears etc) with only one or two color variations of each race.  Packs like this can be used for NPC hordes as well as by those players who go for the exotic races. Also, keep label names as short as you can.  With the new art folders, names can get shopped in the side bar making it hard to find things. Great art.  Good luck in the market.

@ Andrew - Ended up going with a crystal :) @ Feadel Morauko - I plan on it, I want to knock out some of the more popular ones first though.
