RP: Saving private Fletcher

Having been hired by Fletcher as a lawyer to make sure he wasn't killed in the upcoming trial. Fletcher had paid well and Thamior decided it at least wouldn't hurt to try. Now, Thamior was not one for fighting "fair" if he didn't have to, and besides Dux and Cognuts had actually tried to kill him when he tried to avoid beeing hogtied to a donkey again. Thamior would use his underworld contacts to try and save him, he headed to the Thieves guild to explain what he wanted and share his view. "Fletcher is on trial for assaulting a fellow party member, twice. Now the story they will tell in court is that he threw a dart at Cognuts unprovoked, and then did so again but this time targeting Ironside. To explain the first incident Cognuts had earlier been fiddling with some controls and triggered traps, harming party members including me. Then in the basement of the same building after Cognuts had triggered yet another trap causing several of us to fall into a pit with some monster absoring and dissolving its victims in it. Later in the same basement Cognuts started searching the walls again, i am certain Fletcher threw the dart to prevent him from touching anything else he should not be touching. Fletchers first disagreement with Dux came in the same basement, we found a circle with inscriptions on it and Fletcher attempted to destroy it, Dux then started disarming him. Later on the mission we came to another room, this too had a stone circle with symbols on it, Fletcher started destroying this too, then got a wierd look on his face and threw a dart at Ironside as he went to destroy the circle as well. Fletcher did not throw the dart before having told Ironside we would not want to break the seal and surely only threw it as a warning as it did not hit either. It was at this point Fletcher was hogtied and placed on a donkey until we encountered some bugs on our way out and Malagven freed him from his bonds. As Fletcher tried to flee Cognuts, who had at this point lost his hair due to not having any semblance of control over his magic fired three bolts of magical energy into Fletchers back, one burning across his face leaving him with the scar he now bears. Dux then ran up to Fletcher and punched him to the ground, yet the punch was not to subdue it was to damage. Fletcher went down and was hogtied again, and here we are." So i would ask, who would i need to talk to and how much would it cost to save Fletcher from his undeserved fate, what are my options?"

Well; it depends on how accurate a tale this is? If witnesses refute it then Cranston will send Fletcher to the Imperial Army for several years. If not, then he has a chance given a decent defence.
As with everything there are several sides to a story, but i can say with confidence that i have not lied once since i came here, Cognuts, Ironside and Dux is certain to view it diffrently im sure. So question is if my story could sow enough doubt to let him off with a fine, or a short sentence. Is there anyone i could hire to assist in this or is it better if i do it myself? A bit of both perhaps?

The Law in the Empire is not yet a very sophisticated thing. You must find witnesses willing to testify to this version of events; and if you represent him you cannot be one of those witnesses.
So it would be better if i hired someone to represent him? Be a witness myself, then if i get another person who can verify my version he is likely to be a free man immediately following the trial or not too long thereafter. The person representing him, am i right when i assume he would simply be speaking on Fletchers behalf during the trial, then if his story more or less matches mine that could allready be enough? But the more the better i imagine, as i get the feeling the deciding factor in this trial may end up beeing which story has the most people telling it. Is there anyone who knows the system well that could be hired, or bribed. To speak his case and advise in how to proceed?

Bribing a witness is a serious crime and this might be tried in a Zone of Truth; though probably not. But yes; more witnesses would be better, and the fact that Fletcher attacked FIRST is the key. After that, the other PCs could have killed him. Imperial law does not recognise any reason bar treason for using deadly force against another Imperial agent.
I was not neccessarily talking about bribing a witness, i was wondering if lawyers are widely used to represent and advise clients, and if it would be possible to hire one of these to assist me as i am woefully unfamiliar with the law process here in Haven. Let rephrase the question, when a noble gets in trouble, are you telling me there is no one who charges good money to give them the best possible chance of walking free? If this could be done i could divert my attention to Malagven and the other members of the adventuring party, i am curious what their stance is on this.

Nobles are different; but is Fletcher a noble? If he is, of course you can find him an advocate. But for a commoner; not a chance.................
Very well, seems we are on our own then. How are my chances of talking to Fletcher before the trial begins? Also would i be correct then in assuming for the sake of having as many accounts as possible it would be best if i merely served as a witness and let Fletcher represent himself?

Probably it is best if he speaks for himself unless one of his company might speak for him? Was he allied with one of the Nine Companies? And you could ask to see Fletcher; and the guild could tell you which guard is most bribeable...............
"I would assume he is allied to one of the companies, i would have to ask him when i see him. Regardless i thank you for this information" Thamior says and gets up, leaving a pouch of 10gp on the table. On his way out the door "how much in as appropriate bribe for this guard and when is he on duty?"

Thorkels, just past midnight usually; and no money! Just a flagon of Skullbuster.....................
Having talked with Fletcher the night before the trial and most of the adventuring party that was there when the actions he stands accused of. Thamior sees only one more thing that is in his power to do something about. Fletcher was unable to name anyone who could speak on his behalf so Thamior will have to find someone. He will go to the Tipsy Mermaid purchase skullbuster for anyone who wants it, stand up on a table and speak: "Greetings, i come on behalf of Fletcher, he is a man of the blue sashes and has landed in court accused of assaulting fellow party members, now he assures me and i was there, That these was merely misunderstandings! I have come looking for someone, anyone who would be able to speak to his value for the empire and as an adventurer! These drinks are on Fletcher so if anyone in this honourable gathering of warriors feels any responsibility towards Fletcher and his fate is bid you speak up! Finally, i would invite anyone present to come be present during his trial so they may support him through sheer presence!" OOC: how much would all this skullbuster cost in the end?

Bragosh of the Sashes steps forward; I'll speak for the manling. It was likely all that damn Gnome's fault. He loves to meddle with traps and the like.
