I'm pretty sure this is a bug. Auras don't size based on the token's dimensions. They only size based on the width of the token. This can cause some oddities for non-square tokens.

SquareHorizontal RectangleVertical Rectangle

Occurs with both square or circular auras.

If this gets fixed/isn't the intended behavior, it should probably also be applied to light emission as well, as it has a similar issue.

Good point. To replicate try putting a square aura on something shaped like a caterpillar, or a horse.

Similar to the Bars, which are also sized by the width of the token. Here's a Suggestion thread regarding the bars, but this didn't delve into the area of Auras per se.

I don't think it is a bug, it's an aspect of the feature, since the current Auras are offered as circular or square (not ovals and other shapes yet). There are also several forum Suggestions for different shapes, the ones I know about are asking for grid-compliant aura shapes, area of effect aura shapes, aura border making, and diamond aura shape.

Haven't actually seen a Suggestion yet to make Auras conform to the overall shape and aspect ratio of the token. I believe that would be a new suggestion if you start it.
